Bracken or Brychan is a perfectly fine name. It's just that it is traditionally a boy's name.

Atlanta - again a fine name. I'm just personally not keen on names that are also cities/towns.

lunamoon2 · 29/10/2008 11:21

Blimey, when I saw the post I didn't think the name Bracken would be so villified.

I grew up knowing a Bracken who is now a mother herself, yes at the time it was unusual and I remember thinking as a child what a strange name, but what the hell.

I think it is quite nice and reminds me of the counrtyside. I do not think it is masculine, again probably because Bracken will always remind me of that child I knew and she was not masculine at all.

As for the people with animals named Bracken well you can call your pet whatever you like, lots of people call their dogs Ben does that mean you cannot call your baby Ben? No of course not!!

Sycupatree · 28/10/2008 11:06

I know an Atlanta. She is in her mid forties, and a double barrelled aristo.

My inverted snobbery assumes her parents got it right...

Did they not Nappyaddict?

We named DD before she was born and MIL said "You're not going to name her that are you?!" We just said, "Yes we are, that's what we're telling you." Bloody evil SIL sent and email saying we were idiots because we hadn't met her. Really annoyed us at the time. We have a sex & name for DC2 but will not be sharing as no-one will complain once the babe is born and owns the name.

What a shame people have to be so down on your choices. Your baby has to fit into your family and I'm guessing one called Alice or Hannah wouldn't feel quite at home

SD - are you going to share what it is? I am intrigued now.

SoupDragon · 27/10/2008 18:14

Has anyone ever posted on a birth announcement "OMG, what a cr*p name?" I don't think I've seen it happen. The Baby Name topic is fair game IMO.

Quite frankly, I wish my parents had run their favoured name past an internet forum before naming me.

SoupDragon · 27/10/2008 18:13

"i am staying wioth my original choice beacause it fits "

Bet you take one look at the baby and think "OMG, she's a Belinda."

Anyway- it's far better to get the whole range of reactions out of the way when the baby is still a bump.

nappyaddict · 27/10/2008 17:50

sits on hands

Sycupatree · 27/10/2008 17:44

It's Atlanta.

nappyaddict · 27/10/2008 17:33

Btw is it Atlanta or Atalanta?

nappyaddict · 27/10/2008 17:32

oh Aspen probably not a good suggestion if your other dd is Atlanta.

MmeTussaudsChmberOfChocHobnobs · 27/10/2008 16:13

Good for you Tink, if that is the name that you have chosen then go for it.

I would not go for such an unusual name but I admire people who are brave enough to do so. Once the baby is here (and I hope she takes her time!) then she will just be Bracken.

You maybe should hold off on telling Auntie Willma though, Tink.

Although, after all the comments on this thread I guess nothing is going to phase you

BabyBaby123 · 27/10/2008 16:07

Atlanta and Scarlett go better than Atlanta and Bracken imo.

Atlanta and Scarlett are not particularly unusual round here I have to say but Bracken is of the Brogen, Regan, Tegan variety imo

autumnwardrobeonthecheap · 27/10/2008 16:06

good for you Tink it's a lovely name xx

tinkisinthe3rdtrimester · 27/10/2008 15:44

i only went with scarlett beacause i dared to start a thread on the name bracken which i luv and think is so pretty , got more or less all negative responses so picked the next name that i liked scarlett just doesnt sit as well for me. i am staying wioth my original choice beacause it fits

is the OP Welsh?

SesHasapinkline · 27/10/2008 15:17

Woooaaah!!!

FWIW - there is nothing offensive about the name that tink has chosen. We can all have our opinions - mine is that it is v pretty but a little too unusual for me. It is her choice and she wasn't asking for our opinion, she was letting those of us interested know that she's settled on a name. It may not be what I would choose but then, I'm hoping that the names I have picked out for DC1 will be ones that lots of other people will not choose either!

Thank goodness we all like different names as otherwise life would be very boring, and very complicated if we all had the same name!

autumnwardrobeonthecheap · 27/10/2008 15:10

Kittywise, I know at least 4 children who have that name in Wales!

kittywise · 27/10/2008 14:33

FGS If you don't want people to comment then don't post on here

I actually do think this whole name is a wind up because no one in their right mind would actually think of it as a name to give a child(poor kid)

SoupDragon · 27/10/2008 12:52

OP did say "you will all be relieved to know that I am going to stick with Bracken " and some were pointing out that we're not relieved at all.
