Final decision - play safe or not?

Right, i'm almost due and have finally nailed DH down to 2 name choices. I've done so many polls and i'm not saying there are names which i might prefer (i still like sebastian) but DH is just sooooooo picky that i'm left with 2 options.

Thomas Arthur/Thomas Isaac

Toby Alexander

I know a lot of people that i've told has said Thomas is a bit dull and that might niggle me a bit - DS1 is oliver and there are already 2 in his pre-school. However, i've already had millions of 'toby jug', 'my dog is called toby' etc etc so i'd have to live with that.

Any thoughts?

Also, if your surname is Hunt, steer WELL clear of Isaac as a middle name

thumbwitch · 25/08/2008 00:19

what's wrong with Thomas Alexander? or has that been covered and discarded elsewhere?

Not keen on Toby OR Tobias (in fact, especially Tobias as I know some PITA mum of one who gets v. arsey if anyone shortens it to Toby)

Clary · 25/08/2008 00:15

Thomas is very popular, as is Oliver, no two ways about it.

But if it's a name you like then go with it. Just be prepared for Thomas S (or whatever) for his school career.

I like Thomas Arthur. What about Arthur Thomas (Arthur not nearly so popular, tho coming back (cf David Cameron))?

jellybrains · 23/08/2008 00:04

Thomas Isaac that is really cute. Thomas is lovely that was my choice for a boy.

1dilemma · 22/08/2008 23:49

Thomas is nice (Isaac as second name) but if you're in SW London 2 out of every 3 boys are called Thomas!

jellybeans · 22/08/2008 23:40

Thomas Isaac

JayneF · 22/08/2008 23:07

Toby or not Toby, that is the question.

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 22/08/2008 22:53

I prefer Thomas. To me, Toby sounds like a little boy's name - great until he's 10 but not after that.

naturalblonde · 22/08/2008 22:47

I prefer Thomas Isaac

Tortington · 22/08/2008 22:45

somersetmum · 22/08/2008 22:43

Or Tobias instead of Toby and never shorten it.

MannyMoeAndJack · 22/08/2008 22:32

Prefer Toby

Thomas is just too, er, trainy

ShinyPinkShoes · 22/08/2008 21:08

I prefer Toby

There are lots of Thomas' around!

MrsMattie · 22/08/2008 21:05

Both very, very safe, so take your pick!

TwoWindyDays · 22/08/2008 12:32

Thomas Arthur/Thomas Isaac

I prefer Thomas Arthur

hw2004 · 22/08/2008 12:22

Moondog - not ashamed to say i'm probably classed as very 'middle england' so would probably fit in well.

G2B - aaargh - don't give me more choices - my diminishing brain can only cope with 2 at a time -

Puppymonkey - leaving dh and going for Seb is an option given the mood swings i'm prone to these days - hee hee

Or a Luke or Lucas, or Michael, or Mikey, Elliot, Lewis, Evan, etc etc

greenday · 22/08/2008 10:59

I like both - my DH is Thomas or Tom so I'm already biased. Like Toby too, Love the whole Toby Alexander combination too - go with your gut instincts. You'll definitely know it when you see his face - for all you know, he may look like a Sebastian!

Swedes · 22/08/2008 10:47

Toby is an estate agent's name. You know the type? From a good family (well orf) but never going to add up to much in his own right. Luckily Toby's father had contacts at Strutt and Parker.

moondog · 22/08/2008 10:43

They are both awful.
One is dull, t'other is middle England and a bit wet.

G2B · 22/08/2008 10:39

For some reason I don't like the name Thomas and I don't know why. It reminds me of a squeezy toy 'thom-assss, thom-asssssss' or Thomas the Tank Engine. But I've met many nice Thomas's in my time and it is cute for a little kid. And I suppose it's classic.

Prefer Toby though.

PuppyMonkey · 22/08/2008 10:36

My dd is named after my friend's cat. Never caused us any bother!

Cappuccino · 22/08/2008 10:34

safe is booooorrrriinnnnggg

'my dog is called toby' oh fgs

I know someone whose partner and her eldest son have the same name as her childhood dog

it's a perfectly nice name and they are perfectly lovely people

G2B · 22/08/2008 10:34

Toby

PuppyMonkey · 22/08/2008 10:34

Leave your husband and go for sebastian. You have no option...
