Why is there so much dislike for the middle name rose on here?

I called my daughter Ava Rose I think it’s very short and pretty and I chose rose for no particular reason other than I liked how it looked and sounded, which seems to be heavily looked down upon on here to choose rose just because it’s pretty and without family meaning but I don’t really understand why it matters. Rose is a filler i admit but it’s beautiful that’s why imo. Many on here always insist on giving a really clunky old fashioned middle name like Catherine, Elizabeth, Margaret etc after a family member or something but not everyone needs or wants to pick such names just for the sake of a family member and to potentially make the first name look uglier.

im clearly biased because of my own child’s name but seriously don’t understand why there’s seems to be a problem with wanting a pretty middle name instead of something super significant.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

It's the Donna/Karen/Sharon/Tracy of today.

But as with most names they tend to go in and out of fashion.

Nothing wrong with Rose, it's quite nice.

RosesAndHellebores · 06/03/2026 22:37

I like Rose. It's classic and pretty. My great, great grandmother was called.Rose. Had ds been a girl, (1994) Madaleine Rose was on the lost.

My middle name, v v unusual 65 years ago became v v popular about 10 years ago. I may tell you what it is if you ask nicely :).

nowayho · 06/03/2026 22:35

I think because it’s really popular, however I absolutely love it. I feel like it goes with everything. I wanted to have this as my Daughters middle name but didn’t in the end due to its popularity.

Nobody owes you an unusual or interesting name.

Nobody owes originality either, apparently.

WonkyMirror · 06/03/2026 22:33

My dds middle name is May. Both of my DH’s grandmas were May and it was a nod to them, you’d think I’d created the biggest chav ever according to Mumsnet. Do I care? Not in the slightest!

It’s okay, if a bit bland.
I wouldn't choose it, or other flowery names because to me it sounds bright, cheerful, light and summer like and thats a lot of pressure, what if they want to be a goth?! Or have a naturally standoffish manner.
I met a charming young girl called Willow recently, thats a lot of pressure to be slim! And Grace needs to be calm and have impeccable manners…it’s just tempting fate to have a name with an obvious meaning I think.

Poor old Chastity...

Giraffehaver · 06/03/2026 22:31

Rose is a family name for my husband’s side just as Ann is a family name on mine so if I chose to use them would I be judged?!

Yes but so does Louise and when every baby girl is an Amy Louise, Emma Louise, Ella Louise, Laura Louise, Katie Louise, Chloe Louise,... you start thinking 'not another one'.

Some people do.

I used Rose knowing it is a popular middle name and I still love it just as much. Popularity just doesn't bother some people as much as it does others.

thinkofsomethingdifferent · 06/03/2026 22:29

I have a 2012 born DD with a middle name Rose. No particular reason for it, I just liked it. I did originally plan to use it as her first name but she just didn’t look like a Rose…if that make sense. Older daughter was going to be an Amber but I changed at last minute to Ruby and she went on to have 14 Ruby’s in her year at secondary school. Ironically, I’m an 80s baby with the middle name Louise so clearly I just follow trends Confused

HugoThatway · 06/03/2026 22:26

@Bigears6789 , a filler name is a middle name for the sake of one.
Like if DC1 has 1 then DC2 gets 1 etc.

@Mumofgirls2017 , the others other than Skye aren't much used as middle names, are they?

Mumofgirls2017 · 06/03/2026 22:20

My middle name is Rose- I’m an 80s baby- I’ve always loved my middle name and was unusual at the time but I think it gets a bad rep on here due to it seeming unimaginative and bland now it’s so popular as a middle- however I think it remains a pretty, classic name and won’t date as other middle names eg willow, Skye, summer, Luna

Bigears6789 · 06/03/2026 22:16

I have a something Rose, named after grandmother and until now had no idea of Rose’s popularity or being a ‘filler’ name! Never even heard of a ‘filler’ name!
Choose the name you love and not because of other people or popularity. I love DD’s name

BasilandTom · 06/03/2026 22:14

My sister is Ava Rose. It’s a beautiful name and she loves it. However, she’s in her 40s. Back when we were little both names weren’t that common. Both family names of grandparents. Now my sister’s mind is boggled at how many little girls she hears about called Ava-[name].

Ava-[something] and Rose really are the Louise/Hayley of today. But, if you’re alright with your daughter having a very popular name then who cares? I think it’s beautiful, but I am bias 😊

It's a popular middle name for good reason. - fashion

Ohyeahitsme · 06/03/2026 22:04

It's because it's common (as in used frequently, not low class) and unimaginative. I actually like the name Rose but it's definitely over used. The Elizabeth/ Louise/ May of the time.

GreenEyesIsBack · 06/03/2026 22:03

It's so overused it's barely a name now, it's just a noise tacked onto the first name.

Usernamenotav · 06/03/2026 22:01

It's just that's it's overused i think. I don't care what people call their kids. But I do know three kids named Ava Rose and one Isla Rose.

Dunno but this doesn't make you sound great tbh, quite bitchy and immature

springyla · 06/03/2026 21:47

Step away from social media media and you’ll find most actual people in your life won’t even know your child’s middle name, much less have an opinion on it. I couldn’t tell you the middle names of any of my friend’s kids. If you like the name nothing else matters, don’t give it any more headspace.

rainforestalliance · 06/03/2026 21:46

I’m an early 90s baby and went to school with loads of Emma Louise/Sophie Louise/Rebecca Anne type names. I feel like the modern day equivalent are names like Amelia Rose/Isla Mae/Ava Grace etc.

That said, names are generally popular because they are nice!

MaidOfSteel · 06/03/2026 21:40

I love the name Rose and would use it as a first name.

But can’t you see you’re being equally as judgey when you say other names are clunky etc.

SouthLondonMum22 · 06/03/2026 21:39

One of my DD's is Felicity Rose. It's a popular middle name for good reason.

Daisyblue2 · 06/03/2026 21:37

What on earth is a ‘filler’ name. People are so pretentious insulting names people choose for their children. Rose is a pretty name. One of my girls has it as a middle name and one of my granddaughters.my other girls have ‘filler🤣) names as well Marie, gayle , louise. Oh and my
filler name is jane. Honestly what a load of nonsense
