one syllable first name and surname

my mum is annoying me - we have a one syllable surname so she's saying we have to have baby's name as two or more syllables - I get what she's saying but two of our top boys' names are one syllable as is one of our top girls' names and to be honest so long as it doesn't sound really weird, does it matter that much?? (will be having middle name, both of which are 3 syllable)

I just argued it's not like you get called your full name out loud very often and surely it's more preferable to choose names you like?

AIBU?

Oh, sorry OP, I was going to post that my husband feels exactly the same way about first names to go with our single syllable surname. I went with it for DS1 who's called Patrick but think we might break it for the one I'm expecting.

Yes, but Max Brown is like Ben Ten isn't it ? Sounds really cool. Shame about the desire to be Tommy Zoom though... Not sure that sounds quite as good

MadameCastafiore · 23/09/2008 13:27

Oh and my first and second name are 1 syllable and I feckin hate it soooo bloody boring.

MadameCastafiore · 23/09/2008 13:26

Ha ha - he wants to be called Tommy Zoom though - that is a cool name - or Ben Ten!

Madame Castafiore - I love your DS's name! Sounds like a superhero in one of those kids cartoon type programmes !

You use your full name every time you introduce yourself to someone and every time you are introduced by someone else. I spend a lot of time introducing myself (in a professional sense) and although I don't have two single syllable names, I have a first name that ends in a vowel and a surname that starts with one and I have carefully annunciate (sp?) my name every time I say it! My point is that it is important how your name sounds when you say it in full.

Also, my Mum has a single syllable first name and surname and she doesn't like it.

I don't think YABU, but I do see where your Mum is coming from.

No it doesn't matte that much. Go with what you like. I can think of quite a few famous names that are one syllable for first and surname. I don't think it matters at the end of the day.

MadameCastafiore · 23/09/2008 13:19

Both of my DCs have 1 syllable surnames (different as been married twice) DDs 1st name is 3 syllables as I think as a little girl it needs softening but DS is Max Brown and it is butch and macho.

So I would go with 1 syllable boys names but softer longer girls names.

Personally I chose a name with more than 1 syllable to go with our surname for that reason

RedHead81 · 23/09/2008 13:17

u go with what you like - its your baby - your choice
