What is the most unusual name you've come across recently?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

What name is it derelict? I'm intrigued now

derelicte · 20/08/2008 16:41

I met a boy called Niven the other day, which I thought was lovely. But then my DS has an unusual name (which has been mentioned on here!), so I guess I'm out of step with the MN consensus

There was someone at my old job, never met him but used to see it on emails, called Rusty Armour! Never found out if it was his real name or just a nickname though.

Also there was something in the papers a few years back about a couple in some remote corner of Italy (one of the islands I think) who had called their daughter Salmonella Bacteria!! Apparently they had read it somewhere, had no idea what it meant but thought it sounded nice... gulp....

SueMunch · 20/08/2008 16:28

Oh forgot, know of a couple in my area who named her girls after their cars. No Joke.

Mercedes (fair enough, quite an established name) and Tigra !!!

Vauxhall Tigra!

That will make sense in 20 years

Squarebear1973 · 20/08/2008 16:09

My mum wanted to call me Summer-Sky but probably spelt Summa-skye as this was 1973 & she was an 18 year old hippy! The registrar took one look at her & said "Your daughter will probably hate you when she grows up", so I was registered Sarah!! Would probably have liked it when I was mid-teens or at Uni, but probably not if I'd grown up with it. THANK YOU MUM!

catweazle · 20/08/2008 15:56

Loveday is a traditional Cornish name IIRC

moonstone1201 · 20/08/2008 15:53

I know of a baby girl whose middle name is 'Jeebus' after Homer Simpson's mispronunciation of Jesus.

what donnie said
GUFFAW!

a lot of parents do seem to be vulgar attention seeking short-sighted gobbins and no mistake.

FTMum · 20/08/2008 13:58

i worked with a gertrude about 2 years ago.
oh and i met a baby called maude last year.

i suppose traditional names are unusual now.

Blu · 20/08/2008 13:47

Apparantly NO children have been registered as GERTRUDE in the last few years - so that would be one of the most unusual you could call your child no.

If you really wanted 'unusual' that badly.

scunnered · 20/08/2008 13:45

Twins. One was called Gianni and the other twin called Versace.

Makes some of the "odd" names I wanted when pg seem quite normal! DH wouldn't let me use Aurora.

I know some oddly named children, but I love the names that people give themselves. I used to work with a few girls from China, they were students over here and they had their Chinese name and an English, which was either a translation or something they'd named themselves, so I worked with a Cherry, Butterful and Linda

I used to have to email a girl overseas at work called Princess (when I was pg I did mention this name to him as potential girl name, he didn't answer me!)

My boss at work is from South Africa and she says that in Africa the people often have their Afrian name and another name which are words they have heard in English, hence the Beloved, Loved, Gifted etc (which I think are lovely)

GorgonsGin · 20/08/2008 13:09

I know of a Tansy Honey-Bee. I worked with her father and he blushed bright red telling me her name.

Alabama
Zebedee

And I went to school with a girl called Javre (pronounced, pseudo French style, Shav-ray)

Best ever name was my PA's when I worked in Greece - she went by the very Bond Girl name of Aphrodite Lovely. Aphrodite is a really common name there and she married an American man, Mr Lovely.
