Any thoughts? An old lady name or cool again?

OH MY GOD NO!

milene · 03/09/2008 18:22

Actually, my name is Rachel I'd not thought that the meanings are the same - I guess one is Hebrew and the other Greek in origin?

The names Agnes and Rachel have the same meaning. Do you like Rachel?

milene · 03/09/2008 15:25

I think naming a child Agnes and then insisting people pronounce it the French way is even more pretentious - an I'm sure people would pronounce it the English way anyway!

Anais is french but not related to Annis apparantly.

The french version of Agnes is Agnes with an accent on the e so very similar and pronounced anyes iyswim.

hugatree · 03/09/2008 12:01

I honestly really love the name agnes, but because my grandma was called agnes and hated it, "Only bloomin' maids are called agnes or maiden aunts why could my mother not give me another name!" She was 72 when she said this so mmm..... best not call my wee one that then!

kitsmummy · 03/09/2008 11:45

Like Agnes but hate Aggie, just makes me think of that how clean is your house programme

milene · 03/09/2008 10:32

No, but Anais is French isn't it?

lulalullabye · 02/09/2008 09:24

Annis is very English, no French anywhere near !!

milene · 01/09/2008 22:53

I wouldn't want her to end up with Aggie as a nickname... I also love Annis, and Anais (but worry that giving a French name when we're not French is a bit pretentious?).

Dreadful!

noonki · 01/09/2008 21:34

horrible sorry

3andnomore · 01/09/2008 21:18

Please...don't do it to your dd....my next door neighbour (who is super lovely)hates her name and she is Agnes.....

Lilyloo · 01/09/2008 20:56

Quite like changing it slightly to anais or similar.
Think it will come back with Edie , Elsie etc.

norkmaiden · 01/09/2008 20:53

I like it.

Annis is pretty.

scotlass · 01/09/2008 20:53

whoops has been called Nan

scotlass · 01/09/2008 20:52

my mum is an Agnes but had been called nan for as long as I can remember.

My DD thinks granny's name is hilarious and does tease her calling her Senga. IMO I think it will make a return though and become quite cool, the model will help I think.

lubyluby · 01/09/2008 20:50

My dd is has Agnes for her middle name, she's named after my Nan ho died around the time dd was conceived.

My nan actually hated her name (Vera Agnes) but i quite like it and i love the meaning of it. My business is called Princess Lamb after the meaning.

ja9 · 01/09/2008 20:49

hate it. as someone said earlier, it sounds 'hard'.

DanJARMouse · 01/09/2008 20:46

My granny is an Agnes and she calls herself Nancy too.

I like them both, and Senga too.

If I was to have another DD I would give Agnes or Nancy as a middle name.

DH's gran is Elsie, another lovely name but SIL nabbed it for DN's middle name!

falcon · 01/09/2008 20:43

It's awful.

I really like Annis. That's lovely.

And I still harbour deep resentment towards the horrid little boy who wrote on Elizabeth's forehead.

AnnVan · 01/09/2008 13:17

When I was very little (so young I can't remember it myself) I named my favourite doll Agnes. My parents have no idea where I came across the name either, I can only have been about 3 when I named her. I still feel a lot of resentment towards the two boys who broke her

Ronaldinhio · 01/09/2008 13:07

I adore Agnes
