Whats the general consensus on these names, and which do you think sounds better?

don't like either - used to know a bloke called edwin - said he had a nightmare right through school and longed to be called dave or steve.....

only in adulthood did he finally escape the teasing....

Actually Edgar is my DS middle name, but didnt want to say that straight away as wanted to gage genuine reaction to the names. When i tell people his name they always ask why i chose it and i always wonder do they think its very strange? To me its a normal name as both Edwin and Edgar are that names that have had continual use through the family.

I like Edwin and Edgar and my brother is called Edmund (Ned) so I'm no help, I'm afraid!

throckenholt · 06/08/2008 10:26

not keen on either - but Edwin in preference.

Loriycs · 06/08/2008 10:25

Thanks, pointydog i really like it spelt Edwyn, Hadnt thought of that.

Edgar if I had to choose.

MrsSprat · 05/08/2008 20:21

What Elkat said. So not quite the lone voice.

Hulababy · 05/08/2008 20:20

I much prefer Edward

moondog · 05/08/2008 20:19

Edwin is great. I've knownsome lovely Edwins.
Edgar was name of horrid boy in Famous Five books and therefore a no no.

noddyholder · 05/08/2008 20:18

malicious and sneaky how very dare you!

Elkat · 05/08/2008 19:23

Ah, well think I must be a lone voice who really like the name Edwin. Think it is nice but without the over popularity of Edward. Given that the child is likely to be an Ed or Ted or whatever anyway... I really like Edwin (but had lots of cool reactions when we considered it with DD2).

bessmum · 05/08/2008 18:51

Edmund

BellaBear · 05/08/2008 18:46

Love Edgar, reminds me of Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City where the twins are named Anna and Edgar.

I've taught a lovely (and very cool!) Edwin, as well. Stands out without being silly.

flack · 05/08/2008 18:43

I love Edgar, fantastic name imho. Don't warm to Edwin (thinking Edwina Currie).

pointydog · 05/08/2008 18:21

Are you joking?? Edwin, if a choice is necessary. You could say it's after Edwyn Collins to add some cool. But it's a bit girly.

Anna8888 · 05/08/2008 18:15

Edward is lovely.

Edgar is pretentious and pretty but bearable.

Edmund is pretentious and ugly.

Edwin is silly.

norkmaiden · 05/08/2008 18:14

Edwin

(or Edward)

TwoBigNorks · 05/08/2008 18:13

Edward

EffiePerine · 05/08/2008 15:55

I like Edwin. Also Edmund. Not Edgar for some reason.

frazzledoldbag34 · 05/08/2008 15:54

Edmund - nice

or Edward is nice too.

Edgar sounds malicous and sneaky to me (sorry, not sure why!)
Edwin sounds a bit wimpy. Again sorry can't tell you why, it just does.

Eddie then?

Cies · 05/08/2008 15:05

Out of the two I prefer Edwin, although I think Edward and Edmund are nicer.

FranSanDisco · 05/08/2008 14:26

I prefer Edwin of the two. My old Head was called Edgar XXXXX so reminds me of a strict bald bloke

Ellbell · 05/08/2008 14:17

I like Edmund or Edward more than these two. Of the two, I think I prefer Edwin, but that might be because my mum had a cousin called Edgar but everyone pronounced it Egger.

noddyholder · 05/08/2008 14:16

its my middle name so i would say that!
