Should I mention my concern about this twin name pairing?

Hey,

Looking for a little bit of advice, my DD is expecting twin girls, she has incidentally revealed their chosen names to me, and I’m a little worried that while individually the names are lovely, together they sound a bit “showgirl” or similar.
The names are Lola and Roxy. She lives in France but I can’t imagine the connotations are much better there. She didn’t tell me directly but she was on FaceTime showing me some things they’ve bought and there were a few personalised pieces with these names.

Should I mention it or just bite my tongue?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Yes we are but I don’t want to upset or offend her if they are set on the names.

If your DD and partner have bought personalised items,I think it's fair to assume that they are set on the names.....

FruAashild · 12/03/2026 06:17

Otherwise I wouldn’t care if some elderly person associated a name with something they deem as less than.

I don't think anyone aspires for their daughter to be a prostitute though do you?

Dobequiet · 12/03/2026 06:16

bite your tongue.

The other thread was Lola and Gigi. Both lovely names as is Roxy.

RuthW · 12/03/2026 06:12

I think you should mention it. Tell her both names are lovely, but together they make you think of showgirls. She probably doesn’t realise.

sellingrocks · 12/03/2026 06:12

Trust me - as a mum of twins myself - they aren’t that bad! - I’ve heard some absolutely awful twin names over the years

BelleEpoque27 · 12/03/2026 06:12

Lola seems to be a very common name nowadays, I wouldn't question it at all. And I know a 40-ish year old Roxy.

Times change. Babies born today are not going to know Barry Manilow, the Police or the Kinks.

pilates · 12/03/2026 06:09

Bite your tongue- hard though with names like that.

Silverbirchleaf · 12/03/2026 06:08

Don’t say anything.

Tacohill · 12/03/2026 06:05

I think some posters either need to keep up with the times or keep quiet.

It’s a bit like questioning why a mother is returning to work instead of spending the next 18 years being a housewife and serving her husband and kids.

It’s just not relevant of today’s society.
And even if you have those views, just keep them to yourself.

The only time I would ever give my opinion would be if someone is trying to call their kid chlamydia or something and there’s a chance the child would be bullied for it.

Otherwise I wouldn’t care if some elderly person associated a name with something they deem as less than.

FruAashild · 12/03/2026 06:04

That's an unfortunate combination in English speaking countries although both Roxanne and Dolores are perfectly acceptable names individually. And obviously you can't say anything.

Copacobana by Barry Manilow
Lola by the Kinks
Lolita by Nabokov

There are other uses of the diminutives of Dolores in literature and song to imply exoticism and sexuality, probably inspired by US racism against South Americans of course.

Roxanne by the Police is the only obvious negative association I can think of for that name and of course the name was inspired by the most famous Roxanne in French literature from Cyrano de Bergerac. So in France the name is probably perfectly fine.

Speaking as someone whose name is used in a song, I would strongly advise against Lola due to the risk of "... I know what I am, and I bet I'm a man, and so is Lola..." being used to bully her at some point. It's tedious enough when the lyrics are positive and people decide to sing it at you, as if no-one's ever thought to do that before 🙄 , but I wouldn't risk that one.

Oh come on! I love that song but it is more than 50 years old, as am I. The younger generation probably have never even heard of it. I know a Lola, she is South American and it is apparently a common enough name there.

I quite like the names and I am a right snob 😂

however does your DD know that “ lolos” is slang for boobs in French?

You are surely well aware that the pronunciation isn’t at all like Lola.

Tell her Roxy is a dog's name these days and suggest some other names to go with Lola.

I know 2 dogs named Lola 🤣

2026Y · 12/03/2026 05:54

Rainallnight · 11/03/2026 18:30

If she’s in France, doesn’t she have to pick a name off some sort of approved list?

Or maybe there’s a body that checks the chosen names are French enough? 😂

SerenityScout · 12/03/2026 05:50

Bite it.

Wallywobbles · 12/03/2026 05:47

Lola is very very common in France. Roxy is less so. No one here would think showgirl.

BlatchFord · 12/03/2026 05:44

Dog names more than strippers, these days

Namesy · 12/03/2026 05:43

Roxy is fine but the meaning of the name Lola isn’t great.

I know 3 dogs call David - does that mean no one is allowed to call their kid David anymore?

Roxy/Roxanne is a lovely name.

I have never met one dog called Roxy but even if I did it doesn’t matter because it’s a lovely name which is why people choose it for their loved ones, whether that is a baby or pet.

You’re being ridiculous.

gerispringer · 12/03/2026 05:31

As a Grandparent my motto is “ never give advice unless its asked for”’.

Pipsquiggle · 12/03/2026 05:30

Don't say anything.
The names are normal and fine nowadays.
You will come to love them.

I thought the names were going to be much worse. I know twins where their names rhyme and together they sound ridiculous e.g. Mandy and Andy

Tacohill · 12/03/2026 05:28

I really like the names.

I wouldn’t say anything as it sounds like it’s perhaps more of a generational thing.
I wouldn’t see these names as anything but nice and as they grow up the older generations that may have a negative connotation with these names, won’t be around as much.

The good/new teachers don’t judge kids by the names that their parents gave them.
And any other professional eg new employer, wouldn’t know they have any siblings and wouldn’t care what their names are.

They certainly wouldn’t be bullied for the names and so I’m not sure what your ‘concern’ is.

Justapausereally · 11/03/2026 18:25

Well don’t

respect your daughter and SIL as adults with full capacity

This! Honestly it is nothing to do with you and as this poster says they are adults and quite capable of choosing names for their children. I can't believe you even have to ask this question.

Tamtim · 12/03/2026 04:54

Say nothing. Her kids, not yours. She won’t appreciate your input.
