What name do you secretly love but would never use for your child?

For me it's Silas - it reminds me of the adventure programmes I used to watch as a kid. I think one of my first crushes must have been on a character called Silas.

I did suggest it for DS1 (vetoed by DP), but thinking about it I wouldn't want to call my son Silas and I can't really explain why.

Does anybody else have a name that they wouldn't use, but really like nonetheless...?

Girls:
Olympia - unfortunate if she turns out hefty
Zuleika - DH hates it and a mouthful with surname
Tabitha - love it but my SIL has one
Ottilie - actually, would prob. use this...

Boys:
Beau - unfortunate if he turns out to be not very beau at all
Arthur
Claud

Should add that I'm pregnant with a little girl, and my OH vetoed my two favorite names. Evelyn and Elizabeth so if I could call my daughter anything it would be one of those two names.

BananaSkin · 21/10/2008 17:29

Noddy for a toddler

blackhawk · 21/10/2008 17:22

I love Jasper for a boy, but it was the name of my old horse.

Also really love Noah but not sure if the kid would get teased everytime it rained!

MoChan · 21/10/2008 15:24

Loved Angharad but there's not a drop of welsh blood in me so felt it would be wrong. Also loved Araminta but dp said that would be wrong, and he was probably right. Went for Cecily in the end, and I think it suits her perfectly.

Poledra · 21/10/2008 13:19

Loved Maeve, but DH thought it was an old lady's name. We both liked Cara, but surname begins 'Mc' - DH would have called her Caramac, never mind anyone else!
Love Gabriel, but only have dds

LuLuBai · 21/10/2008 12:39

I love Cosmo too. Always have. But DH doesn't like any of those name (I also suggested Sholto, Jago, Milo....)

Met a toddler called Margot recently - she was fab and it made me completely rethink the name. It's great.

Ah Buckets - thanks for the clarification. Don't think I'll let a 60s radio show put me off the name Julian. It's so hard to find anything that goes with our surname that I'll keep that one on the list. We'd shorten Gabriel to Gabe anyway and I think that sounds quite tough.

I can understand why my husband vetoed Delilah for a girl though (although I really do love it!!!). I have suggested that no-one will remember Tom Jones when our kids grow up, but DH figures if he's stuck around this long....

TheLittleMermaid · 21/10/2008 10:04

I'm sure this is not how it's supposed to work but I'm getting lots of good ideas from this thread for my next baby!

BTW I have a niece called Matilda and it suits her soooo much. Means warrior princess I think and she's a fiesty little cutie. She gets called Tilda and T.

rachels103 · 20/10/2008 22:36

Arthur. But our surname sounds like an alcoholic drink (although spelt differently) so it just sounds like 'Half a...'

ShinyPinkShoes...our reception class at school had a mock christening and called the baby Tallulah !!

ilookbetterwithdrink · 20/10/2008 22:33

I love the names Ocean and India.

uvyowmami · 20/10/2008 22:32

I named my 3rd child Esme Belle, I really love the name, and people often say how pretty it is. I just wasn't brave enough to go with the choice that both my husband and I wanted - Autumn Rose. We were probably right not to go with this choice, as some members of my husbands family thought Esme was too avante garde. Its amazing how rude people can be about such things, especially when the name has already been chosen. The name I never used for my little boy was Oscar.

ilovemydog · 19/10/2008 09:59

elvis

Natbrum · 19/10/2008 09:57

I love India to go with middle name Rose, but hubby said it sounded like a hippy selling candles in an indoor market, wearing a skirt made from grass. hmm.

Buckets · 18/10/2008 19:03

Lulubai, back in the 60s Kenneth Williams used to be part of a radio ndouble act called Julian and Sandy who were camp hairdressers. Think that's where the Julian stigma comes from although it's so long ago pretty sure kids at school wouldn't have a problem with it these days.
My DH would never go for Gabriel because it contains the sound Gay . Before declaring him a homophobe, bear in mind there are 2 versions of the word Gay in current usage, one being the playground concept of any boy who doesn't conform to the 'norm' (eg one who likes girls, eeuw).

nimble · 16/10/2008 20:58

I had to use Blaise for my daughter's middle name even though I love it. You can't call someone Blaise in London's east end. Imagine Bianca a la eastenders - Blaiyyyse! urgh!

cluckyagain · 16/10/2008 15:48

Love lots of these names - have used one of them for dd2!

LuLuBai · 16/10/2008 15:43

OK - haven't managed to read all 18 pages of this thread but find that most of my favourite names are on here. But help me out - can anyone explain why you need to be brave to use Julian or Gabriel?

After hours and hours of heated debate, those are the only 2 names DH and I can agree on for a boy (with Julian in top position purely cos it sounds slightly better with our surname) so am concerned that I am missing something. If I have a DS this time will he be teased for eternity? I don't remember any Julians or Gabriels at school being teased...

I admit to being a bit out of touch (someone on MN had to inform me that Milo is a character in the tweenies the other day, which is a shame as I like that too).

FunkyChicken · 16/10/2008 04:51

Whats wrong with Francis for a boy then?

We have one and call him Frankie which is cute for a toddler and he can be Frank when he grows big and burley...!

dreamygirl · 15/10/2008 21:06

melmamof3 I know several white Naomi's including my goddaughter who's a lovely girl.
I also love the name Lucas! but DH said it was poncey and we have no boys anyway.

I used to know a girl called Aisling and toyed with it for both my DDs as I love the name and it's got a beautiful meaning but I think lots of people wouldn't know how to pronounce it. Would still consider it if I had another girl though!

snooks · 15/10/2008 20:58

Virgil
Augustus
Octavia

oh dear

Bonnycat · 15/10/2008 20:49

Farrah

northernruth · 15/10/2008 20:38

I wanted Tallulah for a girl (veto'ed!) or Ralph for a boy (ditto). Ralph was soundly abused by all friends on a night out in thepub the night before our 20 wk scan.

DH wanted either Vic or Sid for a boy (after Reeves or Vicious) - both veto'd by me!

Good job we had a girl!

MumRum · 15/10/2008 17:49
