Having commenting on lots of others choices, I'd be interested in views on mine.

Now that I am finally up the duff, I don't feel quite so embarrassed thinking about names.

Girls:

Violet
Tabitha
Nancy (it's not actually my real name)
Annie
Elspeth
Edie

Boys:

Paddy (not Patrick)
Finn
Johnny
Raphael

Feel free to say if too poncey, too chavvy etc....I'm very thick skinned.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
poppy34 · 19/06/2008 17:06

sorry re Annie -agree with poster who suggested annabel/anna shortened

poppy34 · 19/06/2008 17:04

Girls:

Violet -lovely
Tabitha - for some reason its more a pets name to me but that is prob my prejudice
Nancy (it's not actually my real name) - I like it -quite old fashioned and
Annie - bit girly as an actual name pr
Elspeth - fave of lot I think
Edie - nice

Boys:

Paddy (not Patrick)-nice but inevitable questions re irish connections
Finn -like it
Johnny - quite nice when you're a kid but not sure if john/jonathan might be better if you want a "serious
Raphael -quite good but always slightly worried about names for boys that veer from teh simple given their propensity to be little shits playful with each other re stuff like that

VictorianSqualor · 19/06/2008 16:58

Girls:

Violet - A bit too staid for me, but pretty all the same
Tabitha - cute, reminds me of a cat though
Nancy (it's not actually my real name) - love it, love constance with nancy as a nn
Annie- get your gun.... needs to be Ann(e)/Anna/Annabel, shortened to Annie IMO
Elspeth - love it, use it as a nn for DD at times
Edie - mcredie, no

Boys:

Paddy (not Patrick) - no.
Finn - quite a lot of them around, i'd fnd a longer name and shorten it
Johnny -DP's name, not sure everyone suits 'johnny' though, so would yuse Jonathan and shorten it
Raphael - teenage mutant hero turtles

dizzydixies · 19/06/2008 16:50

I like Jonny Finn and Tabitha. DH will not let me have Tabitha Grrr!

TotalChaos · 19/06/2008 16:28

Girls; not keen on Tabitha, I love Violet, rest are fine.

Boys; names are fine. If you're not Irish you may get lots of comments on Paddy though. I love Raphael.

constancereader · 19/06/2008 16:25

Like them all except Paddy (which I would go for if it was short for Patrick ).
Tabitha is my .girls name dh wont let me use, I love it

Scuff · 19/06/2008 16:23

I like Violet and Nancy.

Johnny is OK.

katie3677 · 19/06/2008 16:23

Not too keen on any of the girls names, but my next DS is going to be Finn, if I can convince DH. I love it, makes me think of gorgeous looking surfer types, no idea why!

Sidge · 19/06/2008 16:22

None of them really grab me to be honest.

I love Anna, rather than Annie.

I love Jonathan as a full name, nickname Jonny.

TheFallenMadonna · 19/06/2008 16:22

Ooh yes. I like Edith.

Not Esme.

MummyAnnabella · 19/06/2008 16:13

love patrick as opposed to paddy
love violet

dont like finn - my uncle called his cow finn and when asked why he said "because he wasn't fat!!" cant ever contemplate that name now!!

MaryAnnSingleton · 19/06/2008 16:10

I know of a boy whose name is Raphael,pronounced Ray-fel...which I like

fruitstick · 19/06/2008 16:08

Edith is a lovely name (instead of Edie) as is Elspeth.
Don't like Tabitha (sounds like she'll have a lisp)
Annie and Nancy obviously have good show tunes potential if you can live with people singing Tomorrow or I'd Do Anything every 5 minutes
Violet has Roald Dahl connotations which I can't get past!

As for the boys, I like Paddy but Finn is too common (although Finbar is a great name). Johnny is OK but Raphael is not good. He'll never live up to it.

Lizzylou · 19/06/2008 16:06

Finn/Raphael from the boys list
Elspeth/Violet from the girls.

PuppyMonkey · 19/06/2008 16:04

Paddy yes.

Esme not Edie

TheFallenMadonna · 19/06/2008 16:03

Violet - no
Tabitha - no
Nancy (it's not actually my real name) - still no
Annie - yes
Elspeth - yes
Edie - s'alright

Boys:

Paddy (not Patrick) - no (do like Patrick though)
Finn - s'alright
Johnny - fine as diminutive to John.
Raphael - no

TigerFeet · 19/06/2008 16:00

I luuuuurrve Elspeth. I know for a fact that my dh would never countenance it

Finn is lovely for a boy

Nancy66 · 19/06/2008 15:59

Thanks ladies - useful feedback.

I'm a writer and my OH is in film industry so perhaps we ARE poncey enough to carry off Raphael !!

However the child is likely to be very blonde and fair (as we both are) so it's prob too Latin a name.

SoMuchToBits · 19/06/2008 15:58

I really like raphael but none of the others.

MaryAnnSingleton · 19/06/2008 15:57

I love Violet and Nancy and Elspeth (name of my much loved great aunt), Johnny and Raphael and Paddy
I always find Annie a bit eeew

thelittlestbadger · 19/06/2008 15:56

Raphael is a lovely name BUT i know at least 4 in my area - all aged under 1. The mums were really upset when they found out. I would also go for Patrick rather than Paddy and shorten it just to give the child the option later in life.
