Thoughts on Delilah for a sister to Matilda?

I’m pregnant with my second girl, I already have a Matilda and love the name Delilah for this baby, but the more I research it the more I’m put off it 🙈 I wasn’t aware of the biblical reference until now even though I was brought up in a Christian household. What does everyone else think of this name?

It’s a bit of a stripper name. Sorry!

Delilah is a popular name, so clearly a lot of people are choosing it just for how it sounds and the vibe it gives.

I don't think it goes particularly well with Matilda, which I think of as a slightly Germanic name with a Victorian or Edwardian feel to it, which Delilah lacks.

PPs' suggestions of Eliza and Jemima are great imo.

Forgot to say not many people sing the tom jones song to her but she tells them she hates that song. I am not bothered about the biblical meaning.
When she was a baby we shortened it to Dee Dee or Lilee but now she doesnt like that and I dont like Lyla so just call her Delilah

BePoisedPlumUser · 17/04/2026 22:52

Both gorgeous names!

LifeAt4067 · 17/04/2026 22:49

I have an 11yr old Delilah, love the name, have only ever met 1 other Delilah. Matilda and Deliah are lovely x

NamingNoNames · 10/04/2026 20:13

IRL I say what a lovely name about any name.

WonderingAboutBabies · 10/04/2026 20:09

DD is Delilah and she gets so many compliments on her name. We mainly call her Lila day-to-day! I love Delilah with Matilda! Lila and Tilly 🥺

I’m always surprised that people use this name with both the ‘Biblical whore’ and Tom Jones references! Lots of great suggestions here. I love Jemima and Eliza for their similar sound. Daisy, Lily, Rose, Charlotte, Poppy and Grace all also work.

Matilda and Eliza or Matilda and Jemima sound lovely to me.

Listlostlast · 10/04/2026 19:56

Okay so I LOVE Delilah but why why why Delilah and hey there Delilah would put me off, and did, when I had my daughter! Also I really don’t like Lilah so didn’t want to risk it 😂
How about Della, or Adele/Adela for that matter? Tabitha is a nice suggestion too.

17caterpillars1mouse · 10/04/2026 19:54

Delilah is cute and becoming more mainstream. I wouldnt worry

I think it's lovely!

Tryanalogue · 10/04/2026 18:47

My my my!

NamingNoNames · 10/04/2026 18:42

Tilda and Lilah sound like brands you'd find in the rice aisle of the supermarket. Smile

WeatherChanged · 10/04/2026 18:13

They are both adorable names although I think I might find them a bit of a mouthful. I don’t mind nicknames and I haven’t felt the need to control my kids nicknames but you might end up with a Till and a Dell. Or a Tilly and a Delly. They are all cute though

I really cannot grasp the resurgence of this truly awful name! It's because of the popularity of Isla and Lily IMO.

Trends are funny - who'd have thought 30 years ago that Theodore would be in the top 10 now.

I suppose you might be right.

I don't like "D" names full stop but Delilah is just dreadful.

Tryagain26 · 10/04/2026 17:55

I'm surprised you haven't heard the story of Samson and Delilah. I wasn't brought up in a a Christian household and I knew about it
I'm not keen on it as as my first thoughts are Samson and Delilah and the Tom Jones song Why, Why, Why Delilah which is about violence against a woman called Delilah .
But I am of an age that means that song is very familiar to me. Younger people probably won't have that connection. So if you love it you should use it

curlyfriess · 10/04/2026 17:55

I love Matilda but really don't like Delilah. I much prefer Tabitha which i think goes well, Jessica too.

MayaPinion · 09/04/2026 20:50

How about Delia? Delilah is not only biblical but a Tom Jones song about the treacherous temptress.

It's a song about VAWG. She has what is presumably a consensual relationship then she's killed by a jealous man who then blames her for his violence.

DoloresDelEriba · 10/04/2026 17:40

That’s a lot of syllables for both of them. How long is your surname. Always worth saying both together as a test.
How about Lyra, Lyla, Lydia, Davina, Erica, Esme 🤗

I can understand wanting to name your child Matilda, which is a lovely name. But why, why, why, Delilah?

You beat me to it!

I really cannot grasp the resurgence of this truly awful name!

Matilda is lovely btw! Choose something else ladylike and classic ...

cloverblue · 10/04/2026 15:37

I love Delilah. Also Della

buttercupdaisyyellow · 10/04/2026 15:27

Indeed you can’t. I just wouldn’t let idiots who think they are funnier than they are put me off a name I liked.

Like I say, tedious people who think they are the first ones to make the joke.

I wonder if they approach people at bus stops to announce ‘you wait - two will come at once!’

Tedious people exist and there's not a lot you can do about it.
