It took us ages to name our DS - he had no name for two weeks so in the end I caved and went with an acceptable suggesstion from DH.

However he really does look like a name I had in mind for him but immediately rejected because I really felt it didn't fit with our surname at all.

So please tell me Wilfred Wilks would not have been a good idea. He really does look like a little 'Wilfie'.

We went with Michael by the way - it's OK he's gorgeous and it does suit him but still......

If it is relevant DDs are Emily and Poppy.

Wilfred rocks.

But Wilfred Wilks sounds like Manfred Mann.

Now, Manfred Wilks might have been an idea...

Momino · 15/10/2008 10:53

just bringing this one back up because I love the name Wilfred but we have the same problem. our surname just sounds silly with it: Wilfred Whelan. all baby would need is a 'w' middle name and would be www dot somthing. it's a no-go therefore if we have a boy. sigh

LurleneLumpkin · 26/09/2008 21:37

That was me by the way......

It was a close thing for our Wilks' too. My inlaws had two boys who would have rather poked their eyes out with red hot pokers than have DCs but my DH crumbled in the end and now we have a DS . So the Chelsea (but originally Wiltshire) Wilks' continue - woohoo

about the guildford branch though...

wilkos · 26/09/2008 21:20

no there arent, my dad is the last one and he had two girls, so bye bye the Wilks's from Guildford

LurleneLumpkin · 26/09/2008 21:07

Really, there aren't that many about apparently!

my link won't work

well that was a suprise when i opened this thread, my maiden name was wilks

hence wilkos!

LurleneLumpkin · 26/09/2008 21:00

It's really nice to hear all the positive comments for 'Michael'. I have always liked the name.

When he was born he looked like a 'Charlie' but we thought Charlie Wilks sounded far too much like an East End Gangster, and since he is likely to take after his Dad and look like an aggressive-looking rugby pro we thought better of it .

erm....my pregnancy hormone influenced choice was.....'Jethro'

For anyone who would like to see himhere is a photo of my little man.

I like the name Wilfred but you have the wrong surname for that. Nothing wrong as a nickname though...

GrapeJelly · 26/09/2008 15:36

He might have been stuck with Wiffy Wilks all the way through school. Michael is a much better name!

lunamoon2 · 26/09/2008 14:37

Michael is so much better than Wilfred

x

pgwithnumber3 · 26/09/2008 10:52

Michael is a cool name, I know of two young Michaels, one gets Mikey a lot which I also love.

My Granddad was Harry Harrison which used to cause sniggers so I think you have saved a lot of hassle in the future for him. Willy Wilkes.

TigerFeet · 26/09/2008 10:49

Not a fan of Wilf at all, I have to admit.

Mickey Wilks sounds kinda cool though

crumpet · 26/09/2008 10:46

Nothing against either name individually, but the combination of Wilfred Wilks would have got him teased in the playground. Right decision

TwoMore · 26/09/2008 10:41

You made the right decision, Michael is much better Can you find a little nick name for him until he grows into it?

hecate · 26/09/2008 08:51

No, it would not have been a good idea.

Although, I do think it's a good writer or actor name, for some reason.

castille · 26/09/2008 08:50

Don't like Wilfred at all.

But given your surname, the nickname Wilf is entirely reasonable.

tortoiseshell · 26/09/2008 08:48

Wilfred Wilks has a certain 'cute' factor, but every time he applied for a job, the people receiving the CV would be 'look at this name, it is comedy'.

Michael is a great name. Ds2 is Michael, and I LOVE it. He often gets Mikey or MikeyMike, or sometimes even Mickey....

If it cheers you up, in the bible, Michael was the chief of ALL the archangels, and he was the one who expelled Lucifer from heaven. Whereas Wilfred..well don't think there was an archangel Wilfie!

ninedragons · 26/09/2008 08:43

It does remind me of the "welease Woderwick" scene from the Life of Brian.

Michael is great. Every baby goes out into the world with a secret name he or she would have been given had its mummy's pregnancy hormones prevailed. My own sober white Anglo-Saxon protestant mother nearly got stuck with Eurydice.

SlurZoom · 26/09/2008 08:36

Looks will change.

Michael fits very nicely with Poppy and Emily.
It is a classic name.

(I do like Wilf though)

LazyLinePainterJane · 26/09/2008 08:33

You could still nickname him Wilfie though, a bit Fred Flintoff....

NL3 · 26/09/2008 08:23

It sounds like a character from Dr Seuss, sorry. I think you made the right decision, Michael is a great name

AbbeyA · 26/09/2008 08:10

Wilfred is a horrible name whatever the surname. I should think he will be very pleased that he escaped and has the lovely name Michael.

turquoise · 26/09/2008 07:47

He won't thank you for Wilfred or Wilfie when he's a teenager.

minkersmum · 26/09/2008 06:30

i'd def use wilfie as a nn for him.

We call our kids Minker and Tootle all the time!

When i ask DD her name she says 'tootle'
