Why is there so much dislike for the middle name rose on here?

I called my daughter Ava Rose I think it’s very short and pretty and I chose rose for no particular reason other than I liked how it looked and sounded, which seems to be heavily looked down upon on here to choose rose just because it’s pretty and without family meaning but I don’t really understand why it matters. Rose is a filler i admit but it’s beautiful that’s why imo. Many on here always insist on giving a really clunky old fashioned middle name like Catherine, Elizabeth, Margaret etc after a family member or something but not everyone needs or wants to pick such names just for the sake of a family member and to potentially make the first name look uglier.

im clearly biased because of my own child’s name but seriously don’t understand why there’s seems to be a problem with wanting a pretty middle name instead of something super significant.

It’s just massively overused. Every other girl within a certain age range is Ava/Eva/Evie/Lily/Mia middle name Rose/Mae/May/Grace.

IggyAce · 06/03/2026 21:30

It’s a beautiful name and you love it and that’s all that matters.
Personally Rose, May and Grace are the new filler middle names like Louise, Jane and Anne were for my generation. Since I have a filler middle name and feel it’s safe and boring my dcs middle name is one that we could have chosen as their first name.

FunMustard · 06/03/2026 21:26

@HugoThatway ok? Confused Wasn't explicitly talking about you, you know.

PutTheScrewInTheTuna · 06/03/2026 21:21

Well it’s pretty but it’s so heavily used.
It seems every other girl has the middle name Rose or May at the moment. Names by definition are supposed to be identifiers so why would you want to pick the same as everybody else else. It just makes it blah.

TheNameWasOnceChosen · 06/03/2026 21:19

My name is Something Rose and I love it. I was named after my Granny Rose so it reminds her of her.

My middle name is Louise - my mum still refuses to accept that everyone my age is called it and thinks she made an original choice despite the fact that of my group of 6 school friends 5 had the middle name Louise and the sixth only wasn't called it as she didn't have a middle name 😂

I’m another middle name Louise!

It’s just so pointless. You don’t need a middle name, either don’t bother or go for something bonkers. Danger or Thor or something.

Headingforholidays · 06/03/2026 21:13

CreepyCoupe · 06/03/2026 21:11

I don’t I think it’s disliked particularly on here. It’s a perfectly safe and somewhat dull middle name. May or Mae as middle names are hated on here.

Middle names are completely meaningless anyway.

MrsKateColumbo · 06/03/2026 21:09

It's a beautiful first name. As a middle name it is the Louise/Marie if this generation but it's not a big deal. My kids have surnames as middle names from my family's heritage (so like Patel or O'Neill) which i love as it carries on our family name.

Whatnameisif · 06/03/2026 21:06

For me personally it's because it's so common at the moment as a middle name. So it doesn't feel interesting to hear of another child with the middle name Rose, Grace or May. In itself they are lovely.

I feel the same about Eve/Evie/Evelyn, Lily and Teddy as a first name, I seem to know millions! But there's nothing wrong with the names.

I think all one syllable names are a bit at risk of being overused as a middle name because they often flow well with lots of things. See also Ann and Jane.

Dellmouse · 06/03/2026 21:04

I’m a 90s baby with the middle name Louise and my sisters middle name is Marie. They were the biggest filler names on the 90s, we don’t use them and they seem a bit pointless 😂. This was a big deciding factor in choosing a family name for my children (my mums name and my dads name, as my children have my husbands surname).
I wouldn’t have bothered with a middle name unless it had some meaning to me.

belle89yg · 06/03/2026 21:00

It’s the Louise of the 90s. I don’t think it’s disliked just doesn’t provoke much interest. I think it’s disliked when it’s hyphenated as a first name eg Ava-Rose.

HugoThatway · 06/03/2026 20:55

I don't like Ophelia and Otto.

OSTMusTisNT · 06/03/2026 20:54

I don't like it because of Rose West.

FunMustard · 06/03/2026 20:53

I like it, but most people on this particular board are absolutely raging snobs about baby names, and only like names like Ophelia and Otto and all the yummy mummy uber-middle class names.

Not saying I don't like those names, I do, but I also like Rose <shrug>

80smonster · 06/03/2026 20:49

I used Rose as a middle name, because it was my grandmother’s name - whom I adored. What others think of it doesn’t bother me in the slightest and only those closest would know the significance. Names I find common others seem to like. An MN classic was the expectant mum to be who was naming her children after estate agents: Carter, Harrison and something else American that I can’t recall.

Rhubarb24 · 06/03/2026 20:45

I have an 18 year old and a 15 year old and pretty much half of girls in their classes through out the years are called Something-Rose, Something-Grace or Something-Mae. It's just bit done.

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 06/03/2026 20:43

My middle name is Jane, which was incredibly common in the 80s. I considered using it for my DC, as it must be rare now. But I thought they deserved their own names.

HugoThatway · 06/03/2026 20:38

bruffin · 06/03/2026 20:15

But my dds middle name has always been fashionable as a middle name It was my Nans middle name back in 1912, and my DMs back in 1937 and DDs in 1997. You dont seem to have the imagination to underwhy people chose names other than to be fashionable

Edited

I'm guessing the name is Rose or May.
Those were very old-fashioned (not in a good way) when I was born.
They would have been very unusual as a middle name or a first name.

If you go to Baby names since 1904: how has yours performed? - Office for National Statistics, you will see that it has not always been popular

Bluedenimdoglover · 06/03/2026 20:38

Don't overthink this. It's a popular name at the moment. It's lovely. When I was born the popular middle monniker was "Mary" - because most families had a granny or favourite aunt with that name. Not a particularly pretty name, but I can't say it's done me any harm.

ToadRage · 06/03/2026 20:28

Rose is incredibly common as a middle name atm and I think that maybe why some people look down on it. There must be one in every generation, people my age are overrun with the middle name Louise. There is nothing wrong with wanting a pretty name. My middle name is Amelia and I love it, I think its one if prettiest names. I am fond of all my names (except my maiden name which i hated). Don't let anyone on here tell you what name you can and can't have. By all means ask opinions but don't take it to heart if someone thinks they can object your choice.

Newbie8918 · 06/03/2026 20:27

My grandmas name was Rose. Every granddaughters middle name is Rose. Jessica rose, Lindsay rose, Catherine Rose etc. There are 12 of us. I think it’s beautiful. I don’t care if people think it’s dated! Lots of interesting opinions on here that I take with a pinch of salt.

Caselgarcia · 06/03/2026 20:20

Remember it's a surname too!

Not a very common surname. Not even in the top 70 in the UK. And unless the OP's surname is Rose, then her daughter having the middle name Rose is fine.

Nobody owes you an unusual or interesting name.

??

Zov · 06/03/2026 20:23

@Bluewales

I didn't know Rose was an unpopular middle name. (On here.) I know Mae is. (Especially spelt like 'Mae.')

Ava Rose is gorgeous. 😍
