Why is there so much dislike for the middle name rose on here?

My DGD has the middle name Rose and it goes beautifully with her first name. I think people should call their kids whatever they like, whether it's a filler name, 'clunky' name, family name or whatever. Live and let live and never mind what other people think!

Ha well I have a Mae (first name) which is apparently the most filler ish name in the world. I don’t care. She was due in May, I particularly like Mae blossom, (the old English spelling of it), I once looked after a lovely old lady called May, and I like the silent film actress Mae West. I couldn’t car less what people thing of it really. She doesn’t meet alot of other Mae’s oddly as most people have it as a middle name.

Is it? Willowy means tall, slim. That’s going to be tough if you end up 5”1 and size 18!

I think when names get too common*, they become cliché and people start to dislike them. Rose is the Anne or Louise of the current generation of young women and girls.

(To be clear, I mean "common" as in "popular", not the snooty MN sense of the word.)

Would you not associate the name Willow with willowy (tall, slim, and lithe)?

I think it’s just the middle name if it’s era like the days of Louise or Marie.
i almost gave 18 year old DD the middle name rose but my SIL chose it as a middle name for her dd as did several friends during my pregnancy- so I went with something else
I work in a primary school and we have had a few Ava-Roses and Ava-May as well as Ella-Rose, Lily Rose etc
I dint dislike it, it’s just very common

This is a really weird comment about been slim just because her name is willow 🤣

You can't really moan about people looking down on a name then saying a different choice makes other kids names ugly

Are just a bit common. there was a time where every one and his dog was called Ava rose and they were usually picked by chavs, so that might be why people might look down on them

I couldn't care less what people call their kids as long as I'm not paying for the child it makes no odds to me

I really like Rose! And I say that as someone who has a daughter with a clunky old fashioned middle name who was named for a relative 😂 I think people like to feel original when they are naming their children but pretty much everyone is coming something they’ve heard before, so just choose something you like!

Ahem, some people like are known by their middle names and its the first name that is redundant 😁

I knew my best friend for 20 years before I found out her middle name then have promptly forgotten what it is! They’re so irrelevant.

I love the name. To me it is beautiful and timeless. No association with dusty old relatives.

I don’t understand why some actually care on others opinion on a name. Your child your choice and you choose something you like/love. With all mine I always chose a family names for middle names until I ran out I have 7 children lol and the always have two middle names that’s are hyphened. Because a) I haven’t a middle name and always wished I had one even if in my time it no doubt would have been the common Louise 🙈🤣 b) because I liked the way they sounded. So my youngest does have Rose as a middle name but it’s because my grandpas fav flower was the yellow rose so I clutched at straws as I had ran out of family names to use. So her name is Gabriella Amelia-Rose. I love it and that’s all that matters. Also just to add o was told my kids would had having two middle names growing up my older 5 are all 19 through to 14 and they like their names too xx

Rose is a beautiful name. I love all flower and nature names.

Also in my family I had a wonderful great great aunt called Rose and we have many generations before her of Rosetta’s. So definitely a family name.

For me, it’s nice but when something has been used a billion times, it loses any appeal. It’s almost like a filler name at this point

Parents wanted their surname as a middle name, which I'd have been OK with but it wasn't an unusual name or anything and it didn't flow. I never really liked or disliked it.

I love the name, either as a first or middle name.

People get their knickers in such a twist about middle names. I never had one, and growing up I used to think I was missing something. Well, now I live in a country where the native culture doesn't have middle names, and I watch a lot of immigrants struggle with it! Government forms, bank paperwork etc might not have enough character space for a middle name and then people get in trouble because their account application name doesn't match their passport.

So if you feel like you've picked a middle name because you had to, remember that going without is also an option!

I don't know why people do it but grandmothers seem to be the worst, and O'm never sure if they meant Evie Rose and Ella May or the same with hyphens.

One of my neighbours had grandchildren and she always called them Laura Jane and Helen Anne, so I even still think of them as that.

I wouldn’t use a family name unless I really like it. I hear some really ugly names which make me wince. That’s the parents choice though. I also don’t like 2 middle names, to me it’s unnecessary and nobody at all will ever call someone by their first name plus 2 middle names.
May/Mai/Mae is still a very common middle name. So is James for a boy.

I have one. There is a family reason but really I only gave her a middle name for her future email address 🤣

I don't have one and my married name although not overly common across the UK, is where I live and as our company style is initial dot surname I struggled (particularly as my first name is also short and so had also been taken as initials). It leads to much confusion.

Rose is lovely, its a classic name.

Personally I don't like it when its tacked on to a first name. In your instance your DD will say 'My name is Ava and my middle name is Rose' . I think the dislike is saying 'My name is Ava Rose' meaning this is what they are called every time someone says their name.

It's incredible how so many MNers have grandmothers called Rose, May or Grace.
