Astrid? My chum thinks it's chavvy.

admittedly, he's in the minority (of one, as it happens), but he's being a bit strident about it.
Would have been DS' name, and now is back on the table.
It's the only girl's name i really like, apart from evangeline, but don't like the Evie-shortening.
Opinions welcome.

Does this help? Not very chavvy I would say. The good ship Waynetta is a small rowing boat moored off Southend.

you know what - I am 19 wks pregnant with a little girl after two boys and she is going to be called Astrid

so yes, I love it!

Oh gawd, that's brilliant...I had an ex (and nearly had a baby with him) who wanted to name it Hereward (boy) or something else very vikingish for a girl...can't remember, Oh that's going to bug me now...it was bad, really bad...

If I start a thread like that though, I have to be careful not to let DH see.

For DC1 he wanted Thor or Odin if it was a boy. You can't name a child after a god! Well OK Mohammed and Jesus are quite popular but you know what I mean.

A girl called Astrid in the UK is one thing. Little Thor marching around the playground is quite another. And imagine if he turned out to be a sensitive type!

Apologies to anyone who has just got Thor & Odin off to bed...

No it's not chavvy at all over here...very very unusual, makes me think of Astrid Lindgren who wrote the 'Lotta' books (and Pippi Longstocking?)

I had it on my list for years

sadly never had a girl!

i think it's because these names sound more adult that i'm drawn to them

How can a name be humourless? Or with humour? Unless you name your kids Groucho, Harpo, Groucho and Zeppo?

Also slighty shirty as if and when I get knocked up again, Astrid was at the top of the list along with Greta. I already have an Ingrid. Pah!

Maybe better head off to a thread entitled "loving scandinavian/germanic names for no apparent reason"!!!

It's deffo not chavvy, quite the opposite I would say.

Astrid's a beautiful name. It's on my shortlist for DC3.

and seeing as she's going to be an adult for longer than a little girl...? Poppys, bloody Rubys, Daisies, Mollies, Lulus, Pixies and the like all grow up eventually ...

I like it. Cute, quirky and strong all at once.

When I was pg with DD my DH vetoed any name that conjured up a saucy image of a mountain milk-maid in a mini-dirndl with immensely long golden legs and immensely long golden hair in plaits. (Think Cameron Diaz in Charlie's Angels Full Throttle). So that ruled out Heidi, Inge, Astrid etc etc.

This is weird - it would have been DS's name, if he'd been a girl, and we pretty much narrowed down our very shortlist of girls names (literally, there's about 3 on it, we're really struggling!) down to Astrid last night.

I'm still not 100%, probably 99.9%. But it's definitely not chavvy!!!

Oh, I think this is a great name. Would be a contender for no 3. Wasn't there a 70s terrorist called Astrid? Astrid Proll? Cool.
