Having commenting on lots of others choices, I'd be interested in views on mine.

Now that I am finally up the duff, I don't feel quite so embarrassed thinking about names.

Girls:

Violet
Tabitha
Nancy (it's not actually my real name)
Annie
Elspeth
Edie

Boys:

Paddy (not Patrick)
Finn
Johnny
Raphael

Feel free to say if too poncey, too chavvy etc....I'm very thick skinned.

Mammina · 19/06/2008 21:00

Girls:

Violet - like it
Tabitha - sorry, don't like it, makes me think of a cat or Bewitched
Nancy (it's not actually my real name) - liked it until 'I'll do anything'
Annie - nice
Elspeth - not a fan sorry
Edie - LOVE LOVE LOVE this. If I hadn't been set on a welsh name this is what I would have chosen for DD1

Boys:

Paddy (not Patrick) - like it but be prepared that people will assume he's a Patrick anyway
Finn - have always liked this. Friend used Fintan as middle name recently and I love that even more
Johnny - nice enough but doesn't grab me
Raphael - it's a nice name but way too posh for me but you might not mind that

Anyway, would go with Edie or Finn from your list

DD2 is Meabh(trad spelling) depends how Irish you are especially with O'Connell. We were going to go with Ruadhri for a boy.Try www.dublinuncovered.net/irishnames.htmlfor Oirish names. Love Finn and Esme . Good luck

AnybodyHomeMcFly · 19/06/2008 20:39

If you're both fair then Finn is perfect for a boy as it means fair warrior. I love that name.

And I would choose Nancy or Elspeth out of your list. Violet makes me think of Violet Beauregard from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Tabitha is bit too posh for my taste.

Twelvelegs · 19/06/2008 20:37

Maeve is nice, Mabel better.

janeite · 19/06/2008 20:37

Violet, Edie = lovely.
Annie = nice but not v exciting

Tabitha - I really don't like this.

Not keen on the boys' names, sorry.

Now I DO like Maeve and did ponder this years ago for dd1, but ultimately was put off by the Mavis connotations! Esme is gorgeous.

Twelvelegs · 19/06/2008 20:36

Violet and Rapheal for me, others are a little too common where I live esp. Finn and Edie

Hulababy · 19/06/2008 20:35

I prefer Edith to just Edie, for BC purposes.

Heated · 19/06/2008 20:34

I love all of them (except Violet). Really prefer the grown-up version of names though e.g Patrick-Paddy, Edith-Edie

Hulababy · 19/06/2008 20:33

From OP list...

I like Annie and Finn best.

If you want Jonny - why not go for Jonathan, and then shorten it. Then he'd have a proper full name to use when older too. Prefer Jonathan to John.

Maeve makes me think of Mavis which makes me think of the old bird from Coronation Street.

Sparkletastic · 19/06/2008 20:30

Tabitha and Johnny are both excellent

Izzywhizzy · 19/06/2008 20:30

I love Patrick.

My cat's called Violet.

greenelizabeth · 19/06/2008 20:29

What about Maeve? Maeve O'Connell runs well.

I have not heard of the sur name O'Pray before. Is that Irish?

Aah - well with a surname starting in O you may also want to avoid Tabitha or any other a ending names. a-o is a little tricky to say.

Nancy66 · 19/06/2008 19:51

Thanks everyone - Esme is good suggestion will add that to list.

Our surname is O'Connell, so Paddy prob is a bit too Oirish.

Like all of those except Elspeth and Johnny.
Violet and Tabitha my faves.

pointydog · 19/06/2008 17:41

Girls:

Violet - no, swings to the side of twee
Tabitha - no, as above
Nancy (it's not actually my real name) - too on trend for me
Annie - like it
Elspeth - scottish wifey connotations for me
Edie - liek the sound of it, not sure about edith

Boys:

Paddy (not Patrick) - like patrick, not paddy
Finn - like it
Johnny - like it (the simplicity of them)
Raphael - oo no, very elaborate

LuLuBai · 19/06/2008 17:37

Violet - Hmmm - well I don't really like the colour or the taste or Parma Violets although the flower itself is pleasant enough. Wouldn't choose it personally.

Tabitha - Love it!

Nancy - It is appealing and there aren't too many around

Annie - Cute - quite 1950s vibe about it - And I have met plenty of grown women who can carry it off without compromising their gravitas

Elspeth - Euurgh (sorry)

Edie - Was my grandmother and she always hated it (and was resentful that she had no middlename to fall back on. But if you are French I think Edith is v. cool.

Boys:

Paddy (not Patrick) - Fine - Just put a full version on the BC - doesn't have to be Patrick - can be Podraig or some such other variation if you have an aversion to Patrick itself.

Finn - Love it!

Johnny - Again use a full name - John or Jonathan and abbreviate

Raphael - Brilliant name and I went to school with a very blond one who was known as Raff which I thought suited his scruffy, naughty charm

AbbeyA · 19/06/2008 17:31

Violet makes me thing of Violet Elizabeth Bott 'I'll thcream and thcream until I am thick'!
Patrick is nice but I wouldn't shorten.
I like Jonathan in full.
Annie is nice but I would give Anna as the proper name.
Not all boys could cope with Raphael!
Tabitha is a cat to me.
Hate Finn .
Nancy and Elspeth OK

TheBlonde · 19/06/2008 17:19

I like Nancy

JacobsPrincess · 19/06/2008 17:10

Don't like Tabitha (it's a cat name) of Violet (Violet Beauregarde - Charlie & the Choc. Fact.) but love the other girls names, especially Edie.
Don't like any of the boys names, sorry.
