Julian Flores sounds good

Krakinou · 02/03/2026 12:29

Cielo - I think the pronunciation would be quite difficult for UK relatives. I really don’t think it’d work in my accent. Could you ask a couple of friends to try pronouncing the names on your list and see if you’re ok with them.
Have you got a nickname in mind?

If you’re using Flores as the surname, why not “Sky” as a first name to reflect the cultural mix and stop it sounding too much like a perfume brand. And it sounds a lot like Kai (though if you really like Kai just ignore your grandma).

I love Angel, but if you’re in the UK you’ll need to be ok with it being pronounced as the English word. Colleagues, friends etc will be able to cope with the Spanish pronunciation but strangers are almost always going to get it wrong. I quite like it with the English pronunciation too though.

Other ideas… there’s a Rodrigo in my DDs class who everyone calls Guigo which I think is really cute.

These replies are very harsh. Society and schools nowadays are far more multicultural than in the past and I think most kids wouldn't bat an eyelid at the name Cielo. If it's a name from your culture and you don't mind the possible pronunciation issues, I think it's fine.

It's sielo and chielo not sello and cello

In Italian it’s Chaylow with the emphasis on the first syllable.

HootyMcB00b · 01/03/2026 14:49

No, don't use it. It does mean "sky" in Spanish but it's also used as a term if endearment. Equivalent of naming your child "darling"...

AmandaBrotzman · 01/03/2026 14:12

CassandraCan · 01/03/2026 12:47

It’s not like that at all. Means sky and pronounced Sello in Spanish and Cello (like the instrument) in Italian.

It's sielo and chielo not sello and cello

Diamond7272 · 01/03/2026 13:57

"here's a tube of cielo, and some caneston combi tablets to calm the itch..."

Come back in a week...

Cielo, as other posters have said, is either a rubbish car from the 90s or a pessary... It's not good for a human name

ThatThisThatYou · 01/03/2026 12:55

Cielo Flores? Literally Sky Flowers? No.

Uvorange · 01/03/2026 12:53

bluecupcakev · 28/02/2026 22:34

It’s pronounced like “See-eh-lo”, it’s a masculine noun that means heaven or sky in Spanish but it’s more commonly used as a girl name. I like how it sounds and the meaning of it but I’m worried it’s literally a word and the last name would be Flores which is another literal word more than a name . I don’t know if I’m explaining myself 😅

The same word is pronounced more like Che low in Italian so anyone who doesn’t realise it’s Spanish rather than Italian will pronounce it wrong, as will most English speakers if they don’t know any Spanish, probably

I don’t hate it but I think it’ll be annoying for him.
I think Kai and Cairo are awful, I’m not a fan of angel, I think Julian is a bit wet personally but I wouldn’t judge it. I’d assume French not Spanish with Claude though I do like it and Casper is quite popular now.

Is there a reason you’re not going with the more ‘classic’ Spanish names like Alejandro, mateo, Lucas, Carlos or cesar, that would all work easily in the uk if that’s the main aim?

if you’re not bothered about it being Spanish some similar vibe names to cielo might be enzo, Leo, Elias, rafe, Jovan

CassandraCan · 01/03/2026 12:51

Calliopespa · 01/03/2026 00:28

I like Claude and Julian.

Angel would be teased in UK, I'm sorry.

Cairo is a bit try-hard and Kai is just not a great vibe.

We knew a 14-year old Angel and he wasn’t teased at all. Kids are accepting of different names and adults should be too. If kids are going to tease then they’ll find any way to do it.

Like Coeliac disease?

It’s not like that at all. Means sky and pronounced Sello in Spanish and Cello (like the instrument) in Italian.

I think it’s cool. So what if he has to help a few English speakers pronounce it? It’s not hard to say once you know it. I vote Cielo!!

It’s not just the English speakers, it’s the Italian speakers!

Although admittedly there are unlikely to be too many.

I had a car 20 odd years ago that was a Daewoo Cielo. Some cars are worth naming your children after, this one was not.

Yes, in my family we have little Kia, Caddy, Shogun and 207. (Thankfully they are cars, not children.)

My other options were Kai, Casper, Claude, Cairo, Ángel and Julian.

Me and my partner like Kai the most because it’s easy to pronounce in English and Spanish. However my Spanish speaking grandma was being mean about it saying “Kai” wasn’t a “real” or “full” name or that he’ll need another one.

Kai is better.

ImWearingPantaloons · 01/03/2026 10:10

Makes me think of Sharon Tate unfortunately so it’s a no from me.

AmandaBrotzman · 01/03/2026 08:39

troppibambini6 · 01/03/2026 07:34

No. It’s not pronounced the way you said. It’s Italian for sky.
Any of the others you suggested would be better.

It's also Spanish for sky with an O on the end, which would be pronounced the way OP said.

janietreemore · 01/03/2026 07:33

Not unless you live in a country where people will pronounce it properly. Nice name though.

Tezza1 · 01/03/2026 05:21

Live in Sydney. I taught a brother and sister who had been born in Cuba. Dad was Cuban and mum Australian. The girl was called Paloma which was lovely, but not very unusual, but he was Cielo which I thought was most striking. He used a pronunciation like Se-ello. He was only about seven and I was only at the school another couple of years, but in the time I was there, none of the kids or teachers thought twice about it, or had any problem with it. I very much doubt there would have been a problem at high school, because there were a lot of interesting and unusual names.

isthismylifenow · 01/03/2026 05:16

It's the name of a clothing range and where I live it's also the name of a furniture chain.

So I immediately thought of couches.

Eenameenadeeka · 01/03/2026 05:08

I think people would struggle to pronounce that one. I'd go with Casper or Julian from your list.

Are you raising the child in the uk? If so Cielo and Angel are completely inappropriate as nobody will pronounce them correctly.
Of your others I like Casper, Claude and even Cairo is quite cool.

BoxOfCats · 01/03/2026 03:00

As far as I’m aware I think it’s used as a term of endearment in Spanish for a romantic partner, similar to how in English you might call your other half “honey”.
