I have a VERY unusual name. In fact its so unusual that if I told you and you googled it the only thing that would come up would be my Facebook profile (I tried it......so as I may need to post incognito one day I can't tell you.

Anyway despite not being paricularly thrilled with my name when I was a teenager, I love it now and would love to name forthcoming DC's with something unusual.

What are the most unusual names you have heard of for both sexes???

I met a baby girl when dd was tiny who was Ebony

I always wondered if they had a second one if they'd call it Ivory.

squeaver · 19/11/2008 14:21

prmaspotter Boyd's quite common among my parents' generation in Scotland. I can think of two. I quite like it.

I was forewarned so it wasn't too bad. She was really sweet as well. If she had been a horror, it would have been so tempting to shout at her a lot

I love Superpong. Were you able to contain yourself until you get used to her name?

wotulookinat · 19/11/2008 13:16

I once taught a girl called Superpong. She was from Thailand.

Weeteeny · 19/11/2008 12:11

My DH had a friend at school called Americano, not so unusual however this was in glasgow in the 70's so would be unusual back then. He was born on 4th july hence the name.

Notquitegrownup · 19/11/2008 12:06

Lemonstartree - I had a friend used to live in a house called Shi(e)hallion!!

We were at a play centre recently, when a Dad left, calling to his sons Jenson and Harley to follow him out! Bet he drives a mini!

I knew a Merlin Hymen at school - his sister was called Fanny Hymen. This is not a joke.

apsie · 19/11/2008 11:05

Female friend of a friend is called Neladi - anagram of her older brother Daniel's name. What were her parents thinking?!!

pramspotter · 19/11/2008 08:13

Knew a boy called Thorne. He was a really popular, smart and good looking headboy type kid. Very athletic as well.

Also knew a Boyd.

BigusBumus · 18/11/2008 21:09

NotanOtterOHappyDay · 18/11/2008 20:59

Remembered it last night - very odd - my Great Grandfather

BakewellTarts · 18/11/2008 20:57

Impressed Alibean, very cool to have a Googlewhack for a name...

Not come across too outlandish names just the usual Surnames and mispellings.

Why do parents do this...?

BoffinMum · 18/11/2008 20:54

If it was twins she could have called them Gage and Mortgage!

BoffinMum · 18/11/2008 20:53

We thought it was a flippin stupid sounding name at the time, but the mum concerned swore blind it was medieval French.

Poor kid, lumbered with a name like forfeit for the rest of his days!

CoteDAzur · 18/11/2008 19:04

Here's the correct source.

CoteDAzur · 18/11/2008 19:03

Gage is not a name in France.

It is a word, though, and means:

gage, nom masculin
(1) Garantie de paiement. Synonyme garantie (English: guarantee)
(2) Lors de certains jeux, action que l'on doit accomplir si l'on perd [Jeux]. (English: forfeit)
(3) Preuve, témoignage. Ex En gage de confiance. Synonyme marque (English: token)

Nice name

BoffinMum · 18/11/2008 18:45

Gage, for a boy. Apparently it's French, but it always makes me think of car mechanics.

Wigglesworth · 18/11/2008 18:42

Prayer for a girl, not my cuppa tea.

Rindercella · 18/11/2008 18:40

Poulet - seriously? Loathe it. Trying way too hard imo. Foxes are flea ridden vermin, and Fox is no name for a boy. (or girl )
