Mission Impossible- find me a boy's name conforming to (my) strict criteria...

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find a name (or names) for my son (due January, plenty of time yet). This is no ordinary namequest- there are strict criteria to adhere to...

  • no Top 50 names( I do not wish my child to be known as xxxx G. throughout his schooldays, I would prefer he was the only one in the school with his name)

  • cannot begin with 'G' or 'J' (surname issues) or 'R' (DH pronunciation issues)

  • no biblical names (I am a fervent atheist, DH is buddhist)

  • Unusual, but not wacky

We are m/c academic types, I am not an earth mother, nor a lentil-weaver (sadly); we are also quite removed from popular culture. I am therefore never likely to name my child 'Celestin' or 'Zaphod'...

...or Guybrush.

Or Neo.

This thread will self destruct in 30 days (judging by the number of name threads at present),
TIA

Ellbell · 04/08/2008 14:43

I like Columb for a boy (I'm Cornish) and dh said that was 'too architectural'. No good for you, anyway, as it's a saint's name.

Can you do French Rs? Like, say, Marcel or André or Laurent?

EffiePerine · 04/08/2008 14:42

I understand the problem, I have a lisp and many names are out because of that (Cicely for instance). It was apparantly seen as sexy and endearing in the middle ages though

Ellbell rofl at 'spark pluggy'- my DH thinks like that too!

And thank you for the 'r's comment- DH will be mighty pleased! Especially as his first language is french,a nd he can barely pronounce, et alone roll 'r's poor thing.

CSWS -yes, probably will avoid 'A' names, but at the moment we are desperate to even have a shortlist
(do you know our surname?)

EffiePerine · 04/08/2008 14:35

I rather like Vivian and DH likes Evelyn and Jocelyn (for boys)

giddly · 04/08/2008 14:35

Teilo (Welsh)
Gethin
Arden
Petroc
Hayden (maybe too common?)
Any of those take your fancy?

Ellbell · 04/08/2008 14:33

Luigi/Louis/Lewis?

Harvey and Vivian are family names in my family (but in danger of dying out through lack of use) and were the names of two of my mum's brothers who died in a fire when they were about 6 and 8 (before my mum was born). Vivian says 'Young Ones' to me, though!

stretchmarkqueen · 04/08/2008 14:33

Cuthbert
Martyn
Damien
Leonard
David
Stewart
Nigel

CantSleepWontSleep · 04/08/2008 14:32

Is your surname not the same as your email surname? I'm now thinking not!

CantSleepWontSleep · 04/08/2008 14:31

Toby

Hugo

snice · 04/08/2008 14:31

OK just read OP properly -scrub Guy

snice · 04/08/2008 14:31

You've prob had most of these already but:
Fraser
Hector
Dominic
Hugh
Guy
Monty
Edward(surprisingly uncommon)

EffiePerine · 04/08/2008 14:30

Gregor I like a lot

Gustave (PLEASE someone call their child Gustave or Gustavus as I love it so much)

TigerFeet · 04/08/2008 14:30

Leo?

EffiePerine · 04/08/2008 14:29

Ambrose
Jerome

(neither biblical but early church)

Aubrey

quite a lot of r's though

Ellbell · 04/08/2008 14:28

Gregory? (Assorted popes, though, and maybe too many Rs)

Lucas? (I am determined to get someone to call their ds this, since my dh rejected it as 'too spark-pluggy')

Corbin? (But it has an R in)

Surely, Benoit means 'blessed' and therefore fails on religious grounds.

Max?

I like Corrado, which I know has Rs in, but is shortened to Dino, which doesn't. And I'm told that in Italy not being able to say your Rs properly makes you sound posh rather than silly. (Think Fwancesco da Mosta...)

MadameCheese · 04/08/2008 14:28

Ethan?

Katisha · 04/08/2008 14:28

Alexander

CantSleepWontSleep · 04/08/2008 14:28

Are you not bothered about avoiding 'A' names for post issue btw?
