My sister in law has just had a baby girl and has called her Hero. I am delighted for her of course but I just can't get my head around her name. What do you think?

My friend's daughter is also called Hero. I love it and it really suits her. Agree MIL is fantastically rude.

kslatts · 18/06/2008 17:26

I wouldn't of thought of using it, but really like it and if I was to have a dd3 (which is unlikely) may even consider using it.

Much Ado About Nothing

minster · 18/06/2008 16:37

It's a fabulous name ... always nice when people give uncommon names to the correct gender (thinking of all the little girls called Paris )

spugs · 18/06/2008 16:26

we have a hero on march 08 postnatal thread, i think its a lovely name

LadySweet · 18/06/2008 16:04

Blonde lady from Cold Feet (Hermione something?) has a daughter called Hero

GreenGodess · 18/06/2008 10:08

I love it is one of my wisH I had the guts names! People will soon get used to it.

AbbeyA · 18/06/2008 08:20

I assumed from the title that it was a boy.
I would have been inclined to have a pretty name like Harriet and then shorten to Hero (then she has the option of changing if she hates Hero!)You can tell from this comment that I hate it!

cyteen · 17/06/2008 18:05

Haha seeker, you too? Hero is quite nice, although not one I'd choose myself - but Hero AND Tybalt is just too much. IMO.

Miyazaki · 17/06/2008 16:18

and princessglitter completely agree. That hero was a bit drippy and it put me off somewhat...

Miyazaki · 17/06/2008 16:17

I bloody love it. Came quite close to calling dd2 this.

nooka · 17/06/2008 16:03

I think it's a bit silly TBH. But I hope she grows into it and it suits her. MIL was fantastically rude!

hannah001 · 17/06/2008 15:55

I associate it with boys now too (probably Hiro's fault in Heroes).

TwoFirTreesToday · 17/06/2008 15:44

I like it, bit Sci-Fi and bit Shakespear

Nancy66 · 17/06/2008 11:48

I should like it because I really like old, classical name....but for some reason I don't.

Heifer · 17/06/2008 11:45

Enid, you may like the name Devizes, but have you ever been there? It would put you right off...

seeker · 17/06/2008 11:07

Somebody in the Saturday Guardian had a Hero and a Tybalt. Serously-poncy-trying-too-hard in my opinion!

CoteDAzur · 17/06/2008 11:01

I will be the sole voice of opposition, I guess.

It may have been a beautiful girl's name in the past, but it means, well, hero now.

Enid · 17/06/2008 11:01

but prefer Devizes

Enid · 17/06/2008 11:00

i know a very cool little girl called hero

princessglitter · 17/06/2008 10:59

I would say definitely a girl's name. Purely because of the Shakespeare association. I don't like it for a boy.

isn't it a boy's name?

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 17/06/2008 10:55

Did you see the Guardian last Saturday? On the back page of the Family section, someone was writing about going potholing with their children Hero and Tybalt.

Fantastic Shakespearean names, in my opinion (my daughter has one too so I am clearly biased). Yes, they are extremely unusual but where's the harm in that?

princessglitter · 17/06/2008 10:46

Beautiful. Reminds me of Much Ado about Nothing, although for a role model, I much prefer her fiesty cousin Beatrice. Hero was a bit drippy.
