Is Nelson terrible?

We’ve incidentally named our kids with the final consonant /n/ sound and are considering this name for a third. I love that it follows the pattern and it’s an honor name. My husband also likes it. That being said… is it awful? We’re no strangers to “old” names for our kids, so that’s not the issue. I’m just wondering about public perception. Is it classic, or “nerdy?”

To 11-14 year olds, I think so. My 14 year old Nelson has only just learned about Mandela. Perhaps Mandela might just pip the racer to the post now...They've never been taught about Horatio, he's only aware of him due to trips to London and Trafalgar square and independent learning, he doesn't feature in the school syllabus, I never learned about Horatio at school either to be honest. They do know about sport and famous sports personalities. The Simpsons is largely irrelevant to them. 🙂

I did it to my first born and he's very happy, he has told me he loves his name! To be honest it just blends in with all the other surnames as firstnames that end in 'son'. Hardly anyone of his generation has any stand out cultural references to famous people or characters called Nelson, I'd say the racing driver is the best known, followed by the Simpsons, then Mandela and finally Horatio. 😃

My Nelson born in 2012 barely gets Simpsons jokes/references. Mostly just the occasional smirk from his brother if on the very rare occasion it pops up on TV or YouTube. Even I, born in the 80's hardly ever think of the Simpsons now, I was shocked to stumble across an episode the other day!

I have friends with a son called Nelson.
He’s very cool, nice lad, clever. All positive for me.

ETA: He’s white, of European /S American heritage.

Objectively, it’s not a terrible name.

I'd assume a Nelson was black with African heritage... I could see it being quite a handsome strong name on a black boy/ man. It would feel odd on a different ethnicity though I think. I know we had Admiral Nelson in the Napoleonic era but I don't think he's inspiring many baby boys these days.

I work with a Nelson - his family are from Zimbabwe and he’s a very tall/broad black guy who really owns his name. He’s a really cool guy. (My MIL’s neighbour has a cat called Nelson and he’s also a cool cat!)
