Thing is Scottish Mummy, names are interesting to talk about. I love thinking of names and wish I could have ten children just so I get to come up with lots of lovely names. I fully appreciate that people might not share my taste, and I don't mind. I think it's a little unreasonable to imagine that everyone is going to share my opinions to the letter. I really DON'T mind what other people call their kids, I mean that so sincerely. But above not minding, of course I still have OPINIONS, and everybody does. And that's ok. And a babyname forum is precisely where you might wish to express them. Supposing I had called my daughter Evadne, and someone started a thread saying it was a name that made them want to puke, or that it reminded them of a skin disease, or it was a cat's name (ie the sort of things that people do say on here) - I would just think - oh well, more fool them. I wouldn't think the poster was evil or spiteful or out to ridicule my life choices. I'd just think they had ridiculous different taste.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 26/08/2008 18:59

this is an odd thread

The thing about names is that you have to take it on the chin. You're not going to get everybody in the world loving your name choice.

I love my DD's name, other people dont - but I dont let it worry me, I still like it, and DD hasn't raised any objections yet so I'm still happy

scottishmummy · 26/08/2008 18:57

but it would obviously hurt if someone made derisory comments about your baby name.no brainer that it's insensitive and needless

so if folk dont care - dont start name calling threads

LadyThompson · 26/08/2008 18:51

Yes, it's difficult isn't it? You see, I don't give a monkey's, really, what people think of my name or the names I will be giving DD; but I think some people actually seem to get hurt if names they have chosen get criticised, when really it doesn't matter a jot. Anyway, I post in this topic less frequently that I used to!

scottishmummy · 26/08/2008 18:45

ok thanks for clarifying.names threads inevitably usually upset.names are so personal to parents

LadyThompson · 26/08/2008 18:30

No, SM, I started a names thread a few weeks ago, inviting people to speculate about which names would go wildly out of fashion in a few years - I used the word 'rancid' which I meant completely flippantly, but which I think some people were upset by. So I rein in my opinions or try to use blander language now, which isn't as enjoyable, but people seem to take things so personally that I decided I'd better. I don't look down on ANYONE for the names they choose, which I was certainly accused of; but we all have opinions. To me, it doesn't matter what others think of a name and it's just a bit of light relief to chat about them...but it clearly does to many people...so I am wary, and therefore not coming up with my own list of 'terrible' names. Not after some of the abuse I received last time!

princessglitter · 26/08/2008 18:26

Thomas
Jack
Toby
Oscar
Jacob

Lily
Lydia
Isabella
Matilda
Georgia

Such dreadful names. How could a loving parent inflict such horrors on their baby?

scottishmummy · 26/08/2008 18:15

apologies.i misunderstood reading here that you started the names thread?didnt understand

LadyThompson · 26/08/2008 18:11

Hey! I am just me, thanks, and have never posted as anyone else in the few months I have been on here

scottishmummy · 26/08/2008 18:06

periselene em so are also ladyThompson?if so why the subterfuge why not just post as LadyT.

LadyThompson · 26/08/2008 17:54

Yes, I did, oh raindrops with the memory of an elephant - back in the far off days of about 6 weeks ago when I never imagined for a second anyone would get the hump about my idle speculations (they're only names ffs). But it caused such a kerfuffle I am actually incredibly wary about expressing ANY opinion without a million provisoes. Hence not posting any names in this thread. Basically, I enjoy talking about names, but I don't really care what other people call their kids. Obviously I have OPINIONS, but they only seem to cause distress and humpage, so er....

stroppyknickers · 26/08/2008 17:53

Ok, my ds is the first name on Peri's list. Bit annoyed it's on there as too trendy? Was hoping to be unique in my poncetastic choice.

raindropsonroses · 26/08/2008 17:47

ladyt

raindropsonroses · 26/08/2008 17:46

but mrst - you're the one who started the rancid names thread

BeckyMcG · 26/08/2008 16:19

I liked Otis (am actually TTC so all theoretical) but husband who works in construction said "that's the name of an elevator manufacturer" so that put pay to that.
What about Finn (Finley?) although want to go with my dad's name for middle name which is Edgar so worried Finn Edgar sounds like 'vinegar'.
I like Pippa for a girl??
Enjoying the banter ladies! assisting my boring day at work pass by :-)

Time was, I'd have gamely posted a list of five girl and boy names I dislike, not thinking for one moment anyone who'd chosen that name for their DC would give an elephant's toenail for what I, a stranger, thought, and that it was all just harmless chewing the fat.

I'm old and wise now.

Treeny, you are on thin ice my friend...the hordes bearing flaming torches will be massing as we speak...

I don't particularly like the really popular names either. I don't hate the names per se or think snooty thoughts about people who use them, just would prefer my kids to be the only ones in their class with a certain name. But people NEVER think you feel like that, they feel you have taken a potshot at their entire lives...

WheresTheAuPair · 26/08/2008 15:35

lol i'm always emailing name suggestion to my DH and today got fed up of the 99% veto rate so copied and pasted a load of these to him...

he nearly fell off his chair at Marmaduke

wonder what he'll make of Tarquin!

Treeny · 26/08/2008 14:31

I can't stand names that become really popular for a short time - I don't know why anyone would want to call their child the same name as every other child in their area/generation. I give you:

Ellie
Chloe
Millie
Ruby

Joshua
Jacob
Oliver
Jack

raindropsonroses · 26/08/2008 14:22

I don't understand why some people would be offended. The opinions are on the names only and should not be taken personally.
People certainly don't hold back giving negative opinions about names on other threads, whether asked for or not.
My dd's name has been mentioned too - I may yet flounce

Lola
Danielle
Tilly
Courtney
Madison

Lewis
Jake
Alfie
Jayden
Riley

Aero · 26/08/2008 14:11

Well, amoongst the names I like least and would never have used are:

Mildred
Millicent (like Millie though)
Maureen (but love Maura)
June
Marjorie

Giles
Lindsay (I know a male one)
Norbert
Gerard
Norris

...but names are indeed a matter of opinion and what I like others will hate and vice versa. No-one should take it personally.
