Eve-lyn, Ever-lyn or is it something else? Which one is the most commonly used?

Thanks

Ever lyn? Never heard it pronounced like that

chezmk1988 · 05/05/2018 13:47

Always thought it was ever-lyn. Never heard it said Eve-lyn

RavenWings · 05/05/2018 08:25

Ev-lin or ev-eh-lin for me.

EleanorHooverbelt · 05/05/2018 08:23

Hevelyn and Shevelyn? That's so funny. I didn't know that, @Boudicas

BoudicasBoudoir · 05/05/2018 08:12

I’ve read a few times here about the alleged ‘male’ and ‘female’ pronunciations, but I don’t think it’s necessarily true.

Evelyn Waugh and his first wife had the same first name and the same pronunciation: Eve-lin. Their friends apparently used to call them He-Evelyn and She-Evelyn to distinguish.

EleanorHooverbelt · 05/05/2018 07:55

Tis a bag of worms as a name, I can tell you that!

It certainly seems to be! Something to think about when choosing a name maybe - all the different ways it could be pronounced Shock

Pickles77 · 04/12/2012 20:46

I'm a Eve-lyn it's DDs middle name as well as mine but I'll let DD decide what she prefers

littlestgirlguide · 04/12/2012 20:41

Sorry, didn't read the last few posts-

Eev-lyn

littlestgirlguide · 04/12/2012 20:40

My DD's name and I love it :-)

Eve-lyn

Dogsmom · 04/12/2012 15:41

Another vote for Ev-lin here, Eev-lin is too similar to 'evening'

tammytoby · 04/12/2012 14:50

Those who say Eve-lyn do you mean Eveh-lyn or Eev-lyn Confused.

Because when I read Eve-lyn I think E-v-e-lyn (the e being pronounced like e for elephant).

squoosh · 04/12/2012 14:41

I pronounce it Evah-lin. Everyone I know with this name has pronounced it like this.

Don't pick it if you're liable to be irritated by different pronunciations.

tammytoby · 04/12/2012 14:28

I pronounce Evelin as it is written: Eh-veh-lin.

GrrrArghZzzzYaayforall8nights · 04/12/2012 14:06

Eh-veh-lin or Ehv-lin (the h isn't an addition, it's to show it's a soft e rather than an ee sound).

BornInACrossFireHurricane · 04/12/2012 14:01

Hmm, I would probably pronounce it Ev lin but would check.

It could be annoying- everyone spells my name wrong which isn't as big a deal but still drives me insane.

Evelyn is a very pretty name though Smile

MrsBungleBear · 04/12/2012 13:56

I know lots of Evelyn's my mum's age (so mid 50's) in Scotland and they are all pronounced EV LIN

LoveYouForeverMyBaby · 04/12/2012 13:53

I would say ev-er-lyn

Alisvolatpropiis · 04/12/2012 13:02

Same as Trinity.

I always thought that when used for a man it is pronounce Ev-lin. Don't know if that's right,I've never met one.

lovemybabyboy · 04/12/2012 12:51

I say Ev-eh-lyn, I am Irish.

mcobby · 04/12/2012 11:49

It's Eve-lyn for my daughter, I am from Scotland so maybe that had an influence but that is how it's written.

  • ev-ah-lyn / Eva-lyn - there's no 'a' in the middle
  • Ever-lyn / Ev-er-lyn - there's no 'r' either!
  • Ev-eh-lyn - eh? where did the 'h' come from?

I think it's a beautiful name but she's going to be correcting people for the rest of her life I fear. Hmm
