Name regret

I spent a long time looking but dad vetoed sooo many of my name suggestions and in the end it got so close to the deadline that I ended up going with one he wanted.
Now I feel unsure and that it doesn’t suit him so don’t like telling people. I’ve tried diminutives but not really helping. I don’t really want it occupying my thoughts but can’t quite shake it. I’m prob overthinking it right? Perhaps I thought about it too much before so it’s hard to let go of other options.
(not really an option to change it as he doesn’t like talking about it)

Change it? You can legally change the name on the birth certificate up to 12 months for a small fee, you can change it after 12 months provided you registered it somewhere official in the new name during the first twelve months i.e a bank statement or the doctors surgery, a passport (deedpoll works for this) etc. I took almost a year to decide on one of my children's names (it was during covid so late registrations were allowed), I found having the extra time to decide was amazing, I was confident in my choice at that point and we just called her by her nickname until then which she still goes by now. Just change it if you don't like it. Names are very important (up to a point) as they are the badge your child wears for life. Unless your DP really loves the name or it is a family name I think it is a little bit unreasonable for him to object if you have in mind a name you like a lot more. The other option is to include names in the middle that you love, at least one, so that you can call him by his middle name. Lots of people go by their middle name, and again perhaps document the middle name somewhere as his first name, then when you have firmly established that as his day to day name your DP will see no real reason to object to reordering it legally on his birth certificate, which isn't necessary at all but makes it slightly easier in terms of bureaucracy.

How are you feeling in yourself OP?

gettingold55555 · 29/07/2026 22:17

I’ve been in a similar situation. What’s the name?

DrapedInVelvet · 26/07/2026 21:38

How old is the baby?
Are you in a relationship with the father?
Is he on the birth certificate? If he is then you can’t change the name so you will just need to get used to the name you have called the baby. Can you think of a nickname that you do like?

Whats the name and maybe we can help you love it?

Nice attempt at pure nosiness. Op your dp sounds like a bit of a prick, unless all your names were ridiculous. How old is the baby

If young try out other name for a week and choose one you both love. Ditch the name you dislike enough not to use.

She said the dad won't discuss it. Honestly what's with people not actually reading the OP before responding 🙄

Is the baby here yet? Can you give him an affectionate nn instead? Buddy for example.

The baby is here, she made that clear in the OP
