What names can be shortened to Tilly?

My DH would like to call our DD Tilly, which I think is a nickname, not a proper name. I dont like Hilda, Tilda or Matilda though. Can anyone think of any other girls names that could have Tilly or Till as a nickname?

Tilly is also a real name. My name is Tilly and it’s not short for anything. I’ve also met someone else whose name is just Tilly. Just because it more likely to be used as a nickname doesn’t mean it’s only a nickname

You can call her Tilly. I think Tilly is lovely and strong enough for an actual name. You're going to call her Tilly anyway so why confuse things. Can always change the spelling slightly, Tillie, Tilli...

I wanted Tilly for our daughter and as a last minute panic I thought she needed a proper name so she's Matilda. I wish we'd just called her Tilly since her long name is totally redundant. Clothilde (sp?) is a french name I always thought was pretty.

Please bear in mind though that in some parts of the country Tilly is another name for fanjo - i.e. boys have willies, girls have tillies.

Pretty name though.

Personally I wouldn't use just Tilly. DD has a friend called Tilly, but it doesn't feel like a 'real' name to me, and I have a nickname as a name for one of my DCs. DS1 is 'Bobby' just Bobby, because I really didn't like Robert, whereas DS2 is 'Alex' shortened from Alexander. I think we all have different opinions on what counts as a whole name

I think it is used as a name in its own right but ikwym about wanting something longer. DD is a Matilda and it doesn't really get used at the moment. I think its more suited to older dc's or adults and is a bit too grown up for a small child. She may chose to use it or another abbreviation herself when she's older.

I love Ottilie as well though. Very pretty

Does it really matter if it's a nickname? Loads of once nicknames are now used as 'proper' names; Robbie (Robert), Cassy, Sam, Milly, Joe, Beth, Max, Zak... The list goes on! If you like the name Tilly, I'd use it. It beats apple or coco imo and I think it's a lovely name

My niece is called Tilly, again not short for anything. I personally don't see it as a nickname but consider it a 'proper' name.

This is an endearing admonishment used for a female Scouser who has ideas above her station. The male equivalent is 'Dicky Mint'.

i thought it was just a nice/silly nickname,
