For me it's Silas - it reminds me of the adventure programmes I used to watch as a kid. I think one of my first crushes must have been on a character called Silas.

I did suggest it for DS1 (vetoed by DP), but thinking about it I wouldn't want to call my son Silas and I can't really explain why.

Does anybody else have a name that they wouldn't use, but really like nonetheless...?

Whoops, didn't notice the rest of the thread - Offie was in reply to shortening Ophelia!

craftycottontail · 31/01/2013 21:36

or Offie?!

I love Talitha but have been banned :(

Also love Gabriel but don't think I'd be brave enough to use it.

bunnylang · 31/01/2013 14:35

Barnaby, Bartholomew and Magdelena

Barnaby, Bartholomew and Magdelena

I like hippy names; Star, Autumn, River, etc
but also love Scarlett (DH has said he would only consider it if baby comes out a red head!) and Tara, but thats prob A Gone With The Wind thing..!
I also love Ibrahim (Abraham) and Eesa (Jesus) but wouldnt work to me unless from an Asian community

thundernlightning · 31/01/2013 04:48

Matilda (nn Maud). Too old fashioned, I'm told!

pinkandyellowbutterfly · 31/01/2013 00:52

Hermione: I loved the look and sound of it, before 1997... unfortnately it is FAR too character specific to be used by anyone other than JK Rowling!

EugenesAxe · 30/01/2013 23:34

Angharad... DH would veto and a hard consonant ending, which doesn't go with the start of our surname as you'd have to glottle-stop to pronounce properly.

Edmund for same reason.
Also love Beatrix nickname Bea (bey-ah) but DH would veto.
Trelawney - a bit too Cornish.

Crikeyblimey · 30/01/2013 23:25

Oooh - my great nephew is called Silas and he so suits it :)

My choice would be Mabel but our surname rhymes with it (same number of letters too!) so couldn't saddle a child with that.

wiltingfast · 30/01/2013 23:21

Oh and Lola! LOVE Lola. Dh liked it too but could you really use it?

wiltingfast · 30/01/2013 23:19

Barney (that bloody dinosaur)
Anna (doesn't work with surname bion)
Amos (would he be mossy?)
Thaddeus (never dared mention this one!)
Milo (doesn't work with surname)

zimbomaman · 30/01/2013 22:55

Antoinette. French DH vetoed with a 'look'. We do live rather close to Versailles and DD2 would have been a lovely Antionette.

Yay4may · 30/01/2013 22:53

Suri. Really love it but hate Tom Cruise association.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 30/01/2013 22:41

Judas
Jezebel

muppetthecow · 30/01/2013 14:32

Aelfric and Oswin - I love all the old Saxon names. I blame a childhood reading Cadfael novels! Wink

ThroughTheRoundWindow · 27/01/2013 20:33

PhoebeC - Ariadne is a fabulous name. If you love it, do it!

(You could give her an "ordinary" middle name so if she hates it later she has a choice??)

Wishfulmakeupping · 27/01/2013 10:32

Henry but OH hates the name
Arthur for same reason :(

He loves scarlett I vetoed as too popular

poorbuthappy · 26/01/2013 18:24

Cordelia. Yes I am a Puffy fan, but I am also Welsh and apparently it is Welsh.
DH hates it.

Sashapineapple · 26/01/2013 18:11

Tallulah, I love it and was very nearly DD's middle name but DH was having none of it.

TerraNotSoFirma · 26/01/2013 17:59

Thadius.
Sebastian.
Nathaniel.
Rafferty.

Meredith.

All vetoed by DH and my family as being too poncey.

Thought I could name our new puppy Rafferty, but no vetoed again and he is being named Barney :)

Harrysmummysarah1 · 26/01/2013 17:25

Seraphina- dh veoted it. :(
Would of had Sarah but I didn't like it on his own.
Leah- dh again didn't like I still love it
Alec- dh didn't like again
Lucas - sister had already used it!
We ended up with:
Martha
Darcey
Harry

Sister just had a baby girl and she wanted Harriet but wouldn't use it as we had a Harry. She's a Helena.

andadietcoke · 26/01/2013 11:41

Charlie. Surname is Brown.

PhoebeC · 26/01/2013 11:31

Ariadne. Has anyone said that yet?

My husband and I both love it (we're a pair of sad Poirot enthusiasts).

It goes with our surname too.

But we just couldn't, could we?

Mellymog · 26/01/2013 11:07

Justin

Oh for a world without Justin Beiber.

CheerfulYank · 26/01/2013 03:46
