Any ideas for boys and girls names that will cross both cultures? Feel it's important for our child to inherit something from both of us. Ideas welcome

Asha - means hope in sanskrit but sounds a bit irish too....

ickletickle · 26/03/2009 22:23

bob

LaDiDaDi · 26/03/2009 21:24

I like both Neela and Nuala for a girl.

brightonbaby · 26/03/2009 21:22

Tara crosses both cultures. It's a very Irish name meaning the 'hill' where the Kings sat and also means 'bright star' in Hindi (or Sanskrit).

mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 25/03/2009 09:35

well I am asian and we used my middle name for dds'middle name so we are both called
Nazrine
It is a muslim name although it does have christian connotations

MarchNowFebMum · 25/03/2009 09:32

I am German, my husband Indian. We could not finds one that crossed both worlds AND we both liked but here are some possibilities:

Leila/Lela/Lila/Laila
Seren/Zarin
Meera/Mira/Amira
Mila/Meela/Milla
Kira/Kiri/ Kiara
Mallory/Mahlori

I thought Farrah was a nice suggestion.

I really liked Kiran/Ciaran/Kieran, that would have liked been the name if we had a boy.

I only have girls names! We ended up doing a Indian first name and a German/family name as middle. Her last name is Indian and I think this is important - this is not our last name but for instance Elizabeth Patel sounds off.

My husband is indian, I'm Irish, we insist our kids names are both, and I've been able to make both my mom and his mom happy w/ the names we've chosen My son is Deven, My daughter Shyla, my future child will be Shaan if it is a boy, Ava or Ela if it is a girl, another boy options: Kiran, Cole another girl option: Ena, Kira, Kiara, Neala, Alisha

Thanks everyone for their suggestions, liking quite a few of them - but we can't seem to agree. My partner is Neil, so that's out and he is stuck on Joseph / Yusef which has significance in both families, but I'm not keen on as 1st name (we are convinced it will be a boy) Girls names seem to be much easier.
Thanks,

cheltmum · 03/01/2009 18:58

My children are also from a mixed Irish/Indian background and we tried like you to find names which worked in both cultures. What we found was that it's easy if you have girls - there's Tara, Nina and Anita for starters. It's much more tricky if you have boys. Neil works in both countries, but I don't like it personally. The only other ideas we could come up with were Indian names which could be shortened to English names eg. Robindra (Robin), Harvinder (Harvey), Harinder (Harry). I do know of one little boy called Alekshander, in an attempt to make his name sound both Indian and English.

As for me, I had two boys and after much debate they ended up with Indian first names and English middle names - but they use their middle names, so are known as Max and Sam!

Hope this helps.

audley · 02/01/2009 19:22

The best girls name I can come up with is Janna - reward or present in from al-janna in the Koran and Jana - in Irish means God is Gracious. Pronounced the same way according to some quick surfing anyway! Pretty names

LiffeyAnnaLivia · 02/01/2009 18:14

Neil/Neal Ciaran/Kiran

Rowan/Rohan

Fatima7 · 02/01/2009 18:13

Please keep your suggestions coming in for Indian / Irish names as we have yet to find anything we are definite on, so the more ideas the better! Many thanks,

Sarah works. Farrah?

Liffey · 05/10/2008 20:27

Rowan/Rohan
Kieran/Kiran
Neel/Neil (sorry not sure how Indian Neil is spelt but I know there is a name pronounced the same.)

heather1980 · 30/09/2008 22:21

i know a muslim girl called maryam, can't get more irish than mary!

Boulders · 30/09/2008 19:03

If you want a Muslim name then you would be best to look at a crossover name which is from Islam and Christianity. I don't think there are any Islamic and Irish names that are the same but could be wrong! But lots of Biblical names are used in Ireland, the ones I can think of that are also Islamic are Adam, Zakariya, Miriam, Sara.

cremolafoam · 30/09/2008 18:36

Shayan ( intelligent/Hindi)
Seamus or Sean j( James or John in Irish)

cremolafoam · 30/09/2008 18:32

Aanya- which means gracious in Hindi
Aine( pronounced Anya) Fairy Queen in Celtic folklore

Fatima7 · 30/09/2008 18:29

The first name is particularly important and we feel there will be ones that will have identity for both, so will keep thinking. Cheers

Hey everyone, thanks for your responses, lots of good ideas - keep them coming in please - giving us something to think about. We have until April, so lots of thinking time. We are wanting names that are Irish / Indian but from Muslim background in particular. Many many thanks!

Why not give your child a first name from one culture and a middle name from the other, rather than a made-up sounding name?

Brightfield · 30/09/2008 10:25

Arun/Arran
