This name thing is getting ridiculous. Can anyone suggest any nice WELSH names?

Baby due next month and we're still no further on than we were 8 months ago. Am getting very stressed that this poor child could be nameless for weeks!

My name is Scandinavian as is DS1's but our surname is Welsh. Having not got very far with agreeing on more Scandinavian names, (maybe Magnus for a boy, but I'm less sure than DH) I'm wondering if we should go for something Welsh. (DS's middle name is Welsh and we're debating moving there so thought it might be a plan.)

We are considering Arianwen for a girl. (Well, I am, DH not so much. We just can't agree this time at all!)

Any suggestions? Please?!

We have a Huw, an Angharad, 2 Davids and a Gareth in the family also.

Slubberdegullion · 13/07/2008 19:03

My dds have welsh middle names.

We have a Carys and an Anwen, and I wish now that they were their first names.

I think there are lots of lovely Welsh girls names - Ffion I think is a bit overused, but what about Eleri, Eilir, of course Seren as suggested before . . .
For boys, Owain is lovely and perfectly understandable outside Wales, also Macsen, and plenty more.

Youcanthaveeverything · 13/07/2008 18:50

None of those were too 'bizarrely' WElsh for others IYSWIM.

Welsh, but don't make people go 'What??'

SoupDragon · 13/07/2008 18:49

Don't go for Seren. The only one I know is a contrary, stubborn little mare.

Youcanthaveeverything · 13/07/2008 18:49

We considered Aneurin, good link to Nye Bevan also.

I also LOVE Huw for a boy, but couldn't use it as one in the family.

For a girl we thought about either:

Delyth

Dilys (my favourite, LOVE this for a little girl)

or Gwynth

In the end we just used welsh middle names Huw for DS1 and Glynne for DS2. Both have family links.

bohemianbint · 13/07/2008 18:47

Ah, the chap that started the NHS, he was Aneurin...

OH I might be wrong, I always get it wrong. maybe more uh-nahy-ruh ?

beanieb · 13/07/2008 18:42

An-EYE-rin

bohemianbint · 13/07/2008 18:40

James - cheers for the fab list, will get DH to cast an eye over it and see if we can agree on anything.

Sorry for the constant "how do you pronounce that" questions, but Aneurin? Not come across that before, someone tell me!

Nye is on our list for DS2 (currently 4 days late!)

beanieb · 13/07/2008 17:40

Hatrick - I feel exactly the same. I love Aneurin and the shorter Nye, am seriously considering it if I have a baby boy.

Eira is - AY-Rah but there's an emphasis on the R, like a rolling.

Blandmum · 13/07/2008 16:38

My great Gran was a Gwenllian (which I wouldn't wish on a new born, but I thought I'd throw it into the pot)

My father was Idwal

bohemianbint · 13/07/2008 16:35

Enfys is lovely. Eira is good too, but how is it pronounced? (Guess the kid would get that a lot!)

Mabli is unfortunately a name a lot of people in Wales use for their Dog!

I am Welsh (well, I wasn't born here but considermyself Welsh) and think it would be nice to give my children a Welsh middle name but I find a lot of the female names very harsh sounding.

Gwawr for example.
Gwawr is Dawn
Enfys is Rainbow
Eira is Snow
Blodwen is White flowers

The short version of Ceridwen is spelt Ceri not Cery. And Ceridwen means blessed poetry while Ceri is thought to derive from the Welsh word for Love.

What about Gwen or Gwyneth

Haf (Summer)
Tesni
Meinir
Rhian
Lowri
Siwan
Llinos (though you would need to know how to say your 'LL')
Luned
?

I've never heard of an Iolo! How do you pronounce that?

Is Ioan like "Yowan"?

Very tempted re Seren...but I do distantly know someone who has one...

What do you think the etiquette is when you know people who have kids with the names you like? Is it weird to nick them?

Unbelievably, I found out that my #2 choice for a boy (Sennen) is also my brother's #1 choice. He then got really pissy and told me I couldn't use it! (He hasn't even got a girlfriend, let alone kids.) I guess if it wasn't so unusual it wouldn't be such a problem...

Don't do Iolo.Everyone is called Iolo thee days.
