loving Thaddeus and Zebedee

Z was on my shortlist for this baby and if i had been braver

I was still QUITE brave and there was a very special silence yesterday followed by 'Why?' when i told someone his name

Ignore negative comments Bronze and be strong - you will be glad you did!

frazzledoldbag34 · 06/11/2008 21:12

Sorry, not keen.

MrsJamesMartin · 06/11/2008 21:09

I like all of them although not too keen on Cornelius.
Seth is my fave, its ds' name.

Fillyjonk · 06/11/2008 21:09

eh? about ezra

I know several small ezras, I don't think any of them are jewish

most old testament names steeped in jewish history are also significant for christians. i know ezras a bit of a special case cos hes more important perhaps through tradition iykwim but still.

i think calling a Protestant child Chaim or Moshe or Ya'el might raise an eyebrow but ezra seems fine!

Liffey · 06/11/2008 21:06

Hmm. The hebrew didn't work!

Liffey · 06/11/2008 21:06

Just a tiny bit of info about Ezra. Whatever name you choose, you'll do a bit of research, so if you did go ahead with it, you'd be interested in this information I guess!

Ezrâ was a Jewish priestly scribe who led about 5,000 Israelite exiles living in Babylon to their home city of Jerusalem in 459 BCE or 428 BCE or 397 BCE. He reconstituted the dispersed Jewish community on the basis of the Torah. According to the Hebrew Bible, Ezra resolved the identity threat which arose by the intermarriage between Jews and foreigners and provided a definite reading of the Torah. Ezra is highly respected in the Jewish tradition. His knowledge of the Torah is considered to have been equal with Moses. Like Moses, Enoch, and David, Ezra is given the honorific title of "scribe" and is referred to as עזרא הסופר or "Ezra the scribe" in the Jewish tradition.

Fillyjonk · 06/11/2008 21:04

i like solomon and elijah

quite like jesse too

Liffey · 06/11/2008 21:00

Yes, true. I do recognise that of course but there are some names which have 'gone mainstream' such as Reuben and Hannah and Samuel.

But some such as Ezra seem particularly steeped in meaning and Jewish history.

bronze · 06/11/2008 21:00

And a Jew named Joseph wouldn't be odd.
I'm pretty sure there was an old testament one who had a musical written about him.

OP posts:
bronze · 06/11/2008 20:58

Except the old testament is part of the bible as much as the new testament is.

OP posts:
Liffey · 06/11/2008 20:54

Well, As you probably know, Leo, Gregory, Dominic, Nicholas, Christopher, Gabriel, Joseph - are particularly Christian names which would raise an eyebrow if borne by a Jewish person.

Ezra on a non Jewish person is a bit like the reverse of that.

No more than that really. That's my logic.

suwoo · 06/11/2008 20:37

Apart from Zebedee (err magic roundabout)all of those were on my boys list as was Silas. I love them all!

bronze · 06/11/2008 20:35

Or should I only use Ezra if my other two were Hanani and Nehemiah

OP posts:
bronze · 06/11/2008 20:33

I don't understand your logic Liffey

jeanjeannie · 06/11/2008 20:23

I love Seth. Think it's one of those names that will still sound good when the cute little boy becomes a man!

Sorry - really not keen on the rest - tad too biblical for me.

MrsMattie · 06/11/2008 19:54

They're Old Testament - not necessarily 'Jewish'.

Like most of them.

noonki · 06/11/2008 19:53

I don't think it matters about faith too much does it? Are people insulted if you use a name that is associated with another faith?

I could understand Jesus or Mohammed being a bit problematic but would have thought that names that just happen to have been in the bible is a bit rich.

Mind having no faith myself I might be wrong.

Umlellala · 06/11/2008 19:52

Heaven forbid, a boy might be mistaken for a girl

TheBlonde · 06/11/2008 19:45

I don't like any of them

Liffey · 06/11/2008 19:44

If you have sons with names from the new testament, then I actually think it would be a bit inappropriate to use Ezra, for example.

IhaveaSONcalledJesse · 06/11/2008 19:29

Ahem!

Elijah is another favourite one.

Like all the others, but not as much.

bronze · 06/11/2008 19:21

Should add that I wouldn't be funny about a non biblical name though (dds isnt) its just that I like a lot of the old testament names. Some more than others.

OP posts:
bronze · 06/11/2008 19:17

No I'm a Christian. Our other two dss are new testament.
