Why is there so much dislike for the middle name rose on here?

I called my daughter Ava Rose I think it’s very short and pretty and I chose rose for no particular reason other than I liked how it looked and sounded, which seems to be heavily looked down upon on here to choose rose just because it’s pretty and without family meaning but I don’t really understand why it matters. Rose is a filler i admit but it’s beautiful that’s why imo. Many on here always insist on giving a really clunky old fashioned middle name like Catherine, Elizabeth, Margaret etc after a family member or something but not everyone needs or wants to pick such names just for the sake of a family member and to potentially make the first name look uglier.

im clearly biased because of my own child’s name but seriously don’t understand why there’s seems to be a problem with wanting a pretty middle name instead of something super significant.

I love the name Rose. It's pretty and feminine. I think it's a snobby thing to dislike it.

Ava Rose is a pretty name.

I think some of the ones you've said are clunky can be pretty too with a short, soft first name. Something like Sophie Elizabeth or Ivy Catherine.

If I'd had girls I'd have wanted Marianne or Rosalind as middle names with softer, shorter first names. Neither of those are family names, I just like them.

I didn't realise 'k' names or hyphens were so unpopular before coming on mumsnet.

Because a lot of people on here are very blunt. And not very kind. I would advise people not to ask people their opinions of names, unless they have a thick skin.

To me, a "filler name" would be a middle name you choose without much care because you think every child ought to have one, or if you choose one purely to create a gap between the first name and surname (e.g. you don't like the way the 'A' sounds in "Emma Allen" run together, so you stick another name in between).

But if you love the name Rose (or May or Grace) then I don't think they count as filler names. They're just very popular.

both my dc middle names have been family names for generations.

HugoThatway · 06/03/2026 17:55

It's because it's so overused as a middle name. Any other girl will be Ava Rose, Ava May or Ava Grace or whatever the first name is.

People are weird about middle names.

no one ever knows middle names after birth announcements. So people should go with whatever they fancy and if others don’t like it - it really doesn’t matter.

rose is nice btw

modgepodge · 06/03/2026 17:44

I think it’s like May/Mae and Grace, just really common as a middle name. (My daughter has one of these names so no judgement! It’s short and goes with her longer first name really nicely IMO.)

i don’t think Rose gets a particular amount of hate on here anyway? I can’t imagine having hate for any middle name really, they’re so inconsequential!

Hopefulsalmon · 06/03/2026 17:43

It's a popular middle name (like Louise and May/Mae) but nontheless it's a lovely, pretty name. I think it goes well with Ava.

MissingSockDetective · 06/03/2026 17:40

I like it.

Givemeausernamepls · 06/03/2026 17:38

I have a something Rose, she is 14, its defo become the Louise of her time...

user2848502016 · 06/03/2026 17:36

I think it’s pretty as a first or middle name

GoldenRosebee · 06/03/2026 17:27

I wouldn't personally use filler name, I don't think filler names compliments every name equally. For example Marina Rose is very pretty to me, but I don't like Ava Rose. I know people are named this, but ultimately I just don't fancy shorter name and don't like name Ava. That's my personally opinion, your kid would probably like her name.

I also wouldn't chose to honor a relative over name I truly liked, but then I don't think dusty old names are necessary ugly.

FancyCatSlave · 06/03/2026 17:05

There’s no dislike for it, it was just very overused, the Louise of its time. It’s perfectly nice, just there’s a lot of them.

I used family names because it connects DD to her family (of which she has very little).

IHate · 06/03/2026 17:05

It’s because people think it’s either dated or common. Which isn’t an answer you’ll like, but you did ask. It’s not particularly pretty, just a bit…meh?

And, personally, I think ‘filler’ names are a bit of a sad concept.

HootyMcB00b · 06/03/2026 17:04

Is there dislike for it? Maybe it's just because it's used a lot and every fourth girl is called Something Rose?
