What name do you secretly love but would never use for your child?

For me it's Silas - it reminds me of the adventure programmes I used to watch as a kid. I think one of my first crushes must have been on a character called Silas.

I did suggest it for DS1 (vetoed by DP), but thinking about it I wouldn't want to call my son Silas and I can't really explain why.

Does anybody else have a name that they wouldn't use, but really like nonetheless...?

I have always loved Jolyon as a name because I love the Forsyte saga books and the character of Old Jolyon is actually based on an ancestor of mine.

But DH refused to even consider on grounds that he thought it was too pretentious, and that our DS would get beaten up for having a name like that. Given that my DC know little boys called Josca, Ptolemy, Moses and Jose and haven't once batted an eyelid at any of these names, I can't help but disagree with dh, but as it turned out we had girls, so the argument was gloriously irrelevant anyway.

Dexter ... love it but far too popular

CoffeeOne · 24/01/2013 22:24

I'd love Xander if we had another DS but if we have a little girl at some point we'd like Willow and can't use both!

ilovebooks1470 · 24/01/2013 21:31

Morgana... got sick of all the Arthur legend questions though...

MummyPigandDaddyPig · 16/01/2012 15:14

LiviaAugusta (love your name btw) - I'm put off Cameron for similar reasons :(

Ruby and Scarlett. Always loved them, but seeming to get increasingly popular - not that there's anything wrong with that per se, it would just get confusing imo. Anyway, I've used Scarlett for a pet now Grin

EllenandBump · 15/01/2012 19:41

I love the name Elle-louise, but obviously couldnt use that for a little boy!! And a little too similar to mine, someone would say ell and we would both have been looking around!

LiviaAugusta · 15/01/2012 19:19

My 'can't use' name is Blair- love the name, it would go great with our surname but there's no way I could use it given the political associations unfortunately.

woolly76 · 15/01/2012 06:17

Malcolm

Theas18 · 14/01/2012 23:25

Florence. Lovely name but not with our surname!!

ukulelelady · 14/01/2012 23:25

Frankie for a girl, but with the saturdays...is that not like calling your daughter britney or beyonce?

ukulelelady · 14/01/2012 23:21

I love seth and also love Noah and Gabriel but DH hates them,

Have loved jacob and isabella for years (pre vampire movies) but don't like the twilight connotations. Also love Arthur but DH's bosses son is called it and looks weird.

PineCones · 25/08/2011 22:21

Livened · 11/08/2011 16:43

EdwardorEricCantDecide · 11/08/2011 07:53

Jesse for a boy

Tjaden for a boy, character in All quiet on the Western front

jenniec79 · 09/08/2011 22:51

Is Hal short for Harold?

jenniec79 · 09/08/2011 22:50

Some names I love are already in use by close enough to not use friends IYSWIM.

Frances (for a girl, may still go with Francis (family name) for a boy) and Lysbeth are 2 off the top of my head. They might be able to be middle names....

DPs surname is a boys' first name I would have considered if it wouldn't make me seem insane! It also precludes the girls' version which I always liked since reading one in one of the EB series!

There's a reasonable list of "Not A Possibility - Knew One Who Was A Cow".
