It sounds pretty and it means 'pretty'

but will people think 'Angelina' straight away?

I'm just trying to sort out another list to show DH

Apart from Angelina, the only context I have ever heard the word Jolie is in the French expression "jolie-laide."

laide means ugly and the term is meant to mean someone who is not conventionally beautiful but who is nonetheless attractive.

However, most of the time it is used as a polite euphamism for ugly.

Until your post today I didn't know Jolie meant pretty and I always wondered why Angelina had chosen a word which I thought implied ugliness for her surname.

I once worked with a girl called Pretty

nothing like being direct about these things...

onthewarpath · 14/11/2008 12:43

Jolie means "pretty" in french. I know that the name DJAMILA (arabic name) means "pretty" or "beautiful" and I would not be surprised if most languages actually use their translation of Pretty as a girls name. I think it is a charming name indeed, I have never heard it yet but it could become very fashionable to be called Jolie.

I know one. I think it's nice. Oh - the one I know is in her 30s!

Fimbo · 14/11/2008 12:41

I agree with NP. I think Julie is very retro and you are not likely to come across many babies with this name. I know someone who spell it Ju-Leigh if you wanted to be really different!

How long do you have to go?

nailpolish · 14/11/2008 12:40

and its maybe too much like Joey?
chidlren round here still use that as an insult

nailpolish · 14/11/2008 12:39

i prefer Julie

Jolie is like a clowns name

ruty · 14/11/2008 12:38

Joely is very pretty, not keen on Jolie.

giddykipper · 14/11/2008 12:33

You could go for Joely, which is a first name

EnchantedwithEdwardCullen · 14/11/2008 12:33

PMSL at that Joleen cream, I worked in a chemist and remember this old dear with hair as black as soot and a ginger 'tash because she used to use that stuff!

No - please no.

How about Annabel or Isabel shortened to Belle or Bella. Same meaning, but more choices.

Imagine being a fat, spotty shy teenager called Jolie.

lulumama · 14/11/2008 12:31

it is not really a name is it? it's a word..

you will have to put up with her being called Jolly, rather than the softer Jolie

or Joe-lee pronunciation

IMO

Dragonbutter · 14/11/2008 12:31

i like it.
but i'm not much of a heat reader so wouldn't think of angelina straight away.

belgo · 14/11/2008 12:31

it's pretty., I know someone with that name.

georgiemum · 14/11/2008 12:30

Is it really a first name though?

southeastastra · 14/11/2008 12:30

reminds me a bit of joleen cream bleach
