Should I mention my concern about this twin name pairing?

Hey,

Looking for a little bit of advice, my DD is expecting twin girls, she has incidentally revealed their chosen names to me, and I’m a little worried that while individually the names are lovely, together they sound a bit “showgirl” or similar.
The names are Lola and Roxy. She lives in France but I can’t imagine the connotations are much better there. She didn’t tell me directly but she was on FaceTime showing me some things they’ve bought and there were a few personalised pieces with these names.

Should I mention it or just bite my tongue?

Maybe it's a dialect difference? Where I grew up, I only heard Tommy, Sammy etc referred to as "nicknames". I only learned the word "diminutive" as an adult.

@Zennia , It's not dialect, they have different meanings.
Children tend to have a smaller vocabulary.

A nickname is something like Thomas known as Spike, a diminutive is something like Tom or Tommy being used for Thomas.

They're diminutives...!

Sally is a nickname for Sarah
Tommy is a nickname for Thomas
Johnny is a nickname for John.

Nicknames are not always shorter than the original name.

I've never heard that before. Why would you 'shorten' a 2-syllable name to a 2-syllable one?

Lola is a common nickname for Lauren and is the name of a friend of mine, it's not 'showgirl' at all, she's a perfectly normal person and nobody questions her name. Nobody will question theirs either.

Are they cockapoos?

In my Facebook Border Terrier group there are at least 7 Lolas and 7 Roxys.

user1492757084 · 12/03/2026 17:44

They are fine.
They remind me of the musical, Grease and dancing.
Beautiful energetic and artistic names.

I love Dolores (Lola) and Roxanne. Roxanne is French in origin. Dolores Spanish, I prefer full names on BC then NN, but they are your DD's and her DP to name. I agree that they are no longer showgirl names and outside of England. they wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 12/03/2026 10:57

As a very new granny my advice is to never criticise and always support. If they want your opinion they'll ask for it.

Tell her Roxy is a dog's name these days and suggest some other names to go with Lola.

Ive got a cat called Lola, and someone i know has a dog called Lola!

Sassylovesbooks · 12/03/2026 10:37

Lola is a pretty name...depending on your age Lola is a song by The Kinks about a transvestite. Roxy is generally short for Roxanne or Roxanna but is used in it's own right too. I prefer Lola to Roxy but I like Roxanne, although it would be shortened to Roxy.

You need to bite your tongue. It may not be your choice, but it's ultimately your daughter's. I work in a school, and I've heard much worse names!!

HoppingPavlova · 12/03/2026 10:11

Bite your tongue. Nothing good will come of your opinion.

topcat2014 · 12/03/2026 10:08

Charlie and Lola surely?

Just no. It’s not her business.

fatphalange · 12/03/2026 10:05

No one thinks like that, OP. It’s a you thing not an everybody else thing so there’s no reason to give your DD a head’s up.
Both names are mainstream in France. I had several Lolas in my year and that was ages ago.

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 12/03/2026 10:04

Surprised by all the people who like Lola but dislike Roxy or think it’s just for dogs — I know four little Roxys under 5! It’s hugely trendy at the moment. (All in London, perhaps relevant.)

Personally I think they are perfect standard names, go really well together and would gently suggest that OP’s views are a little old fashioned.

My own mum probably hated all my kids’ names at first and now thinks they’re perfect. Bite your tongue.

365RubyRed · 12/03/2026 10:00

Lovely names. Congratulations on twin granddaughters!

Newusernameforthiss · 12/03/2026 09:48

Read "wise children" by Angela Carter, the ultimate story of showgirl twins.

Roxane is from Cyrano de Bergerac so classier in French! Bonne chance with it all.

My husband wouldn't let me call our twins Champagne and Supernova, they've got nice normal classic names instead 😜

MsGreying · 12/03/2026 09:47

Just play her some Barry Manilow and the Police.

FunMustard · 12/03/2026 09:34

You're being a ridiculous snob.

Showgirl? As in young woman training and working physically hard for long hours using her talents to maintain her income and entertain audiences? What kind of bland world would it be if parents felt they had to tow some invisible line with regard to naming their dearest creations? Names become their owner’s and variety is the spice of life.

Very well said! I have no idea why people are giving 'showgirl' a negative connotation.
Though I say that as a devoted Swiftie and she is currently in her showgirl era, and if it's good enough for my queen it's good enough for anyone surely! Also, mainly thanks to 'Life of a Showgirl', Kitty is the only name I really think of when I hear 'showgirl'!
Our daughter is named for a song, a Taylor one of course, I liked the idea of her having a name song and don't see it as a big no-no, like a previous poster suggested. However, our daughter's name is not particularly unusual and nobody but a die-hard Swiftie like myself and my husband is likely to jump to her namesake song when hearing the name!
