Winifred

My mother's name.
Not to many of those about
Except I do know a toddler called winnie I think it's lovely.
My son is a teen and he knows a sandra the same age which I was surprised at.
I think Agnes now sounds quite trendy

Edna
Dulcie
Gertrude
Jean
Sheena

I know a 7 yo Dulcie! Not a fan of the name though

CurlewKate · 23/04/2026 09:27

And Victoria Coren Mitchell’s dd is called Barbara.

CurlewKate · 23/04/2026 09:26

Beryl
Farrah.

Although I am ready to hear that lots of posters have 5 of each in their child’s nursery!

And I also have to say that my mother was laughed out of calling me Emily because it was such an awful old fashioned name that would never ever come back!

My friend called his daughter Lettice and I pronounced it Let - tice and was corrected by him, apparently it is pronounced same as the vegetable.

I think I’d say Leh-teech-eh hoping it had an Italian pronunciation 😁 I really can’t imagine inflicting the name Lettice (sounding like the salad vegetable) on to my child. 😕

I do think Agnes / Aggie is an ugly name but seen a few girls called by Spanish version Inés which I think is pretty

I didn’t know that was the Spanish version. Spanish seems to have a knack of making names sound nice, including my own, which sounds far nicer in Spanish than English.

Rubyeagle · 23/04/2026 09:18

I think I’m wrong about how to pronounce Lettice! I like how I pronounce it, but it’s obviously wrong.

Agnes to me has always been a very old lady name. A neighbour who seemed 150 when I was a child was called Agnes so I’ve always associated it with being very old. Her sister was called Mary, but I didn’t see it in the same way for some reason. I’ve got more used to people using it now, seems quite a middle class choice today.

I can’t see Janet or Janice making a come back.

I found out I have a gg grandmother called Cinderella, I didn't know it was ever used outside the fairy tale.

I know a 12yo Ursula.

Always popular in the Irish Catholic community in 60s/70s as it’s a saints name.

I like Lettice but people can’t pronounce it correctly.

How should it be pronounced?

I know a 12yo Ursula.

I went through a stage in my late teens/early 20s of loving the name because I was obsessed with D H Lawrences books, The Rainbow and Women in Love. Had I had a baby girl then I’d probably have called her Ursula 🤦‍♀️😯

Htcunya · 23/04/2026 09:05

I hope those posting these lists of names that will never come back live to be eighty . They'll see how wrong they were!

I'm shocked there are some children with the name Agnes.
It's the name of an older relative of mine. She has always disliked her name & also the nickname Aggie. She was named after an Aunt. The rest of us felt sorry for her and were also relieved, we didnt have that name.

Exactly what I came here to say. Unfortunately, Fanny has had her day..:

Fanny being short for Frances which I think is a lovely name, but sadly Fanny has other conotations.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 23/04/2026 08:45

My middle daughter was nearly Agnes and she's 34 now! A few years ago I would have taken bets on Ada never coming back and yet - here it is on every second girl. I think Brenda might be a hard sell, but given my track record, who knows?

Reportingfromwherever · 23/04/2026 08:43

I’m a Nicola Louise and I’ve hated my names forever. There are just so many of us that it’s not even outing to post this 😂 I was desperate to be called something more exotic when I was a child….. I really wanted to be called Liesl as I loved the Sound of music!

I knew an Agnes, she didn't like her name so she spelt it backwards and became Senga!

Sounds like a reception class in 1968 - add in Tonia, Sonya, AnneMarie, Anette, Angela and Michelle.

I’m not sure Sonya and Tonia belong in that list. They’ve never really been popular in the UK, have they?
