Thoughts on Edith?

I have an Edith - there are a couple of others in her (all girls secondary) school so it’s distinctive but not unusual. Did when she was small occasionally get comments about it being old fashioned, but just as many that love it. Obviously I love it, and mercifully she does too!

To your parents it probably seems uncool old fashioned in the way that Linda or Karen would now - middle aged rather than vintage.

I detest Edith. They are my grans friends (she is long dead and would be over 100 now) and I relate the name with old cantankerous women

Edie is lovely but Edith is hideous. And of course, popular on MN.

Love it. I know one Edith (doesn’t go by Edie) and it suits her down to the ground. Her sister has an equally quaint ‘old lady’ name.

I know a teenage Edith. I admit I (privately) thought it was a surprising choice when she was born but it has really grown on me. She’s a pretty cool teenager and really suits her name.

Never ever tell family the name in advance, they think you are inviting their input and opinion and all you really wanted them to say was “how lovely”.

I have more than one friend who has name regrets for their child because their MIL put them off their original choice. I am absolutely determined that if my DC have children I will say “how lovely” to whatever they choose to name my future grandchildren.

I really dislike the name Edith although i know it's popular now. To my generation it just sounds a name for an unattractive older lady.
But it doesn't really matter what I and your in laws think. If you and your husband like ir use it

I think Edith is awful. It’s quite an ugly name.

I think ewwwww (as in yuck) but it’s a stretch imo.

It's lovely. Ignore them .

It’s not a name with a pleasing sound, but if you love it use it, Edie is more pleasant.
I definitely wouldn’t use Virginia, as a middle name, as it a sure fire way to ensure a teenage years of ridicule.

Edith is beautiful and much nicer than Edie

I don’t mind Edith, one of my nana’s close friends was called Edie which I prefer. Love Abigail.

Edith is lovely, I recently taught one, and Edie is great as well. Abigail is a bit old hat now I think. Other old names I love are Nancy, Gloria, Agnes and Barbara!

Why on earth are you discussing names with any one else!! Mad!!
If you'll use Edie, just name that. Don't get giving longer names that are never used.

It is fine, it’s not the prettiest name but it does sound strong. Edie is similar to Evie which is super popular so maybe your mum is just out of touch with the name fashion.

Im 57 and had a great Aunt Edith, who was in her 80's when I was born.. Lovely lovely woman, I've never met another one since!

I don't have much to do with babies & very young children these days, but I haven't heard it being used or on name threads here .though reading the thread seems like I'm
an outlier!

i can well see a cute baby/toddler making it 'cute' & it also being a good name as a child/teen/adult.

there are names j just can't imagine giving a child, I think it's largely depending on your generation, which names seem like a good revival & which definitely don't!.

if my Mum/MIL had had an issue with a name I'd have given that consideration IF it was a personal bad association, but if it's just a general 'don't like it' it would have been 'tough'.

definitely go for the 'long' version of whatever you choose, it gives her choices.

Abigail is ok, but I think it's both dated & over used! (Sorry anyone with young Abigail's)

Both my grandmothers were named Edith, but neither of them chose to go by that name, coincidentally.
I used to think that was because it was a hideous name, but it’s growing on me now, surprisingly.

@RegalDiamondMonster , I feel the same only I quite like Martha, Dorothy and Elizabeth but dislike Seth, Beth, Bethan, Meredith, Lilith, Dorothea, Athena, Thea and Theo.

I think it might depend on where in the name the TH is, and what the other letters are. The TH in Dorothy and Dorothea seem different to me.

It's just a personal thing but i don't like 'th' names much, like Seth, Beth, Meredith, Elspeth, Martha. Edith and Judith are probably two of the better ones. Weirdly I don't mind Bethan or Dorothea.

Anyway that's just a matter of taste, Edith is fine, normal, similar vibe to Florence, Martha etc. Abigail is more dated probably due to large numbers in 90s.

I love love love it. We wanted it for ds2 if he had been a girl. My dmum hated it as she associated it with an aged aunt but we would have gone with it anyway. Please have a little Edith for me…I ended up with 2 massive rugby playing boys so never got to use it!
