admittedly, he's in the minority (of one, as it happens), but he's being a bit strident about it.
Would have been DS' name, and now is back on the table.
It's the only girl's name i really like, apart from evangeline, but don't like the Evie-shortening.
Opinions welcome.

This is my daughter's name (we are Danish), and we get loads of compliments on it. I like the associations w/ A Lindgren and A Gilberto as well. It's also a royal name in Scandinavia so very traditional/old norse as well as hip at the moment (and not at all chavvy). You can use the nickname 'Asta' if you feel Astrid is too heavy.

Nightstar · 14/01/2011 13:34

Ingrid is nicer, couldnt you change it to that?

PlanetLizard · 13/01/2011 23:18

Really dislike it. It sounds harsh and is so similar to "get rid".

recklesspixie · 13/01/2011 23:13

my absolute favourite name for years but Dh hates it -reminds him of Asterix?! :-( have 7 months to get round him!!

Laura2011 · 13/01/2011 22:22

Astrid is not chavy at all! I love the name and think its pretty

TotorosOcarina · 12/01/2011 16:26

LOVE it!

montmartre · 12/01/2011 16:24

I LOVE Astrid. Elegant, non-girly, other-worldly - what isn't there to love? My first daughter is due next week and she's going to be Astrid. Not chavvy AT ALL!

Just thinking about what will be a 'cool' name when our babies grow up. IMO it'll be the Brenda's, the 'Norma's' and the 'Marion's' (think our mother's best mates) who will be super-cool.

BabyTalk13 · 30/11/2008 00:54

My nans called Brenda

skidoodle · 29/11/2008 07:53

I guess this baby may already be called Astrid by now.

I think Astrid is a really beautiful name.

But then I also like the name Brenda

It's a family name in my family and I know lots of gorgeous, awesome Brendas, weird to see people sniggering at it like it's a joke name that nobody would use.

BabyTalk13 · 29/11/2008 00:17

'funny to constantly' ...to correct the nearly asleep on the comp written message above!!!

BabyTalk13 · 29/11/2008 00:15

Ha Frazzle my friends called Astrid and has very blonde hair, blue eyes and is very stunning... also thin with big boobs
Her parents were Dutch.
People do find it fuuny to contantly call her Astroid which she hates apart from tht everyone including her loves the name. Asti for short.

PerkinWarbeck · 27/11/2008 13:15

It's a beautiful name.

Would have gladly called DD Astrid but DH is too conservative (note small c!)

Nancy66 · 27/11/2008 13:12

definitely not chavvy just not very nice - very harsh and Germanic sounding

TheShipsCat · 27/11/2008 13:04

dd2 is astrid.. - I think its too foreign to be chavvy

tiggerlovestobounce · 25/08/2008 18:39

I like it, I dont think it is chavvy.

snarky · 25/08/2008 18:37

god I hate that chavvy label

Astrid is a lovely name, makes me think of stars

periselene · 25/08/2008 18:36

Could equally be ridiculously slender, willowy, pale, blonde .... a name with scope!

frazzledoldbag34 · 25/08/2008 18:21

not chavvy.
but maybe a bit butch? (am also thinking swedish masseur when I say this)

also you'd need to be very blonde, beautiful and blue-eyed to live up to the name.
Other than that, go for it!

msdemeanor · 25/08/2008 18:15

I like it. And not chavvy! Is he confused with Heidi? (which is a perfectly nice name, but Kerry Katona named her daughter Heidi)

periselene · 25/08/2008 18:12

as for being chavvy ... on what planet is Astrid a chavvy name?????
Nonsense!

periselene · 25/08/2008 18:11

I think I could get to like it.

AnybodyHomeMcFly · 24/08/2008 23:06

Astrid is our top girls name and I am preg with DC2. I love it, as it sounds a bit like it means stars but doesn't actually and is a good strong girl's name - like OPs I am not a fan of soft/ flowery names for girls.

My only worry is our surname begins with so it could mean a DD called Astrid E - is that a bit too teasable??
