If you do, can you tell me how old they are, whether their name gets shortened at all, and if so, what to?

Please note that I'm not interested in hearing from people who don't like these names, as dh and I are just about quite capable of picking for ourselves .

I knew a Duncan at school who's name was shortened to Dunkie to tease him - it meant a condom then, no idea whether it does anymore - haven't heard anyone use it that way for years so may have been 80s playground slang).

Dominic is on my list of possible names and I was thinking you could also shorten it to Nic, which I like

seeker · 09/07/2008 14:46

I know a 12 year old Lawrence, who is never aabbreviated, a 4 year old Duncan, ditto and two 12 year old Dominics - one Dominic and one Dom.

gauly · 09/07/2008 14:43

I know a couple of adult Duncans, one always called Duncan and the other with the nickname Drunken. I think however that that version is somewhat self-inflicted ...

My cousin's DS1 is Dominic, he's Domo - this is kind of an 'official' shortening, they always call him this, rather than an occasional pet name.

My friend Dominic (mid 30s) is almost exclusively Dominic, although his wife calls him Dom.

Duncan - I know one in his 40s who isn't shortened, and a friend's husband who is exclusively Dunk.

My parents wanted to call my little brother Duncan, but I told them 'Duncan is a dragon' and vetoed it (aged 4).

I know one adult Barnaby, exclusively called Barn.

dizzydixies · 08/07/2008 20:45

I've only even known one Laurence at school and he was Laurie

my mate Domonic is normally known as Dom

Duncans - none sorry, even thought I live in Scotland lol

all equally nice imo although I would still put elliot in first place sorry !!!

It looks like they might be here GE. I think you need to register to download them though, which is odd as I definitely didn't!

I have a spreadsheet that I downloaded from somewhere with the top 1000 (well, actually 999) names on. Someone linked to it on here a while back, but I can't remember exactly where it was. Will try and have a think/search.

greenelizabeth · 08/07/2008 19:54

I don't know any Dominics, but I know a Lawrence, grown up, always Lawrence, and a couple of Lorcans (gaelic for Lawrence), and I know one Duncan, just Duncan.

Just to sway you back a bit to Lawrence..... I know a Duncan (he is 50 now) and his nickname was always Dink

CantSleepWontSleep · 08/07/2008 18:30

Tut tut Califrau - we'll have none of that negativity on this thread thank you!

AFAIK both Lawrence and Laurence are equally correct spellings for Christian names. Last year there were 88 Lawrences and 80 Laurences.

I know a one-year-old Duncan. Afaik, he's just Duncan, no diminutives. I have to say, I love Laurence, with a 'u' not a 'w'. Laurence Olivier was called Larry, I believe.

ikod · 08/07/2008 18:16

I know a Duncan - he gets called Dunc the spunk or Spunky

zippitippitoes · 08/07/2008 18:11

loz and lozzer are of course never going to appeal to prospective mums and dads as shortened names lol

bramblebooks · 08/07/2008 18:09

My ds Lawrence gets shortened to Loz (ugh!) by his friends, and Lol by me.

Our Dominic(8) has always been Domi to us but has become Dom to his friends this past year or so.

Doozie · 08/07/2008 16:38

When I was twelve I had a crush on a boy called Duncan, who became spunky Dunky, but after he made a move on my bestfriend he quickly became Duncan Donut.

Dominics I've come across have been Dom or Dommy. Laurence - Laurie.

Scotia · 08/07/2008 15:54

I know a 3yo Duncan, and about three adult Duncans too. Only the oldest (in his 60s) has it shortened to Dunc.

Barnaby - I know a 21yo with this name and he's been know as Barney since he was a baby.

Aso know a teenage Dominic, who doesn'thave his name shortened.

Wags · 08/07/2008 15:46

I am sure when I looked up the spellings of Lawrence in a baby book the spelling Laurence is more commonly used as a christian name, whereas Lawrence was originally used as a surname. As I said, we took the spelling of our Lawrence from the Super Hero he was named after . It rarely seems to get misspelt. Some people ask if its a 'u' or 'w' including Dallaglio who was signing a mini England shirt for him. He immediately asked how Lawrence was spelt, so maybe its something irritating to him too!

Ags · 08/07/2008 14:48

I have a Dominic aged 4 whose middle name is Laurence! His name has not been shortened so far except by one person who referred to him as Dommo (quickly nipped in the bud by my Mum!). A very good friend used to lengthen his name to Dominicky noo noo when he was a baby but thankfully she has since emigrated to Australia and it did not stick!

My Dad is Laurence and has been known as Lar or Larry all his life except inexplicably, by his best friend who always calls him Jack!

No experience of Duncan I'm afraid.

TheFallenMadonna · 08/07/2008 14:44

I know a Larry (Laurence) and lots of Doms.
