Alfred- alfie or freddie

Our prospective boy's name is Alfred.

Would you see how it goes or say to people to be known as Freddie or Alfie?

Do you prefer Alfie or Freddie? I know both are quite popular...but we like them.

Our other boy's names are Albert and Thedore. DH is kind of stuck on Alfred though so the others are not real contenders.

DS1 is Hugh.

Ha ha, on here looking at names for DC3 and see my old post for DS2 back on here. That little bump is now Alfred. He mainly gets called Alfred in full, never Alfie to us but some of the grandparents like to call him Alfie. If we shorten it it is to Fred, not Freddie, just Fred.

He really suits it, red hair, freckles, big brown eyes. Kids pronounce it as Alfwid I have noticed which always makes me chuckle.

We also have a very good friend who has an Albert, shortened to Bertie.

Oh yeah - very old - just wanted to defend 'Alfred!' lol

mayanna123 · 14/08/2011 22:10

Oh, just noticed how old this thread is Blush

mayanna123 · 14/08/2011 22:10

But Alf/Alfie rolls off the tongue much easier than Alfred for some reason, so I can see why kids shorten Alfred to Alfie - it is a natural nickname imo.

Kytti · 14/08/2011 22:07

My son is called Alfred. He is four. When I meet people they say, "Oh, is Alfie... whatever question?" and then there is that awkward moment when I say "ALFRED is..." He is an Alfred. And as his older sister says, "people are always trying to call Alfred Alfie, but that's a different name, isn't it?"

I know he might call himself something different when he's older, but he's my Alfred, and always will be. :)

BabyTalk13 · 07/12/2008 01:29

Love them both.
They are both cute names and love names that can be made short when younger then more grown up when you grow up!! lol
I know more Alfies than I do Freddies.
(Ive always loved Theo)

rachels103 · 06/12/2008 20:08

Alfie or Alf I think, rather than Freddie. I like Albert too though...Bertie!

kalo12 · 06/12/2008 20:04

alfredo

Cies · 06/12/2008 19:58

I'd go with Alfie.

socialpariah · 06/12/2008 19:39

I have an Alfie who is Alf for short and Alfred when I am cross with him.........!

GrapeJelly · 06/12/2008 19:34

Both are nice but slightly prefer Alfie- it sounds cheeky and cute.

Helium · 05/12/2008 20:35

Another vote for Freedie - love Alfred and Albert as names. (Al..?)

nappyaddict · 05/12/2008 14:01

spotty - alf and fred are much less common than alfie or freddie so maybe go for those instead?

belgo · 05/12/2008 14:00

or even Eddie

nappyaddict · 05/12/2008 13:59

Definitely Freddie. Alfie is much more common.

tiredemma · 03/12/2008 17:48

I have an Alfie.

If I was ever mad enough to pro-create I and had aother boy I would consider Freddie

spotty26 · 03/12/2008 17:46

This place is funny, even though in my opening post I said we love Alfred but which shortening you get the response "don't like either". Hey ho, life's rich tapestry and all.

Re, giving him the long name, I personally like the fact that if we call him Alfred, he has loads of options, regardless of what shortening he ends up getting called.

I also like Alfred as a name but know that we will inevitably want to shorten it so am thinking ahead.

Al, Alf, Alfie, Freddie are all options but I was just wondering about popularity etc. I know a few years ago due to Alfie Moon in Eastenders there was a spike in popularity. I am not a massive fan of having a really over popular name so the fact there might be 3 Freddie's in a class might make me lean to Alfie.

Thanks for all the responses.

alfie

AtheneNoctua · 01/12/2008 19:17

I meant "Freddies"

AtheneNoctua · 01/12/2008 19:16

I personally prefer Alfie.

But....

In DS' nursery class of 26 childred there are 3 Freddie's. Name of the year I guess.

colnelcustard · 01/12/2008 18:42

My son is Alfred shortened to Alfie.

Though lately, we have started shortening it to Alf. He quite likes it!

wombleprincess · 01/12/2008 14:39

if you are going to give them a short name (even though neither alfie nor freddie are that short!) why bother with alfred?

chloemegjess · 28/11/2008 22:18

Alfie, definatly

Lilyloo · 25/11/2008 16:56

Alfie dd 11mths was going to be called that!

mickeylou · 25/11/2008 16:51
