Should I mention my concern about this twin name pairing?

Hey,

Looking for a little bit of advice, my DD is expecting twin girls, she has incidentally revealed their chosen names to me, and I’m a little worried that while individually the names are lovely, together they sound a bit “showgirl” or similar.
The names are Lola and Roxy. She lives in France but I can’t imagine the connotations are much better there. She didn’t tell me directly but she was on FaceTime showing me some things they’ve bought and there were a few personalised pieces with these names.

Should I mention it or just bite my tongue?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
nowayho · 12/03/2026 04:47

The names are fine. Don’t mention anything.

If she’s in France, doesn’t she have to pick a name off some sort of approved list?

Not since the 1990s! And I think it only used to apply of both parents were French.

Zanatdy · 12/03/2026 04:30

They are her babies, you had a chance at naming children, now its her choice. They may not be to your taste, but there is nothing wrong with the names.

there are several Roxy’s in my son’s primary school, and i can assure you they are all human!

I went to uni with a Roxy about 500 years ago.
Her given name was Roxanne.

Zennia · 12/03/2026 04:04

Lola is a very popular name nowadays. It was maybe unusual and associated with exotic dancers a few decades ago, but I doubt the current generation of young people will have that association.

I actually recently met a woman named Roxana "Roxie" - I just thought, "cool name!". Nothing negative came to mind.

CloversAreTrumps · 12/03/2026 02:49

Bite your tongue.
My DH told me when my daughter was a few months old that his Dad had told him he didn’t like her name.
It’s a very normal name.
We had already registered her birth so there was no changing it anyway.
She is 18 now and I still wonder why he said it - there was just no need.

Lola and Roxy are ok names for today's kids. Don't say anything

but wasn't there similar thread that also included "should I tell her" and "personalized baby stuff"

I've read this post before too. Same names. Maybe she was at the start of the pregnancy and now she's at the end and the op is trying to get more opinions ?

If not, then there's another set of twins called Roxy and Lola out there 🤣

Chlospanda · 12/03/2026 02:38

I know adult sisters called Lola and Roxie (they are early 20s), I think the names work fine together. I will say they are both pursuing creative careers, which I think makes the names work better as they do feel a bit “stage name”.

Fends · 12/03/2026 02:16

Another twin baby name thread with Lola and Roxy? Right

TurnipsAndParsnips · 12/03/2026 02:12

Roxana is a common name where I live

Lavenderandbrown · 12/03/2026 01:32

Well sure Roxy is from the musical Chicago and has always had a gangster girlfriend vibe and Lola from Barry Manilow’s copacabana…”her name was Lola she was a showgirl” but this is a theatrical reference to the names not a personalized reference and in time those names will only be associated with your two grands. They are pretty names very feminine and unique names for twins.

I quite like the names and I am a right snob 😂

however does your DD know that “ lolos” is slang for boobs in French?

Lolos and Lola are not the same.

Don't say anything. My mum doesn't especially like my name choices and when a friend if mine had a child, she said oh I live that name several times. It still hurts years later. I love the choices I made and you had your choices. Let her have yours and never tell her how you truly feel.

gingercat02 · 11/03/2026 23:10

Mind your own business!

RogueFemale · 11/03/2026 23:08

@Ellentelss Of course, you should say nothing. But I wouldn't be able to say nothing. Lola is tolerable, but Roxy is just awful.

Dollymylove · 11/03/2026 19:06

There's a few Lolas and Roxys around my area. Nothing wrong with those names. Although I prefer Roxanne rather than just Roxy

TomatoSandwiches · 11/03/2026 18:17

She hasn't asked for your opinion so don't give it.

This.

She likes them enough to have it written on their clothing. Why would you purposely upset her by putting them down?

This exact same thread has been posted before, with the exact same names and everyone said showgirl names.

I think that was Gigi and Lola, unless there was another one that I missed. I also think it was the babies mum who posted that.

oh… this would indicate the OP is a bit sketchy then. Poor daughter

sonjadog · 11/03/2026 18:28

There is nothing wrong with those names except that you have a particular perception of them and don't like them. Neither of those things are enough for you to need to get involved with their naming. You will get used to the names and stop thinking about them in any other way that that they are your nieces.

ginasevern · 11/03/2026 18:27

Yes, I see what you mean OP. Lola on its own isn't too bad but Roxy is awful and the two together.... However, you must bite your tongue or face eternal wrath.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 11/03/2026 18:26

Blogswife · 11/03/2026 18:25

Bite your tongue. If she’s personalising items then she’s already decided on the names without feeling the need to invite opinions from others . If you say anything you’ll no doubt upset her and I’m sure that’s not what you want .
Ive always found that when a baby’s name was not to my taste , the child has grown into it and subsequently it seems that they couldn’t have been called anything else . Those names are really quite pretty , I’m sure you’ll grow to love them.
