whomovedmychocolate - Yes, that's what I was getting at (not very clearly, sorry). Calling a child Jonty is like calling him Mike or Nick. It's an abbreviation, not a real name. At least if Jonathan was on the birth certificate he'd have the option of using his full name if he disliked Jonty.

peachygirl · 07/12/2008 18:28

We have a Lorca at swimming . A girl, after the Spanish playwright.

I'd have thought of it to be more of a boys name myself.

whomovedmychocolate · 07/12/2008 18:20

Not in this case Bocca. In this case it's just Jonty .

bamboostalks · 07/12/2008 17:39

My friend in the states called her dd Valerie Joan after the 2 grannies, I was quite surprised as she is called Silk herself which is seriously cool.

pigleto · 07/12/2008 17:34

My boss is called Anya. So it can't be a new made up name. I like it myself. Is it not scandinavian?

My dn is called Ulysses on his birth certificate. He is lovely.

My db is called Jabez, which is a family name but not one I considered for my own ds.

Part of me likes new made up names because they are creative and individual. They can be a bit silly though.

BoccaDellaNativita · 07/12/2008 17:23

Isn't Jonty a nickname/abbreviation for Jonathan?

And there are so many Freyas (which I still like as a name) around that I think we need some Thors for balance!

whomovedmychocolate · 07/12/2008 17:20

DH's friend has named their baby Jonty. Another named their little boy Thor. It's a toss up which one I laughed more at TBH. I didn't managed to choke back a giggle. I did manage to get out 'umm that's unique' in each case though

BoccaDellaNativita · 07/12/2008 17:17

kerala - Yes, that's exactly what I was trying to describe! My friend was miffed that I already knew a boy with the same name as her son. Well, that's not my problem ...

Piffle · 07/12/2008 17:16

anya is a nice uncommon but pretty name
I knows lot of eastern Europeans called anya( arn ya)

SummerC · 07/12/2008 17:08

My dd's name is Anya (Anya, not Ahn-ya). What's wrong with Anya? I always thought it was a relatively common name. sigh...have I set her up for a lifetime of teasing??

shubiedoo · 07/12/2008 15:45

I read once about a family named Tanner with a son Hunter. Hunter Tanner, aack! I suppose he could hunt animals and then tan their flesh to make coats...

bruhaha · 07/12/2008 14:53

Gorionine · 07/12/2008 14:36

Sorry Doodle, just posted the last one a bit fast. It would not be because you had something to do with it by any chance? Never in my life have I seen someone better nicknamed than her, especially as the "nicknaming" happened just hours after she was born.

Gorionine · 07/12/2008 14:18

Thanks Doodle.

kerala · 07/12/2008 13:22

Fox for a little boy. And the mum was lovely really nice but had to rearrange my face into a "how lovely".

Algernon - surprising but actually grown on me.

The other thing that makes me laugh inwardly is people that announce a really really popular name (Jack/Grace/Tom) as if they have thought of it themselves and get cross on hearing of other children with the same name. Well dont pick the name that has been number 1 on the most popular name list for the last 10 years if that bothers you!

UnquietDad · 07/12/2008 13:10

It's time, once again, for this

The only antidote to name-related fuckwittery. Enjoy!

(Warning - will have you snorting with uncontrollable laughter.)

Umlellala · 07/12/2008 12:43

Ha, our son is called Skyler (Sky) . We get a fair few but we love it. AndI'm still convinced it will be popular one day...

Piffle · 07/12/2008 12:36

no but think slebz ashlee Simpson and pete wentz could hear an entire world guffaw in unison when introduced to BRONX MOWGLI...

Ozziegirly · 07/12/2008 12:36

My hairdresser's boy is called Rocco Blaze. My mum was but I quite like it in a "not for me in a million years but if you are determined that your child should be a film star, then ok"

OrmIrian · 07/12/2008 12:35

Yes. Fraid so.

Woman at work. Went to see her at her desk and saw a photo of 2 beautiful blond angels.

"Oh they're lovely children. What are they called?"

"Trevor and Trinity" she replied without a trace of irony.

Doodle2U · 07/12/2008 12:34

Gorione - you're getting your children mixed up! DS3 !!!

Your children all have beautiful names but my fave is your youngest DD's nick-name
