I love this name. Anne Rice (author of 'Interview with a vamp' wrote a book about a modern witch (good 1), called Rowan and she was definately a she.

My middle name is Rowan and I am definitely a girl. I used to be embarassed about it and never mentioned it if I could help it, then I quite liked having an unusual name but by that time Rowan Atkinson had become really well known and every time I mention it now I get, 'Isn't that a boy's name?' - 'Er, obviously not...' I think a lot of boys have a girl's name .

If you don't mind that then I would say I have actually grown to like my name (if not to love). Having said that I have had a lot of comments from people who think it is a lovely name and with more unusual names you are always going to get people who make it obvious they don't like it just because they are expecting to hear one of the more popular names.

My brother went out with a Rowan and a Rowena at school (not at the same time though). They were both girls

Nice names I think!

MrsJohnCusack · 09/09/2008 08:24

that;s another reason why i'd quite like it as a middle name for theoretical 3rd child - DH lived in Mountain Ash

it's NOT the same name as Rowena though

Rowan - I love it! It's a beautiful name for a boy or girl. I don't usually like names used for both boys and girls on girls usually, e.g Robin/Robyn. But I love Rowan for a girl.

heymammy · 08/09/2008 18:12

Beautiful name for a girl imo but pronounced Row-en (to rhyme with cow)

pointydog · 08/09/2008 18:06

I did consider it

pointydog · 08/09/2008 18:06

It's strong and beautiful for a girl but wet and weedy for a boy.

pointydog · 08/09/2008 18:03

No matter how many times you post it, janitor, you are wrong

pointydog · 08/09/2008 18:02

love it for a girl. Not at all for a boy, though.

Fairly popular for girls in Scotland and I have never come across a male Scottish Rowan.

Promounced Row (to rhyme with cow) an.

I like Rowan for boy or girl. But pmsl at tmms!

ravenAK · 07/09/2008 23:19

Seeker - no, there were loads of Lawrence (& Nicholas) Marlow forebears & they decided to use the name despite having a dd. Cf 'The Player's Boy' & 'The Players & the Rebels'.

slapheadsrock · 07/09/2008 23:06

I love the name. And in this day and age, where it seems ANYTHING goes, who cares whether it's for a boy or a girl? As long as you both like it, then you tell people what your child is called.
For goodness sake, in a world of Tigers and Peaches and FifiTrixibelle's, at least it sounds normal, boy or girl!

seeker · 07/09/2008 23:03

I've always been puzzled by Lawrence. the mother was half French wasn't she? Is Lawrence a French girl's name?

FanjolinaJolly · 07/09/2008 23:02

Speaking from experience

It is lovely but

You may get jokes about comedians.
You will get lots of letters addressed to Mr.
It will be mis-spelt in 50% of your birtday cards - Roan, Roanne ,Rowanne,Ruanne etc etc.

ravenAK · 07/09/2008 23:01

If it's good enough for Antonia Forest...

Although her fictional Rowan Marlow did have a younger sister called Lawrence now I come to think of it.

I think it's gorgeous - didn't make it onto our list because dsil is Rowena.

Tommy · 07/09/2008 22:58

DH's cousin has a daughter called Rowan - I thought she was a boy for quite a long time (before I met her obviously) and had not heard of it for a girl but I think it's nice

seeker · 07/09/2008 22:57

Actually, it's not Cow-anne - it's more Cow-en

seeker · 07/09/2008 22:56

Rowan pronounced Cow-anne is how a lot of Scottish people say the name of the tree.

My dd would have been Rowan if my filthy, mean promise breaking dp hadn't backed out of a deal he made in 1975 when we were romantically discussing our possible future children's names on the West Sands in St Andrews. He was outrageous enough to suggest that he couldn't be expected to remember every conversation we have had over the previous 20 years.....

Reginaphilangy · 07/09/2008 22:55
