What name do you secretly love but would never use for your child?

For me it's Silas - it reminds me of the adventure programmes I used to watch as a kid. I think one of my first crushes must have been on a character called Silas.

I did suggest it for DS1 (vetoed by DP), but thinking about it I wouldn't want to call my son Silas and I can't really explain why.

Does anybody else have a name that they wouldn't use, but really like nonetheless...?

florrybunda, my friend Penelope (Penny) was called Tuppence as a nickname by my dad - I would never have imagined it being used as a real name, but it is lovely!

Kimi · 10/10/2008 22:05

Abraham....but DH said NO NO NO

justneedsomesleep · 10/10/2008 22:01

Scout (boy)
Ace (girl) - so we just have dd's initials as ACE and she has this nickname
Casey (boy or girl)

PictureThis · 10/10/2008 21:47

Sorrell. I know, it's a bit hippy dippy but I secretly like it.

sharonsuperstarre · 10/10/2008 21:44

my gorgeous sons are Noah and Leo. they are as cute as their names! if i had girls i liked maude and poppy

IhaveaSONcalledJesse · 10/10/2008 21:32

As you can see we were brave enough to go with Jesse for our son! We still love it and have no regrets. He's a bruiser too, so I don't think he'll get too much teasing...
I love Blossom and Loulou for a girl, or Nate and Laine for boys.. Really love Noah but DH won't budge on that. Went through a phase of liking Kelly for a boy, but I thing that was more for Jesse, so his brother would have a girls name too!
We have a DD called Ellie, which at the time was quite unusual, but now not so much. I'm not sure I want more, but this has been fun!

Buckets · 10/10/2008 18:16

Really wanted to call DD Merrily Morley but nobody would let me. Merrily is a favourite book character and Morley is a (male) family name.

izzybiz · 10/10/2008 18:15

I love Stanley but didn't have the guts to use it as a first name.

We have just decided to name our new baby boy George Stanley!

Horton · 10/10/2008 18:11

I have a Tabitha who we call Topsy, so I seem to have used two unusable names in one!

I like Tansy, Amity, Clemency, Felix, Dashiel, Archie and Rudy, all vetoed by DH.

radio4play · 10/10/2008 16:00

florrybunda · 10/10/2008 14:55

Sorry for gratuitous use of smileys - am over-excited by this thread!

florrybunda · 10/10/2008 14:49

Oh, I have also loved Hermione since we did A Winter's Tale by Shakespeare at school but now feel unable to use it due to Harry Pothead

Boobz · 10/10/2008 14:46

Galen is cool - but we watch Battlestar Galactica and the chief engineer (who is secrely a Cylon) is called Galen so we decided not to. And then we liked Gabriel but the baddy from Heroes is called Gabriel (aka Sylar).

You must all think I am some kind of sci-fi geek. Honestly am not.

florrybunda · 10/10/2008 14:44

Cheesesarnie, our daughter is called Tuppence and we call her Topsy for short (started off as Tuppy and evolved into Topsy)

Tuppence is probably not to everyone's taste and we thought it would prove to be rather contraversial with our rellies but we loved it so we just didn't tell anyone our name choices until she was born and named. By then it was too late any everyone's too polite to say anything negative

I'm actually reading this forum for ideas for #2 who is on the way. I've now compiled a lovely list to run by DH tonight

polester · 10/10/2008 14:41

Ezra, I love it but decided on Noah Ezra

daisyj · 10/10/2008 14:23

Mathilda - I really really love it. DH says over his dead body... hmm...

Whoever said Noah and Lola, I love those too. But DH says no. Again.

Clockface · 10/10/2008 13:45

Anastasia.

WonkaBar · 10/10/2008 13:43

We loved Galen ... and used it.

I really wanted to name my daughter Gaia, but people either loved or hated it, so we went with Juliet...but I think Gaia suits her better and wish I had used it.

LOVE Atticus, Wolfram

What is with all the Tulullah lovers (hmm)

largeginandbloodymary · 10/10/2008 12:29

I had lots of pretty names I loved when I was told that my twins would be boy/girl but in the end I had 2 boys .

Athena my favourite, Lily,Ruby,Rose, VioletPerdita

Bede for a boy - didn't have triplets

joshad · 10/10/2008 12:04

Mind you if we had a boy DH like the name Lorimer, after a his childhood hero Peter (Leeds Utd player). Guess it's just as well that we adopted!

joshad · 10/10/2008 12:00

Jezebel - but DH said absolutely not! I guess I have to agree with him on that.
I too like Lola, but again was vetoed on grounds of nobody should be called after a Manilow showgirl or a Kinks
