Ooh I love Camille!

LiffeyanFiaRua · 23/12/2008 18:42

I like it, but I wouldn't say it was perfect becaues of the Audrey tatou film there are a lot of 6 and 7 yr old Amelies out there.

It's also very like Amelia and Emily, so it doesn't stand out, it blends in. This is not BAD however.

IF you love Millie (and it is very pretty) what do you think of Camille or Mildred or Millicent? Just a few other names that could have the same nn.

MrsMattie · 23/12/2008 18:23

Amelie nice, Milly horrid

findtheriver · 23/12/2008 18:21

Personally I prefer Amelia, unless you're French. Amelia sounds more classy and suitable for older girl/adult.

Don't like Milly - too many of them around, but tbh it would probably end up being abbreviated anyway!

BucketsofReindeerPoo · 23/12/2008 17:57

That's true. Some Scottish accents would pronounce Amelia more like Amillia so the nn Millie would be more natural. My sis is a grown up Amelia but we've only ever called her Meely or Meels for short (down South that is).

ByTheSea · 23/12/2008 17:20

Very pretty.

fluffles · 23/12/2008 17:18

I guess it depends on accent then. They sound quite different when i say them.

V. important i think when choosing names to think about the prevailing local accent as well as family accents. Some names sound lovely in some accents and horrible in others.

babylovessanta · 23/12/2008 17:10

Sound very alike though.

fluffles · 23/12/2008 17:07

I love Amelie (and Milly) but Amelia is too english home counties for us

BTW, i have nothing against the english home counties however just as gaelic names only really work in scotland or ireland there are some names that just seem out of place up here.

P.s. i noticed the Emily posts above - am i the only person who pronouonces Amelie and Am-i-lee? Nothing like Emily which i'd pronounce Em-i-lay.

babylovessanta · 23/12/2008 17:00

I like it BUT I think that an Ameilie will be forever saying no it is not Emily.

Jojay · 23/12/2008 16:06

I prefer Emily, or Amelia. Amelie a bit too 'of the moment' for me.

BucketsofReindeerPoo · 23/12/2008 15:59

Both very common where I live!
Would go for whichever you feel more comfy with - Latin or French.

ceeceeanne · 23/12/2008 15:57

Millicent is nice to shorten to milly

Lemontart · 01/12/2008 12:49

I like Amelie and was tempted with DD2 (DH not a fan so got crossed off the list).
My mum did a "ooooh noooo, she will get smelly melly" which also put me off rather!
It is quite popular round here now, but not to the point of being "common" though.

If you like it and it works with your surname, go for it. I know you have asked for opinions and got it, but ultimately if you really like it, go for it.

RachieB · 01/12/2008 12:46

I much prefer Amelie to Amelia

x

Kotek · 01/12/2008 12:41

Hi, I like the name Amelie and it does have various nice shortenings - Milly, Ellie, Amy etc.

I don't think you have to be French to use the name if you like it, as there are so many names in common use now in the UK which several decades ago were considered to be 'foreign'. If you like it, just go for it!

It seems to increasing in the rankings each year in the UK charts of baby names and also I have noticed in Australia.

As for the mis-pronounciation point, funnily enough, just yesterday I was speaking to a 35 yr old friend called Emily who said she increasingly gets asked if her names is spelt with an 'A' or 'E' so perhaps Amelie is getting more common now!?

I would be interested to hear from other mums of Amelie's as to whether the mispronounciation/ wrong spelling is a big problem or not?

Best of luck in getting pregnant mummyloveslucy!

jempurd · 01/12/2008 11:34

Hi, I just stumbled upon this board and thought I'd share with you!
I have a 10 month old girl named Amelia, we loved the name from the beginning of the pregnancy and we get lots of compliments on it.

We call her Milly too, but stick with Amelia most of the time. I guess there's no point having a pretty name if you don't use it?
(I know someone called Amelie, she has lot's of problems with people getting the pronounciation and spelling wrong......)

Her middle name is Ava which usually draws more opinions accross the board, I think that's a love it or hate it name!
Best of luck with the baby, another Amelia in the world will make it a much prettier place! lol

mummyloveslucy · 01/12/2008 10:17

Thanks LynetteScavo. I like to see myself as nearly pregnant.

Seeker- I like the bit about the kick ass lawyer, you are quite right.
Amelia sounds more of a proper name, if you know what I mean. It can be shortened to something sweet for when she's little too.

Oh, sorry, missed your last post.

Sending you lots of fertile vibes!

LynetteScavo · 30/11/2008 21:55

Amelie is lovely.

Are you pregnant yet?

seeker · 30/11/2008 21:55

Amelia is lovely. Amelie is a bit trying too hard to me. And it's hard to imagine a kick-ass lawyer called Amelie (one of my name tests!)

lilolilmanchester · 30/11/2008 21:53

lovely. Nothing not to like about either long or short verision, go for it, and ignore anyone who says otherwise!

lovelydear · 30/11/2008 21:49

Merle is lovely, and similar but different?

Miyazaki · 30/11/2008 21:48

it's lovely.

weepootle · 30/11/2008 21:47

Agree with funnypeculiar about your names being too similar, Amelia definitely sounds better with Lucy.
