Shireen?

Am addicted to 'The Riches' and love the name 'Shireen' from it. But could one call a baby this? And does it sound a bit, ahem, [dare I say it] chav? Or is it elegant and unusual?
Please advise oh wise Mumsnetters!

I always thought it was spelt Cyrene.

Vanfurgstan · 20/02/2012 22:35

I love it. It's a very traditional afghan, Pakistani, Indian name. It means sweet like the poster above said. There is a very popular Pashto song on it played at almost all Pashtun weddings.

Just because you haven't heard of a name doesn't mean its chavvy or made up. I hate the term chav

PineCones · 20/02/2012 22:27

It's amazing how people are so quick to judge what is 'chavvy' and what isn't. it would be nice if people could just do a google search before condemning a name that is thousands of years old and means 'sweet'.

I am currently reading "Samarkand" by Amin Maalouf.
Last night, a new character was introduced, Shireen a beautiful Persian princess, and I thought that that was a lovely name.
And not chavvy

CoteDAzur · 30/11/2008 14:37

frazzle - The name is "Shirin". It is Persian and Turkish. Look up the legend of "Farhad and Shirin".

It means "cute".

I abhor made up spellings. If you go with this name, please use the real spelling.

IllegallyBrunette · 30/11/2008 14:20

An ex mner had a little girl called Shireen iirc.

BabyBaby123 · 30/11/2008 14:09

it depends - if it's a name which is used in your culture then it's ok - if you are white (making assumptions here... and your child will be white British) then no, sounds pikey, she would have to have gold hoop ear rings and a pink buggy with a name like Shireen....

littlemissm · 30/11/2008 13:55

My friend has a lil girl called shireen. I f you like it go wth it its your choice no 1 elses.I called my baby Tahlia which i know some people disliked but i dont care i like it.

FriendNeedsHelp · 30/11/2008 13:30

Ricky on Eastenders had a girlfriend called Shireen, of Middle Eastern heritage iirc.

byroadorbyriver · 30/11/2008 13:28

My sister's name is Shereen, Should have been spelt shireen. But when family moved to england dad let her spell it how she wanted! I prefer her spelling! Its not chavvey at all!

My sister is stunningly beautiful, unique artistic funny and genrally wonderfull!

Ive met a couple of shireens, but only one Shereen! :D

questions2008 · 15/11/2008 13:12

Shireen is actually a popular Iranian girl's name, so not made up in case you were wondering.

Plonker · 09/11/2008 22:37

I know a fabulously funny and quirky Shireen, for that reason alone, i love it

KellyTom · 09/11/2008 19:47

Actually........Shireen is a lovely name! I have a friend Shireen and shes beautiful and exotic! Claudia? Annabel? Abigail? Just name it Britney slap a burberry tracksuit on her and get it over with.

frazzledoldbag34 · 19/10/2008 21:35

Not even for the hamster? Surely it's not THAT bad!

OrmIrian · 19/10/2008 16:49

No.

RachieB · 19/10/2008 16:48

it sounds chavvy and/or made up!

Claudie is cute

nickeldime · 19/10/2008 16:25

Looks like it's used much in Iranian from the page below. How about Shyrin?

Heated · 18/10/2008 21:43

Definitely a hamster name!

In fact, that's going to be my stock answer for all dubious, hormonally MAD babynames

frazzledoldbag34 · 18/10/2008 21:32

Or perhaps I can pursuade DD1 to call the hamster she's getting for Christmas Shireen............instead of Rox which is her current fave name.

Think I'll stick with Annabel.
Will put Shireen into my mental list of names I'd have liked to use but never actually would. Maybe when I'm an old lady I'll get a siamese cat and call it Shireen!

Annabel was nearly dd1's name, and would have loved Claudia also, but dh has vetoed.

meandmyjoe · 18/10/2008 18:41

Annabel is a beautiful name. How about Abigail or is that too common nowdays?

Nancy66 · 18/10/2008 18:00

ugly name. and, yes, a bit chav

Liffey · 18/10/2008 17:27

Do you like Juliet? That seems in the same style as Annabel and Claudia.

Liffey · 18/10/2008 17:24

Annabel and Claudia are both beautifully modest, feminine in a strong way, pretty but not frilly, unusual but not odd, upmarket but not pretentious...

Stick with this type of name! You are overthinking things now!
