Leo for baby boy?

Love it, don’t worry about popularity. Number 3 is still only about 1 in 100 baby boys given that name. It’s a really handsome name.

The first one is an opinion. You can disagree with it, but that neither makes it 'true' nor 'untrue'. There are many popular names I like, and many I don't. For the ones I don't, clearly many people do think them 'lovely' to have chosen them. It's a highly subjective term. No statement of "that's a lovely name" can be true or untrue, as it's just someone's opinion. If it's a popular name, the opinion that it's 'lovely' is obviously a popular opinion, currently, whether we personally agree with it or not.

I agree there could be huge pockets of children with a certain name in some areas and hardly any in another but, nationally, popularity is diluted massively compared to what it was. That is true, it's reflected in the stats. What I then said, based on that, was there's every chance their Leo could be the only one in the class ('could', I didn't say he would or wouldn't be, I was just speaking generally based on the fact there are far less boys called Leo born now compared to boys called Jack in the 90s). That can be neither true nor untrue, as it's just hypothetical. We have no idea where OP lives and whether there will be lots of Leos or not (or whether they'll even use the name!).

I agree with the point you are making, I just found your "that's not really true" response to me odd, as I wasn't presenting the potential situation I was outlining as 'true', just what may or may not happen 🤷🏻‍♀️

My DD is 9 months old and Leo is definitely the most popular boys’ name we have come across in classes etc- there were 3 in my Baby Sensory class for example (SE based). However, it’s a lovely name so popular for a reason, and as PPs have said, these things are always a bit of a lottery anyway, so I wouldn’t necessarily let that put you off OP! 🙂

For a period in time, until it starts to sound dated.

Not really, it just shows lots of parents chose it.

There's every chance he won't though, as popular names are much less frequently used than they were years back, so the stats are very 'diluted' now.
It doesn't matter how 'diluted' the names are, they might not be diluted in your area.

Not actually come across any Leos in our local area (nursery, school etc). The most popular boys' name by far seems to be Louis/Louie - we know at least 5. Loads of Theos as well.

Leo is a decent choice, if you like it I'd go for it. Popular names aren't as popular as they once were because there's much more name variety.

It's such a great name. Even if there are others, he will be YOUR Leo and that makes it special

I really don't get the love for Leo. It's a boring name. There are so many gorgeous names out there to choose from.

I’m a bit biased though as my son has a name that will probably end up being shortened to Leo. My husband isn’t British so the longer version is from his heritage but we wanted to make sure there was an easy UK version. I’ve come across one other Leo his age at baby groups.

I’ve never met a Leo! It seems to be not very popular in my area.

@xXMummyTo6Xx , I like some names but don't seem to like many of the currently popular ones. Most of them were fine when I only knew one but most of them seem a tired now.

lovely name but very very common where I am. Leo is the only name repeated in my ds’ class. There are loads about and they all get called Leo M, Leo T, Leo S etc

There's one Leo in my son's school, apparently not a nice kid either, but i wouldn't dictate a child's name based on what other kids with the same name are like.

My 24yo DS is Léo (we're in France) and he likes his name (as do I obviously 😂). It wasn't hugely popular back then (often a shortening of Leonard) but it seems there are Leos everywhere now (which isn't necessarily a bad thing).

What's 'not really true'? I made lots of points so I'm not sure exactly which one you're referring to 🤷🏻‍♀️

Everyone will have different personal experiences when it comes to name popularity. I'm only speaking generally, as who knows whether the OP will come across loads of Leos where they are? It's impossible to tell.

@BoleynMemories13 , that's not really true, otherwise it would have always been popular. Name popularity tends to be regional, so the chances of it also appealing to parents in the same area.

I went to a tiny primary school where there were many duplicated names, some of them quite unusual ones, yet there weren't duplications or even one of some of the nationally popular names.

My 4 year old grandson is called Leo, I thought it was a great choice that my daughter and son-in-law chose, it really suits him too.

yes exactly this is what im trying to say, like its popular because its a commonly used name.. i don't mind the name Leo though.. i have a Lenny which isn't a commonly used name for example 😊

I know several who are primary school age (different schools though), so can quite believe it's so high in the charts now. Especially as it appeals internationally as well.

It's a lovely name. If you love it, use it. Don't let thoughts of 'what if he meets lots of other Leos?' put you off. It's all ifs buts and maybes. If there are lots of other Leos when he gets to school, that just shows what a lovely name it is. There's every chance he won't though, as popular names are much less frequently used than they were years back, so the stats are very 'diluted' now. The top names generally get just a few thousand registrations a year now (Jack was getting 10,000+ back in the 90s!). Spread across the whole country, there's every chance your Leo could be the only one in his class. Name duplications are much rarer at school now than when we were kids.

I like it. I knew 3 before it became popular - different ages. At least two of them had parents who needed a name that worked in two different languages.

If you don't mind the popularity use it. Check that it goes with the surname and For example, Leo Owen/Leo O might not work.
