Really struggling with boys names. My partner loves Woody and I’m trying to get on board. I think it’s cute but I don’t LOVE it yet..
How do people feel about it??

we don’t know the gender yet! 😁

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

And people will greet him by saying ‘Morning Woody’? It definitely means erection! Just because you haven’t heard of it doesn’t mean people won’t be laughing behind your/his back.

It’s the name of the main character from Toy Story, it sounds childish and American. It’s a no from me.

Or Woody Woodpecker or the bird in Peanuts. Definitely a cartoon character.

Lady1576 · 12/04/2026 07:58

Yes I think of the associations with Toy Story and erections too. But I also think of Woody Guthrie who was pretty cool. It sounds quite cute to me, yes a little twee but absolutely fine. I don‘t think other kids will tease him. I think that‘s really a relic of older times when everyone had more traditional names. I’m a teacher and now there are so many different names that children don‘t bat an eyelid at all.

Daisylove1 · 12/04/2026 07:51

There’s two in my daughter’s school- they don’t get any grief as far as I know.
it’s getting more popular so you should be fine

Ophir · 12/04/2026 07:46

Makes me think of Woody Guthrie.

I like it, don’t think it’s weird, perfectly ordinary name

loislovesstewie · 12/04/2026 07:44

Why are you asking for opinions if you only want people to agree with you?
FWIW, it's horrible. Perhaps call the next one Buzz, then Bo-Peep, then Slinky.

SirChenjins · 12/04/2026 07:43

How about Stiffy or Boner if you like erection-themed names?

It's not a name I'd pick, but your bubba your choice 😊

coronafiona · 12/04/2026 07:43

No adult man needs to be publically associated with wood 🍆

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 12/04/2026 07:43

Hate it.

I would go for Edward or Howard on the birth certificate and use Woody as a diminutive.

Wnsg · 12/04/2026 07:31

I have twin boys, now 14, one named Woody. I’ll be honest it was my husband’s choice and I really struggled with it in the beginning as I really wasn’t sure but as far as I know he has never been teased about his name and was often complimented on the name. I understand the worry about the references to Toy Story, erections etc but this really hasn’t affected him, but I do understand the reservations that some people have.

Ljzjta · 12/04/2026 07:25

My son has a boy in his class called Woody. I was sceptical at first but he’s really cute and tbh they call his Woods, Woody etc. I don’t see an issue with it and it’s no worse than other names people use.

Blueonblacktan · 12/04/2026 07:25

MaxiMoomins · 11/04/2026 23:40

Calm down dear.

I’m entitled to my opinion in the same way all the **s are 😏

Yeah, give him a name that means erection, teach him to call women bitches and to be so thin skinned that he asks for opinions and then hates on people who give him opinions. I’m sure he’ll grow up just fine.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 12/04/2026 07:20

Goes against the grain for me, but then if he turns out to be chip off the old block with bushy hair, you could stick with it. It can be worth branching out occasionally.

ThunderCatsHooo · 12/04/2026 07:17

Woody is a nickname for anyone with wood in their surname (woodman, woodward, woods etc), I can think of half a dozen woodys I've met over the years and none of them are called woody in real life. Give your child a proper name they can use professionally, they can have a daft nickname with their mates.

HyacinthsAndPeonies · 12/04/2026 07:16

So only comments that agree with you are constructive and the rest of us are double asterisks? Ok then.

I personally don't like nicknames as the given name. Fine as a cute diminutive of the given name whilst they're a baby/toddler, but nice for them to have a 'proper' name they can use once they're an adult/mature. I know three Woodys. One is in his 70s and it's a play on his surname, the other two are dogs.

My first thought was also that it's slang for an erection. I'm UK, 60s, and I've known this since I was a teen.

pambeesleyhalpert · 12/04/2026 07:14

I know someone called woodie wood. There’s a woody in my daughter’s class as well. I don’t like it it’s quite twee

I know a Woody. He is 11 and it suits him perfectly-he has surfer boy longer hair and is outdoorsy and sporty. He has never had any issues with his name as far as I’m aware.i like it.

He sounds similar to the woody I know!

My husbands best friends little boy is called woody and it’s adorable! He’s gorgeous

Marmalade71 · 12/04/2026 07:06

OP genuinely people aren’t being shits for pointing out that Woody means erection.
That is exactly the kind of advice people come here for. You’re only engaging with people who agree with you which again, slightly defeats the point.

I’ll make 2 v quick points:

It would be preferable if you found a name you both love - not persuading yourself to love the name your husband wants.

If Woody, consider a full name which gives options later but use Woody from birth so he views it as his name eg Edward, Woodrow. We did this with our boy - not these names but with a name that is very unpopular on here that we love, which is part of a longer, more traditional name which is on his birth certificate. 22 year old DS seems very happy with this.

GeneralPeter · 12/04/2026 06:58

you can be honest without being awful.

@MaxiMoomins Fucking hell, OP. Practice what you preach.

You agreed with the above but in your first three replies you’ve insulted MNers twice, and then go on to agree that it’s “a shallow, xenophobic cesspit.”

By contrast, I don’t see anyone here who has insulted you.

Most people here want names feedback to be unfiltered because otherwise what’s the point? If you ask for “thoughts”, that’s what people are going to think you are asking for.

Woody's fine, there's quite a few, including Fat Boy Slim and Zoe Balls son who is in his 20s

Important to remember that David Bowie named his son Zowie. Obviously you can-but should you?
