My friend is considering naming her child this, after her mother. She knows it is quite dated however, and wanted to know your thoughts? Personally, I like it a lot.

I think it's quite blinkered to dislike it JUST because it was typical in the fifties.

It's not an exceptionally ugly sound, it isn't so different from Emily.

Once upon a time Emilys were all great aunts and step mothers.

I mean, dislike it if you want to ! but if you knew even ONE little girl called Valerie, I bet it would start to grow on you, or you'd dislike it less.

Valetta is a town in Malta isn't it? I suppose being named after a town never did Miss Hilton any harm....

rubyredslippers · 25/11/2008 18:05

Love Valentina and Valletta...if thats a real name....? not keen on valerie tho.

LuLuBai · 25/11/2008 17:35

I think it is OK for a girl. My husband likes Valeri for a boy (it is firmly vetoed obviously!)

nooka · 25/11/2008 17:22

I think it fits right in with that register. All those "ie"s. But clearly she might take some stick for it. It is nice to be named for family though - my dd is named after two grandmothers (great-grandmothers to her) and she is proud of that connection. Is the mother still alive? I'd not use the name of a live relative for a first name personally.

Majeika · 25/11/2008 14:25

horrible

OK as a middle name if you really like it

just thinking of the register

Chloe
Emily
Keira
Valerie
Katie

ooh no - not keen at all

kitsmummy · 25/11/2008 14:23

Obviously, it's gross

unmadebed · 25/11/2008 14:15

My Mum is called Valerie- she hates it, we all hate it. Real 1950's name.

Olihan · 24/11/2008 22:56

I picture a 50 - 60 year old woman.

Could she use it as a middle name?

RachieB · 24/11/2008 22:55

dont like it

BlackEyedDog · 24/11/2008 21:54

I'm fascinated that you might pick this name. It is what every housewife in the 1960's was called.

that said, I rather like it.

unknownrebelbang · 24/11/2008 21:48

My stepmother is a Valerie.

nuff said.

BoccaDellaVerita · 24/11/2008 21:34

Valerie was our name for dd before she was born because we knew she would be a singleton.

It's fine as a name but Lally as a nickname is vile. Is it only in my family that it's a euphemism for diarrhoea?

SoMuchToBits · 24/11/2008 21:29

In my family tree I have found a Valeria, which is a little bit different and could be shortened to "Ria" rather than "Val"

stretchmarkqueen · 24/11/2008 21:17

I think it's a lovely name, but please. if she has ginger hair don't call her Valerie..!

wheresthehamster · 24/11/2008 21:13

Yep, it's old-fashioned, some girls at my school were Valeries. But they called themselves Valli, which I think is ok. Agree, hate Val

singingtree · 24/11/2008 21:05

No. It's very old fashioned, and not in a good way

Hulababy · 24/11/2008 21:00

I don't like it sorry.

jemimap · 24/11/2008 20:20

My middle name is Valerie and I have absolutely HATED it throughout the whole of my life!!!! (I'm 35 now) I know this seems a strong response but I feel strongly against it.. I was named after my mum (who died in childbirth) which of course should be a sweet and lovely thing to do but I was teased soooo much about this name throughout my school years,so much so, that as soon as possible, at 20 years of age I ditched the name completely !! hoorahh. I am now officially 'valerie' free.. So my opinion, in case you are left wondering :-), is nooooooooooooo..

Sesi · 24/11/2008 19:39

Can't say I like it - it has a very middle aged association to me. Though in a way it is similar to the Coralie, Amelie, Rosalie group of names which are very in at the moment.

Valentina is nice however.

Yes, it will seem an odd choice for about five years, then in about 2013 it'll seem like a high fashion choice iyswim, then a normal choice by 2018 (approx!!)

nooka · 24/11/2008 18:16

I think that she will be relatively unusual , but expect names from that generation to be coming around again in a while (it's more usual to use names from the generation before, which is why we have lots of "old lady" names right now).
