Eve-lyn, Ever-lyn or is it something else? Which one is the most commonly used?

I’ve read a few times here about the alleged ‘male’ and ‘female’ pronunciations, but I don’t think it’s necessarily true.

Evelyn Waugh and his first wife had the same first name and the same pronunciation: Eve-lin. Their friends apparently used to call them He-Evelyn and She-Evelyn to distinguish.

Those who say Eve-lyn do you mean Eveh-lyn or Eev-lyn Confused.

Because when I read Eve-lyn I think E-v-e-lyn (the e being pronounced like e for elephant).

I pronounce it Evah-lin. Everyone I know with this name has pronounced it like this.

Don't pick it if you're liable to be irritated by different pronunciations.

Eh-veh-lin or Ehv-lin (the h isn't an addition, it's to show it's a soft e rather than an ee sound).

Hmm, I would probably pronounce it Ev lin but would check.

It could be annoying- everyone spells my name wrong which isn't as big a deal but still drives me insane.

Evelyn is a very pretty name though Smile

I know lots of Evelyn's my mum's age (so mid 50's) in Scotland and they are all pronounced EV LIN

I always thought that when used for a man it is pronounce Ev-lin. Don't know if that's right,I've never met one.

It's Eve-lyn for my daughter, I am from Scotland so maybe that had an influence but that is how it's written.

  • ev-ah-lyn / Eva-lyn - there's no 'a' in the middle
  • Ever-lyn / Ev-er-lyn - there's no 'r' either!
  • Ev-eh-lyn - eh? where did the 'h' come from?

I think it's a beautiful name but she's going to be correcting people for the rest of her life I fear. Hmm
