Tamsin and James Emmanuel

Mirissa and Marco Emmanuel

(Mirissa is a beautiful beach in Sri Lanka where dh is from)

LOL Lacka but he is soo cool!!!!!!!

Anna8888 · 17/10/2008 09:42

I wouldn't give twins names with the same initial or a similar sounding syllable. It's twee and doesn't differentiate between two entirely separate siblings.

So Tamsin and James would be out, as would Mirissa and Marco Emmanuel.

LackaDAISYcal · 17/10/2008 09:33

you have such an exotic surname MerryM that you can get away with lovely exotic sounding firstnames.

Our surname is so common, that a lot of our choices are famous people/slebs/historical figures and it kind of puts you off....one of the reasons why Samuel has dropped off our list!

Dozymare · 17/10/2008 06:11

so come on then - give us your short list!!!

MerryMarigold · 16/10/2008 17:59

Dh refuses Mirissa and Marco! Am worried about Mirissa and James even if I could persuade Dh to go for Mirissa. Spent ages looking at names last night, back to drawing board. Think am gonna have a list and just wait and see if inspiration strikes. Added Evelyn, Charis and Kirsten to girls! Mmmm...am liking Jonathan, MonkeyM now you mention it.

I would agree that misspelling is rife nowadays. Have learned that it is not just foreign names that get it since I married (but they were a bit funnier before)!

Pronunciation perplexes me sometimes tho, how on earth people can think my surname is 'Inns' as in pubs or 'Einz' as in beans is beyond me.... But still nothing compared to what I used to get called! Makes life more interesting I suppose and my maiden name was always a good talking point!

Anyway have you decided yet MerryMarigold???

lulururu · 16/10/2008 11:38

i think mirissa and marco is nice. i have b/g twins and i wanted them to have at least complimentary names as they will so often be said together, however, i completely unintentionally ended up with two names that both start with R and are both RU so i have ruby and rufus and it rolls together well and i used to be kind of embarrassed that they were both RU's like i had sought out two RU names but it just happened and the response is always "awwwwww, ruby and rufus" from people, everyone seems to go all gooey when they hear their names, its really funny. twins are a unit, i think that its nice to acknowledge it but yes agree on holly and molly being too over the top. also with two names that are very different, i know adult twins, chandra and andrew and they both felt ripped off for different reasons.

Obs I would say that these days, the standard of spelling in this country has declined massively since we were at school. So even if, (like you and I), you have a fairly normal name, people always misspell it. My DH is Jonathan. I believe there is only one form of this name. Yet you would not believe how many variations you see of it.

Oblomov · 15/10/2008 23:02

Spelling ?
God my name is about as common as it gets.
I have to spell it constantly.
" No its not ael, its el,"
I thought el was the norm, but apparently not.
And I have to spell my surname all the time aswell. One of the most normal, well known, easily described surnames, based on a famous street. Those of you on Facebook who know what my name is, my god.
So spelling, is not a real issue to me.
Is it to most people ?

dinkymum · 15/10/2008 22:50

Mirissa and Marco. I like Mirissa and love the sentiment behind it!

LackaDAISYcal · 15/10/2008 20:22

bob and gill are fab merry

I can confirm the same initial as a parent is a reet royal pita. It seemed to give my mum carte blanche to open my mail when I was growing up

Mind you, that can happen at any age.....I am Mrs J and DH is Mr SJ and depending on typefaces and how awake we are, we often open each other's mail. But that's OK as we have no secrets from each other, unlike the deeply guarded private life of the teenager!

I love sparkles suggestion to mix em all up a bit

they are all lovely names though, whichever way you choose to do it.

Leoloopydoo · 15/10/2008 16:07

As a mother of twins I would say don't do the M&M thing! I think the names need to be and sound very different if not its confusing for them when they are small. Its also really annoying to have the same first initials as a sibling or parent even if you have middle names.

Oblomov · 15/10/2008 15:54

I PERSONALLY think :
The M and M thing is not twee.
I do like Marco and Marissa/Mirissa.
Boys like more normal names, than unusual. but maybe James is just a bit too simplistic, when linked to Marrisa.

Middle names are more important to girls that boys.
Mine is Louise and is f**k boring, lets be honest.
Whereas MonkeyM has been traumatised by the lack of hers
If your ds has family middle name. It is important that the twins have similar. I.e do same for all your children.

My parents gave me the most beautiful middle name and were put off making it my first name for spelling/miss-pronouncing reasons.

I wish they had just given me that name tho!! Had to constantly spell/pronounce my (Italian) surname so I got used to it! Now even with my more 'regular/indigenous' married surname I am STILL spelling/pronouncing it!!

So basically that wouldn't put me off a name if I loved it...

MerryMarigold · 15/10/2008 14:59

The spelling thing. My name is spelled 'unusually' but I don't mind people getting it wrong really, 'cos I REALLY like my name.

I always thought finding out the sex helped with sorrting names. NAAAAAAAH!

Obs, middle name for me is more a way to make a link to family/ memory eg. Ds's middle name is my grandmother's maiden name. It's VERY exotic and he is never ever going to use it except maybe as an initial, but it'll be nice for him to know why he has itwhen he's 25 though till then no doubt he will hate it. These would be similar, not going to give a middle name just for the sake of it, but to 'remember' someone important.

obs I don't have a middle name . This grieved me immensely as a child. I invented one in the end....

sparkletoes · 15/10/2008 14:44

I think you are lucky as your surname is LOVELY so suits them all IMO!

You seem to have lots of Ms whereas I have too many Ns in my choices!!

Ok enough waffle I like Tamsin and Marco. Could even be Tamsin Mirissa and Marco James...

Good luck! xx

Oblomov · 15/10/2008 14:40

Ds doesn't have a middle name. Ds2 won't either. Just assumed everyone else on the planet did.

Oblomov · 15/10/2008 14:38

I like Mirissa particularly.
Worried about spelling it out constantly.
Marissa is more ..... english ?
Waiting for middle names.

MerryMarigold · 15/10/2008 14:38

Thanks so much. Gosh, they'll probably end up Bob and Gill at this rate!

It was always James and Tamsin till now (the 'z' sound kind of uniting them). I was never THAT into James but just thought it sounded good with Tamsin, which I fell in love with one day. However, I just can't for the life of me think of my little girl as a Tamsin for some reason and have been trying ever so hard for past month to call her that but can't. James actually I can manage. D still likes Tamsin.

Mirissa was thought of for our first baby and I suddenly remembered and thought, I like that and I really like Miri - just feel more comfortable with it. Marco was a recent attempt at something that sounds 'good together' and was also dh's grandfather. But could be Mirissa and James, I suppose, though feel like one is a bit exotic and one is very plain.

What d'ya think of Bob and Gill?!

Oh dozy, ds1 is Oliver.

MonkeyMargot · 15/10/2008 13:47

MerryM I really love Mirissa - only problem will be (as others have already pointed out) the misspelling of it - as in Marissa - the gorgeous Mischa Barton from The O.C.
I also like Marco - both the M&M names sound fab with your exotic surname. I don't think the double M thing is twee.

I'm not as keen on Tamsin but that's purely and simply to do with bad memories of a girl from school...
James - can't go wrong.

funnypeculiar · 15/10/2008 13:28

Mirissa and James, I think (I have two kids with the same first letter, but think I'd avoid it with twins ... more of a need for separate identities, I reckon)

ChocOrange05 · 15/10/2008 13:26

I prefer Tamsin and James but both choices are nice.

Good luck Merry!

FlirtyThirty · 15/10/2008 13:16

I like Mirissa and Marco...and quite like the duplication of the initial 'M'. I don't think it's twee, in a way that I hate rhyming twins names eg Holly and Molly sort of thing.

Oh, and whilst the spelling may be a challenge occasionally, I think the importance to you of the name Mirissa far outways that.

Good luck!
