Should I mention my concern about this twin name pairing?

Hey,

Looking for a little bit of advice, my DD is expecting twin girls, she has incidentally revealed their chosen names to me, and I’m a little worried that while individually the names are lovely, together they sound a bit “showgirl” or similar.
The names are Lola and Roxy. She lives in France but I can’t imagine the connotations are much better there. She didn’t tell me directly but she was on FaceTime showing me some things they’ve bought and there were a few personalised pieces with these names.

Should I mention it or just bite my tongue?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Lola is fine in France, I know a few.

The internet tells me there's only ever been 13 girls named Roxy in France, so I doubt it has stripper connotations here - but the brand Roxy is pretty widespread so I'd be more concerned about that.

Yes we are but I don’t want to upset or offend her if they are set on the names.

They literally brought personalised items and kept the names quiet. I'd say she's set.

Showgirl? As in young woman training and working physically hard for long hours using her talents to maintain her income and entertain audiences? What kind of bland world would it be if parents felt they had to tow some invisible line with regard to naming their dearest creations? Names become their owner’s and variety is the spice of life.

Oh but darling, can you simply IMAGINE if one ever wanted to become a barrister or Prime Minister. How would anyone ever elect MP Lola Smith without simply dying inside a little!! She simy must call them Margaret and Theresa instead!

Heavens, I thought it was going to be Fred and Rose or something. Those names are fine and perfectly ordinary.

I assumed Ronnie and Reggie

Bite your tongue. SHe hasn't told you because she doesn't want your disapproval.
The correct response is along the lines of "oh what beautiful names for two beautiful babies"

PhaedraWas · 12/03/2026 09:10

Lola Mitchell and Roxy Mitchell are apparently deceased Eastenders characters.

Lola and Roxy is an online jewellery store.

There are several guinea pigs, daschunds and cockapoos called Lola and Roxy. Lovely names for the animals. Awful for human beings.

GoldenCupsatHarvestTime · 12/03/2026 09:09

Nobody under the age of 40 thinks either of those names are weird or ‘showgirl’. They’re normal names

Strawberry53 · 12/03/2026 09:08

If they have personalised items already they are set on the names. Don’t say anything it will make her feel bad and not be helpful if she’s set on them. She also didn’t ask for your opinion. They are perfectly fine names in 2026 and not that uncommon.

No child is going to bully a child born in 2026 with the lyrics from a kinks song charting in 1970

Three decades before I was born and I knew it and it was sung at me (hairy kid who’s mother never taught to shave) we had girls at my school called Lola and it wasn’t a problem for them.

Teach your daughters to shave.

Speaking as someone whose name is used in a song, I would strongly advise against Lola due to the risk of "... I know what I am, and I bet I'm a man, and so is Lola..." being used to bully her at some point. It's tedious enough when the lyrics are positive and people decide to sing it at you, as if no-one's ever thought to do that before 🙄 , but I wouldn't risk that one.

With all due respect, I would say to you and a previous poster who referenced the Barry Manilow song, that your cultural frame of reference may need some serious updating.
Do you honestly imagine that the OP's grandchildren's peers are likely to tease them with the lyrics to songs released decades before they and even their parents were born? I often see this objection on threads about the name Lola and it never ceases to seem bizarre and out of touch. There are far more contemporary associations with the name Lola which are much more likely to come to mind like the pop star Lola Young.

Whosthetabbynow · 12/03/2026 09:03

I love the names

BrendaThePoodle · 12/03/2026 08:55

They’re gorgeous names. Not everyone wants to give their child a name like Persephone or Margot.
Lola is a really old name, originally short for Dolores. Very popular without being common.
Roxy is cool. Due a revival. It’s got the same vibe as edie, love it.

Names can’t please everyone and thats life, some names that are overwhelmingly popular I can’t imagine giving a child of my own because I don’t like the sound, my kids names have been mentioned on these threads before as chavvy. I’d personally rather my kids names be chavvy but names I adored as opposed to Catherine or Olivia just because they’re neutral enough for MN to not have an opinion.

Don’t ruin DD’s gorgeous name choices just because you’d rather they were named something different. My family and DH’s have always disliked our name choices. They named their kids the most boring crap names. Leave my chavvy names alone 😂

They are absolutely fine. Standard names and not “showgirl” at all. There’s two Lola’s and three Roxy’s in my son’s preschool. I know of a few others, too.

They might not be to your taste, but they’re perfectly fine names.

Yes, I see what you mean OP. Lola on its own isn't too bad but Roxy is awful and the two together.... However, you must bite your tongue or face eternal wrath.

They're both awful on their own.

They are the names a friend of mine named their fussy lapdogs exactly because they sound like a pair of showgirls.

I'd be more concerned that the names sound like a matched pair more than the names themselves. But what are you going to do? My MIL flipped when she heard one of her daughter's child's name. The name did not change. The insuing flight did not help the relationship. Roll your eyes in private and if you really can't stomach it once they are here come up with some great nicknames lol.

usedtobeaylis · 12/03/2026 08:37

There's nothing wrong with the names, they're just not to your personal taste. Which is why you shouldn't say anything.

From one grandmother to another…..

Think of this as a positive, you have time to get used to the idea of the names rather than walking in to meet them after they are born to be told their names and your facial expression is WTAF as mine was when my grandchild was born.

My grandchild is now 5, I love my grandchild to bits but if I’m honest still not a fan of the name.

Thesnailonthewhale · 12/03/2026 08:32

I'd keep out. They're fine names.

Besides they'll end up being called Lolly and Rocks or something anyway.

Tell her Roxy is a dog's name these days and suggest some other names to go with Lola.

I've never met a dog called Roxy but know more than one human one (grown-ups not kids).

sellingrocks · 12/03/2026 08:22

Or play that song “Lola she was a showgirl” all the time in her presence or sing it ….my parents did something similar with my eldests original choice of name had they been the opposite sex and it soon put me off 🤣
